The Business of Waste
By Raymond G. Stokes Roman Köster, Stephen C. Sambrook, Raymond G. Stokes, Roman Köster. 2013
The advent of consumer societies in the United Kingdom and West Germany after 1945 led to the mass 'production' of…
garbage. This book compares the social, cultural and economic fallout of the growing volume and changing composition of waste in the two countries from 1945 to the present through sustained attention to changes in the business of handling household waste. Though the UK and Germany are similar in population density, degrees of urbanisation, and standardisation, the two countries took profoundly different paths from low-waste to throwaway societies, and more recently, towards the goal of 'zero-waste'. The authors explore evolving balances between public and private provision in waste services; the transformation of public cleansing into waste management; the role of government legislation and regulation; emerging conceptualisations of recycling and resource recovery; and the gradual shift of the industry's regulatory and business context from local to national and then to international.Embrace Your Inner Wild
By Don Moseman, Mary Reynolds Thompson. 2011
Embrace Your Inner Wild: 52 Reflections for an Eco-Centric World is a brilliant, full-color book of photographs and reflections that…
invite you to seek out wildness wherever you find it - within or without.Don Moseman's spectacular photographs feature the wildlife and terrain of Marin County, California: the fiercely intelligent eyes of the coyote, the spiraling hawk in the supine sky, a bobcat prowling through golden grasses. These photos are paired with reflections by Mary Reynolds Thompson to awaken the reader to wonder. And to oneness.Don spent twenty-five years in San Quentin maximum-security prison in Marin County, California. In 1989, got sober and went straight, encouraged by nature as a guide. Later, taking up photography, the patience he learned in prison paid off. Don knows how to wait for the wild to come to him. Since 1983, the natural world has been key to Mary's successful recovery from alcoholism. A life coach and facilitator of poetry therapy, Mary has developed a unique program of ecological spirituality that connects clients to their true selves through nature.Embrace Your Inner Wild is a visual and verbal psalm to wildness, rooted in Don and Mary's shared love of the earth, its inhabitants, and the wild soul that longs to be set free.Wildlife Behavior and Conservation

interaction with wildlife. A thorough review of the current literature in conceptual areas, including norms, values, attitudes, emotions, wildlife value orientations, cultural change, and evolutionary forces/inherited tendencies is provided, and the importance of these areas in studying human-wildlife relationships is highlighted. No other book both considers the human relationship with wildlife and provides a theoretical framework for understanding this relationship on the individual, as well as cultural level. Who Cares About Wildlife? will be valuable both to students and to practitioners in wildlife management and conservation, as well those interested in the human relationship with wildlife, natural resources, and the environment. The Vicuña
By Kristi Anne Stølen, Mariela Borgnia, Verónica Benítez, Jane C. Wheeler, Hugo Yacobaccio, Jerry Laker, Renaudeau d' Arc Nadine, Desmond Mcneill, Cristian Bonacic, Marcelo Cassini, Gabriela Lichtenstein, Yanina Arzamendia, Pete Goddard, Bibiana Vilá, Jessica Gimpel, Ana Wawrzyk, Javier García Gomez, Iain Gordon. 2009
The vicuña is one of the few success stories of wildlife conservation. The focus is now shifting from protection to…
sustainable use. Internationally, policy development has followed the community-based conservation paradigm, which holds that economic benefits from wildlife management practices bring greater commitment on the part of local communities to protect both the species and its habitat. This book takes the position that sustainability is not guaranteed by sustainable use, and that both education and regulation are required to prevent the proliferation of unsustainable practices. The research from the countries presented in this book demonstrate the animal welfare, ecological, economic, social, and conservation trade-offs, which exist between different management systems. This links economics, social and conservation research to provide a unique insight into the viability of community-based wildlife management of a species which until recently was viewed simply as a conservation priority.Towards Sustainable Cities in China

