While the big bad corporation has often been the offender in many of the world's greatest environmental disasters, in the…
case of the mass poisoning at Camp Lejeune the culprit is a revered institution: the US Marine Corps. For two decades now, revelations have steadily emerged about pervasive contamination, associated clusters of illness and death among the Marine families stationed there, and military stonewalling and failure to act. Mike Magner's chilling investigation creates a suspenseful narrative from the individual stories, scientific evidence, and smoldering sense of betrayal among those whose motto is undying fidelity. He also raises far-reaching and ominous questions about widespread contamination on US military bases worldwide.Moon Banff National Park: Including Banff And Jasper National Parks (Moon Handbooks Ser.)

By Joseph Wheelan. 2014
In the spring of 1864, Robert E. Lee faced a new adversary: Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant. Named commander of…
all Union armies in March, Grant quickly went on the offensive against Lee in Virginia. On May 4, Grant's army struck hard across the Rapidan River into north-central Virginia, with Lee's army contesting every mile. They fought for forty days until, finally, the Union army crossed the James River and began the siege of Petersburg. The campaign cost 90,000 men-the largest loss the war had seen. While Grant lost nearly twice as many men as Lee did, he could replace them. Lee could not and would never again mount another major offensive. Lee's surrender at Appomattox less than a year later was the denouement of the drama begun in those crucial forty days.Moon Montréal & Québec City

survival were long The odds of escaping even longer But one-man had the courage to fight the odds An elite British S A S operative on an assassination mission gone wrong A Jewish New Yorker injured in a Nazi ambush An eighteen-year-old Gary Cooper lookalike from Mobile Alabama These men and hundreds of other soldiers found themselves in the prisoner-of-war camps off the Atlantic coast of occupied France fighting brutal conditions and unsympathetic captors But miraculously local villagers were able to smuggle out a message from the camp one that reached the Allies and sparked a remarkable quest by an unlikely--and truly inspiring--hero Andy Hodges had been excluded from military service due to a lingering shoulder injury from his college-football days Devastated but determined Andy refused to sit at home while his fellow Americans risked their lives so he joined the Red Cross volunteering for the toughest assignments on the most dangerous battlefields In the fall of 1944 Andy was tapped for what sounded like a suicide mission a desperate attempt to aid the Allied POWs in occupied France--alone and unarmed matching his wits against the Nazi war machine Despite the likelihood of failure Andy did far more than deliver much-needed supplies By the end of the year he had negotiated the release of an unprecedented 149 prisoners--leaving no one behind This is the true story of one man s selflessness ingenuity and victory in the face of impossible adversity50 Events You Really Need to Know: History of War
By Robin Cross. 2012
Human history--from the empires of the ancient world to the superpowers of the 21st century--has been inextricably shaped by conflict…
and the weapons that have been used to wage it. The technologies that have produced advanced civilizations have also been harnessed to the grim business of warfare. The trains that carried working people to their first seaside holidays in the 19th century also took millions of young men to war in 1914. Nearly a century later, the computer revolution, which by 2000 had come to dominate almost every aspect of life in advanced societies, had also introduced us to a new fifth dimension of warfare, in which governments jostle brutally in cyberspace. This short history, stretching from the chariot to the Stuxnet virus which disabled Iran's nuclear enrichment programme in 2007, charts some of the most significant weapons, fortifications and tactics that have been developed in the last 2,500 years.Since 1945, the pace of change has been relentless. In the present day, the main battle tank is facing obsolescence as the master of the battlefield, and the introduction of the Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV) threatens the livelihoods of many of the highly trained establishments of the world's leading air forces. In contrast, the many asymmetric conflicts raging around the globe in countries of the Third World attest to the durability of one of the 20th century's most remarkable weapons, the Kalashnikov assault rifle, developed in the later 1940s and still in service worldwide. This is a scintillating introduction to the world's most enduring phenomenon.Emden: My Experiences in S.M.S. Emden

By Asim K. Duttaroy, Sanjay Basak. 2016
This book highlights the impact of nutrients on early placentation processes and their relevance for fetal growth and pregnancy outcome. The…
role of maternal nutrition on fetal growth and development has been evidenced in many epidemiological studies that included infamous Dutch famine, Helsinki Birth cohort and others. Fetal programming hypothesis states that the nutritional and other environmental conditions under which an individual develops from pre-conception to birth has a major impact on the future health of the newborn child. The developmental environment of the fetus is primarily dependent on two major factors that are maternal nutritional state (excess/low/imbalance) and placental function. Placentation is characterized by the extensive remodeling of the maternal uterine vasculature producing low-resistance blood vessels that facilitate the exchange of nutrients and wastes between the mother and the fetus. Cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in human placental blood vessel formation, which are now well established, are discussed.Major Mick Mannock VC was the top-scoring RAF air ace of the…

to study the whole framework of Soviet life-the people their leaders and their institutions In this study he had the help of a large and well-informed staff and in addition he has had the advantage of closer personal contact with Marshal Stalin than any other Westerner There are vivid portraits of the men who run the Soviet Union all the way from the members of the all-powerful Politburo to the director of a small collective farm There are revealing discussions of the efficiency of Soviet industry and agriculture In the course of his duties General Smith met numbers of Russians of all kinds and his pages contain fascinating sketches of them thus building a picture of the life of the ordinary man in a collectivized economy The American Ambassador had his own housekeeping problems like the incident of the supply of fresh eggs which eventually involved ponderous governmental machinery MY THREE YEARS IN MOSCOW is one of the important books of our time distinguished in its character and permanent in historical value casts more light on the Soviet system on Marshal Stalin and on the tortuous twists and turns of Soviet policy than anything published thus far The New York TimesHIS STORY IS HERE but Tom Treanor the young correspondent of the Los Angeles Times is off…

duty to tow the crippled (and abandoned) Greek tanker ‘Antioch’ 500 miles across the North Atlantic from the spot where she had been attacked by a German wolfpack to the safety of a British port. The ‘Antioch’, at 15,000 tons, had been the largest ship in her convoy and her cargo of four million gallons of high-octane petroleum (enough to send 2,000 Wellington bombers to Berlin and back) is of vital importance to Britain’s wartime economy.Initially angered by their rather inglorious assignment, the warship’s officers and crew slowly begin to take pride in their towing assignment as they try and fend off a German U-boat and a succession of Luftwaffe warplanes after the ‘Antioch’ and ‘Hecate’ are spotted by a German reconnaissance airplane....
