Not to be Rude: Intemperate outbursts from one nutty broad!
By Sarina Rowell. 2016
Not to be Rude is a painfully assembled collection of writing by Sarina Rowell from cult humour websites The Scrivener's…
Fancy and Imagined Slights. Here, all in one place, for the first and last time, she goes into bat for the unfairly maligned - thirtysomething, Nicole Kidman, fashion models and being 'childless by choice'; and goes into bat against the unfairly non-maligned - tapas restaurants, second-hand booksellers, live performances and Audrey Hepburn. If you loved the BBC production of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth, you won't love Not to be Rude, and will, furthermore, be demonstrating your own terrible taste. 'Pretty damned funny.' -TONY MARTIN (the comedian, not the cyclist)Grand River (Images of America)
By Norma Lewis, Michael Gutowsky. 2015
At 265 miles, the Grand River is Michigan's longest waterway, and it was once considered one of the Midwest's most…
important. The river starts as a trickle just south of Jackson and gains power as it surges toward Lake Michigan in Grand Haven. Trappers first used the river to trade with the Native American villages along its banks. Later, the lumber industry transported logs via the Grand. The river shaped the towns and cities that grew up along its banks, providing them with transportation and power for manufacturers, including the once-renowned Grand Rapids furniture industry. Fertile farmlands have always played an important role in the history of the Grand River Valley. Today, the river is used primarily for recreation, including boating, fishing, and, in Grand Ledge, rock climbing.Eastern North Carolina Farming
By Frank Stephenson, Barbara Nichols Mulder. 2014
Settled as a maritime and agricultural colony, North Carolina's history has always been intertwined with agriculture and farming. After the…
Civil War, North Carolina became the nation's top grower of tobacco, and one of the country's largest tobacco companies--the American Tobacco Company--flourished from the huge quantities of Eastern North Carolina-grown tobacco that was purchased. With the growing success of cotton farming and other crops and livestock--including corn, peanuts, and hogs--the region was particularly rich in subsistence farming. Over the course of the 20th century, farming and agriculture went through tremendous change. The familiar landscape of cotton and tobacco began to shift and include more varied crops, such as soybeans and sweet potatoes. At the same time, hand tools were exchanged for tractors and combines. Eastern North Carolina Farming showcases the rich history of this agriculturally dynamic region while telling the individual stories of farmers who grew for families, markets, and distribution.Matisse and Picasso: The Story of Their Rivalry and Friendship
By Jack Flam. 2003
Matisse and Picasso achieved extraordinary prominence during their lifetimes. They have become cultural icons, standing not only for different kinds…
of art but also for different ways of living. Matisse, known for his restraint and intense sense of privacy, for his decorum and discretion, created an art that transcended daily life and conveyed a sensuality that inhabited an abstract and ethereal realm of being. In contrast, Picasso became the exemplar of intense emotionality, of theatricality, of art as a kind of autobiographical confession that was often charged with violence and explosive eroticism. In Matisse and Picasso, Jack Flam explores the compelling, competitive, parallel lives of these two artists and their very different attitudes toward the idea of artistic greatness, toward the women they loved, and ultimately toward their confrontations with death.A Little Girl Dreams of Taking the Veil
By Dorothea Tanning, Max Ernst. 1982
In the course of browsing an illustrated book of objects—umbrellas, watches, tools, clothes—artist Max Ernst was struck by the items'…
unusual juxtapositions. By manipulating the Victorian-era engravings into striking tableaux and adding brief captions, Ernst invented the collage novel and transformed banal advertising art into revealing dramas rooted in his dreams and secret desires. A Little Girl Dreams of Taking the Veil was originally published in 1930 as Rêve d'une petite fille qui voulut entrer au Carmel. Its hallucinatory visions center on the nightmares of a girl who loses her virginity on the day of her first communion and resolves to become a nun. Ernst, a pioneer of the Dada movement and Surrealistic art, blends humor and irony in his exploration of the nonrational but very real intersection of religious ecstasy and erotic desire. A century after its debut, this profoundly peculiar book retains its shock value as well as its imaginative power.Staging Science
By Martin Willis. 2016
This book considers scientific performances across two centuries, from the early nineteenth century to the present day. Performances include demonstrations…
of technologies, experiments that look like theatre, theatre that looks like science, tourist representations and natural history film-making. Its key aim is to open debate on how scientific activity, both historical and contemporary, might be understood in the context of performance studies and the imaginative acts required to stage engaging performances. Scientific performances have become increasingly of interest to historians of science, literature and science scholars, and in the field of science studies. As yet, however, no work has sought to examine a range of scientific performances with the aim of interrogating and illuminating the kinds of critical and theoretical practices that might be employed to engage with them. With scientific performance likely to become ever more central to scholarly study in the next few years this volume offer a timely, and early, intervention in the existing debates, and aims, too, to be a touchstone for future work.Golf in Seattle and Tacoma (Images of Sports)