By Chris Goodall. 2010
Respected, authoritative, award-winning author Chris Goodall tackles global warming reversal in this engaging and balanced book. Ten Technologies to Save…
the Planet - popular science writing at its most crucial - is arguably the most readable and comprehensive overview of large-scale solutions to climate change available. Goodall profiles ten technologies with the potential to slash global greenhouse emissions, explaining how they work and telling the stories of the inventors, scientists, and entrepreneurs who are driving them forward. Some of Goodall's selections, such as the electric car, are familiar. Others, like algae and charcoal, are more surprising. Illustrated with black-and-white photos and simple charts, Ten Technologies to Save the Planet combines cutting-edge analysis with straightforward explanations about pros and cons, and debunks myths along the way.Sustaining the World's Wetlands
By Richard Smardon. 2009
Written both as a textbook and as a professional reference book, Sustaining the World's Wetlands: Setting Policy and Resolving Conflicts…
contains detailed case studies of wetland management worldwide. Examinations of international wetland policy in Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America generate a discussion of the differences between wetland management issues in developed and developing countries, and culminate in suggested strategies for the future of wetland management. Key themes addressed in the case studies include the tradeoffs between sustainable use of wetlands for food, fuel, and fiber vs. the protection of ecosystem diversity and stability, and the respective roles of big international NGO's, national and regional government, and local community-based organizations when faced with wetland management issues. With its global scope and its emphasis on policy and management analysis, Sustaining the World's Wetlands is a unique and valuable tool both for students and for practitioners.Strategic Environmental Assessment for Policies
By Kulsum Ahmed, Ernesto Sanchez-Triana. 2008
Environmentally and socially sustainable policies are essential for good governance. Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) is the key tool for integrating…
environmental considerations into policies, programs and plans. This book focuses on SEA applied to policies. Through lessons learned from previous use of SEA on policies, it draws lessons on the strengths and weaknesses of current SEA methodology. It then goes on to analyze how policies are formulated and implemented and proposes a new conceptual framework for conducting SEA of policies thatpotentially could be more useful in influencing decision makers to integrate environmental sustainability considerations into policy formulation and implementation.Soil Remediation and Rehabilitation
By Helmut Meuser. 2012
This book provides a comprehensive overview of remediation and rehabilitation techniques and strategies for contaminated and anthropogenically disturbed land. Rehabilitation…
approaches in the urban environment, such as brownfield redevelopment and urban mining, are discussed. In relation to contaminated land, techniques for soil containment and decontamination of soil, soil vapour and groundwater are comprehensively and systematically presented. Complicated treatment techniques are schematically depicted and can be readily understood. Agricultural, silvicultural and environmentally sustainable rehabilitation strategies for reclaiming disturbed land/terrain in former mining or natural-resource extraction areas, such as open-cast mines, quarries, harvested peatlands, and subsided mining terrain (sinkholes), are introduced. This book will be a useful tool for students, researchers, private consultants and public authorities engaged in the treatment of contaminated or disturbed land.Restoring Disturbed Landscapes

By Luisa M Martínez, Juan B. Gallego-Fernández, Patrick A. Hesp. 2012
The continuously growing human population along the world's coasts will exacerbate the impact of human activities on all coastal environments.…
Restoration activities will therefore become increasingly important. In particular, sandy shores and coastal dunes will require significant restoration efforts because they are preferred sites for human settlement, industrial and urban development and tourism. With this book experts in the field present a comprehensive review of restoration studies and activities, where 'successful' and 'failed' studies or approaches from around the world are contrasted and compared. A major asset the book provides is a compendium of studies showing that coastal dune restoration has many definitions and thus leads to many different actions. This volume addresses those with an interest in conservation ecology and biology, coastal dune dynamics and geomorphology, and coastal management who are seeking information on the different strategies for coastal dune restoration applied in different regions of the world. Finally, it will be a valuable resource for coastal scientists and planners, as well as for local and state officials, residents of coastal communities, environmental advocates and developers.Restoration and Development of the Degraded Loess Plateau, China
By Norikazu Yamanaka, Sheng Du, Atsushi Tsunekawa, Guobin Liu. 2013
This book presents state-of-the-art scientific evidence and technological innovations to restore lands on the Loess Plateau of China, known worldwide…
for its serious land degradation and desertification problems. Supported by a rapidly developing Chinese economy and the dissemination of effective technology, the Grain-for-Green Project and Western Development Action launched by the Chinese government have resulted in successful ecological restoration and protection over the past 30 years. These programs have contributed not only to conservation of soil and water, but also to economic development. At the same time, however, these developmental interventions have brought new challenges that have not yet been fully addressed. The book describes (1) case studies of success and failure in practice, including rare success stories of combating desertification; (2) technical issues such as erosion control and breeding of stress-tolerant plant species, and socioeconomic measures taken by the Chinese government and lending policies with support from the World Bank; and (3) comprehensive measures against desertification, such as water and wind erosion, salinization, and deforestation. This volume is recommended for researchers and students above the undergraduate level in diverse fields including soil science, rural engineering, social technology and civil engineering, biology, ecology, climatology, physical and human geography, and developmental economics, among others. It also serves as a valuable resource for engineers, government officials, and NPOs and NGOs involved in afforestation, ecological restoration, combating desertification, disaster prevention, and sustainable rural development.Reshaping Environments: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Sustainability in a Complex World

