By Hew Strachan. 2023
The First World War required the mobilisation of entire societies, regardless of age or gender. The phrase 'home front' was…
itself a product of the war with parts of Britain literally a war front, coming under enemy attack from the sea and increasingly the air. However, the home front also conveyed the war's impact on almost every aspect of British life, economic, social and domestic. In the fullest account to-date, leading historians show how the war blurred the division between what was military and not, and how it made many conscious of their national identities for the first time. They reveal how its impact changed Britain for ever, transforming the monarchy, promoting systematic cabinet government, and prompting state intervention in a country which prided itself on its liberalism and its support for free trade. In many respects we still live with the consequences.Eat, Gay, Love: Longlisted for the Polari First Book Prize

By George H. Bush, Connie Morella, Dava Guerin, Kevin Ferris. 2014
Unbreakable Bonds tells ten touching stories of mothers who spent years aiding the recovery of their children, US soldiers and…
Marines who suffered severe injuries during the War on Terror. The survival of these wounded warriors is a testament not only to the extraordinary efforts of military medical personnel and their own inner fortitude, but also to their mothers. These women put their lives on hold from the moment they get that first call about their injured son or daughter, giving up their homes and careers and leaving behind family and friends. They are ever present, from those agonizing early days in intensive care, through dozens of lifesaving operations and the months and years of both triumphs and setbacks during therapy and rehabilitation. Their commitment, like the wounds their children suffer, is lifelong.Unbreakable Bonds showcases the selfless love and support of the mothers who, like their wounded warriors, have been changed forever, and who have, without hesitation, sacrificed greatly for their country. They also find strength through the exclusive network of caregivers, who are there not only for their sons and daughters, but for each other as well. With forewords from former president George H. W. Bush and former Maryland congresswoman Connie Morella, this book will appeal to US service members and their loved ones--and those without ties to the military will gain appreciation for those who risk so much to serve our country. The Life of Roger Sherman
By Lewis Henry Boutell. 2023
This is a biography of one of the seminal Founding Fathers, Roger Sherman, who played a crucial role in the…
drafting of the Constitution in 1787.“Founding Father Roger Sherman (1721-1793) helped define the new nation in the last part of the 18th century. Born in Massachusetts, Sherman spent his adult life in Connecticut when, after his father’s death, his mother moved his family to New Milford. He and his brother opened a store in town, and Sherman was the surveyor of New Haven County. Admitted to the Bar in 1754, he served in the Connecticut House of Representatives and the General Assembly. He was elected Mayor of New Haven in 1784 (an office he held until his death), and most noteworthy, Sherman signed of all four major documents of the early United States. Sherman died in 1793 of typhoid fever and was buried in the New Haven Green. In 1821, the city relocated his remains to Grove Street Cemetery, also in New Haven.”-CT Dig. Arch.New Orleans As It Was: Episodes of Louisiana Life [Illustrated Edition]
By Henry C. Castellanos. 2013
A criminal lawyer and popular journalist, Henry C. Castellanos lived nearly three-quarters of the nineteenth century in New Orleans. In…
his later years, between 1892 and 1895, he wrote more than 120 articles for the Times-Democrat on the history and mores of his beloved city, and in 1895 he published a selection of those episodes in New Orleans as It Was. This facsimile reproduction of the volume includes a new introduction by historian Judith Kelleher Schafer, which pieces together the little-known life of Castellanos and provides insights about a period when New Orleans was the queen city of the South. Castellanos's collection of vignettes, incidents, anecdotes, personalities, and descriptions focuses on the years 1820 to 1860 and reflects the interests of a city newspaperman. The reader encounters duels, voodoos, executions, and piracy, and meets mayors, generals, slaves, masters, princes, paupers, judges, prisoners, and jailers. Castellanos describes in detail buildings, public parks, suburbs, notable houses, churches, and neighboring plantations as well as the characteristics, customs, dress, food, and amusements of New Orleanians. In capturing what he called New Orleans's "unwritten history," Castellanos brings alive for readers today America's most interesting city at a younger age.-Print ed.Sun Tzu in the West: The Anglo-American Art of War
By Peter Lorge. 2023
It would be hard to overstate the impact of Sun Tzu's The Art of War on military thought. Beyond its…
impact in Asia, the work has been required reading in translation for US military personnel since the Cold War. Sun Tzu has been interpreted as arguing for 'Indirect Strategy' in contrast to 'Direct Strategy,' the latter idea stemming from Ancient Greece. This is a product of twentieth-century Western thinking, specifically that of Liddell Hart, who influenced Samuel B. Griffith's 1963 translation of Sun Tzu. The credibility of Griffith's translation was enhanced by his combat experience in the Pacific during World War II, and his translation of Mao Zedong's On Guerrilla War. This reading of Sun Tzu is, however, very different from Chinese interpretations. Western strategic thinkers have used Sun Tzu as a foil or facilitator for their own thinking, inadvertently engaging the Western military tradition and propagating misleading generalizations about Chinese warfare. The Making of You: A guide to finding your identity and bossing motherhood

By Eliza Potter. 2023
Potter was a freeborn black woman who, as a hairdresser, was in a unique position to hear about, receive confidences…
from, and observe wealthy white women—and she recorded it all in a revelatory book that delighted Cincinnati's gossip columnists at the time. But more important is Potter's portrait of herself as a wage-earning woman, proud of her work, who earned high pay and accumulated quite a bit of money as one of the nation's earliest "beauticians" at a time when most black women worked at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder. Because her work offered insights into the private lives of elite white women, Potter carved out a literary space that featured a black working woman at the center, rather than at the margins, of the era's transformations in gender, race, and class structure.-Print ed.