Varbanova reviews the existing theories and models of strategic management and then relates these specifically to cultural organisations. Also included are sections on entrepreneurship and innovations in the arts, considering the concept of a ‘learning organisation’ – an organisation able to adapt its strategy within a constantly changing, complex environment. The book is structured to walk the reader through each element of the strategic plan systematically. With a fresh approach, key questions, examples, international cases to connect theory with practice and suggestions for further reading, this book is designed to accompany classes on strategic planning, cultural management or arts management.Post-Colonial Cultures in France

By Joel Fuhrman. 2003
When Mehmet Oz, Dean Ornish, or any of New York's leading doctors have a patient whose life depends on losing…
weight, they call on Joel Fuhrman, M.D. In EAT TO LIVE, Dr. Fuhrman offers his healthy, effective, and scientifically proven plan for shedding radical amounts of weight quickly, and keeping it off. Losing weight under Dr. Fuhrman's plan is not about will power, it is about knowledge. The key to this revolutionary diet is the idea of nutrient density, as expressed by the simple formula, Health = Nutrients/Calories. When the ratio of nutrients to calories is high, fat melts away and health is restored. Losing 20 pounds in two to three weeks is just the beginning. The more high-nutrient food Dr. Fuhrman's patients consume, the more they are satisfied with fewer calories, and the less they crave fat and high-calorie foods. Designed for people who must lose 50 pounds or more in a hurry, EAT TO LIVE works for every dieter, even those who want to lose as little as 10 pounds quickly. No willpower required--just knowledge! The Art of Illustration
By Edmund J. Sullivan. 2016

define the principles behind good illustration. His treatise - richly illustrated with black-and-white engravings by Holbein, Dürer, Rubens, Blake, and many others - also offers suggestions on materials and methods. Sullivan, who came of age during the heyday of graphic design and book illustration, was a firm believer in free but faithful artistic interpretations. In The Art of Illustration, he conducts a fascinating journey through art history that ranges back and forth in time from his contemporaries -- including Beardsley, Doré, and Whistler -- to Botticelli and other old masters. Sullivan's knowledgeable and informative discourse covers symbolism, cartoons, the use of models, the illustration of poetry and plays, children's books, and a host of other topics of enduring interest to artists and art lovers. The Logic of Machines and Structures
By Paul Sandori. 2016
Based on common, everyday phenomena, the principles governing the balance of forces on machines and structures are extremely straightforward. Their…
expression in mathematical form, however, obscures their clarity. This volume exposes the principles of statics in their original simplicity, presenting them as an exercise in logic. The modern analytical method of reasoning is carefully preserved to assist students in their grasp of the thinking that underlies mathematical methods of analysis.Suitable for architecture and engineering students as well as other readers with minimal background in mathematics, this unique treatment also restores enjoyment to the study of statics. Author Paul Sandori develops the subject using crucial highlights and discoveries in the field's historical evolution, noting the brilliant early insights and intuitions that contributed to the modern science. The text is complemented by illustrations of source materials from Galileo, Newton, and others that document the discipline's evolution.Stage Fright: 40 Stars Tell You How They Beat America's #1 Fear