managers with a tremendously valuable tool -- but only if they are able to understand its capabilities and capture its potential.Remote Sensing and GIS in Ecosystem Management identifies and articulates current and emerging information needs of those involved with the management of forest ecosystems. It explores the potential of remote-sensing/GIS technologies to address those needs, examining: the need for landscape-scale analysis to support forest ecosystem research and management current challenges in the development of remote-sensing/GIS applications case studies of different forest regions in the United States the potential for further development or declassification of military and aerospace remote-sensing/GIS technologies As well as providing important information for ecologists and resource managers, the book will serve as a valuable resource for legislative and judicial policymakers who do not have a technical background in either remote sensing or resource management but who are nonetheless called upon to make decisions regarding the protection and management of forest ecosystems.Protected Land
By Douglas J. Spieles. 2002
This is a book about ecosystems: the ways in which we perceive them, conceptualize them, protect them, and manipulate them. Ecosystems…
have been given considerable attention inrecent literature, and with good reason. Our growing comprehension of irreplaceable andimperiled ecosystem services has made it clear that we are in the midst of an ecological crisis. In response, various organizations, agencies, and individuals have dedicated themselves to thepreservation, restoration, and maintenance of ecological systems. The United States is a worldleader in this regard, building upon the legacy of giants like Thoreau, Muir, and Leopold. And yet, even as we scramble to rehabilitate and sustain ecosystems, the debate on their naturecontinues. In one corner are proponents of holism--those that see ecosystems as definableunits with recognizable and regenerative stable states.Primates of Gashaka

populations that inhabit or make use of them. This volume highlights the results of a ten-year German / Brazilian research project, called MADAM, in one of the largest continuous mangrove areas of the world, located in northern Brazil. Based on the analysis of the ecosystem dynamics, management strategies for the conservation and sustainable use of mangroves are presented and discussed. Beyond the scientific results, this book also provides guidelines for the development of international cooperation projects.Management Planning for Nature Conservation: A Theoretical Basis & Practical Guide
By Mike Alexander. 2013
The first edition of Mike Alexander's Management Planning for Nature Conservation, brought a new dimension to the modern literature on…
conservation management. This second edition, a significant enhancement of the original, deals with the development both, conceptual and practical, of adaptive management planning for nature conservation. It is about preparing management plans, and guides the reader through the entire process. Case-studies, including a conservation and access plan, demonstrate the planning process in action. This approach to planning can be applied to any place which is managed entirely, or in part, for wildlife. It can be applied to the management of species or habitats in any circumstance, regardless of site designation. The process is fully compatible with the Convention on Biological Diversity's 'ecosystem approach' to conservation management. Mike Alexander has long been at the forefront of developing management planning for conservation, with experience ranging from Uganda to Estonia, and from Costa Rica to Wales. He is the General Secretary of the Conservation Management System Consortium, a group of organisations with a common aim of raising standards and developing best practice in conservation management and planning. In 2012 Mike Alexander was elected a Fellow of the Society of Biology in recognition of his contribution to nature conservation and in particular management planning. This book has drawn on the experiences and expertise of the CMS consortium and other leaders in both conservation research and wildlife management from around the world. It is essential reading for professional conservation managers and any student studying management planning for conservation within a range of degree and postgraduate courses.Making Nature Whole
