The Pangborn Defence, a departure from Sibum's previous verse, will be something of a surprise for those who have followed…
his career. Poems written as letters to personages both real and imagined, there are political undertones to many rarely seen in Sibum's ouevre. But there is still the same attention to detail, the same craftsmanship, humour, love and originality.Never Shake A Family Tree

morto vent'anni prima. You've never, ever read a story like this. Ashley Young is stuck in an unsatisfying marriage and a dead-end job.…
But when a sexually transmitted plague breaks out in her small town--one that slowly transforms everyone infected into crazed zombielike sex fiends--everything about her life changes. Facing quarantine, National Guard barricades, the onset of winter, and a rapidly spreading, mysterious sex plague, Ashley and everyone else in her small Colorado town find their deepest feelings for one another surfacing...both amorously and violently. When everyone in Ashley's life begins taking comfort in one another's arms, no one really knows who's infected and who's not. And because the disease perpetuates itself as an aphrodisiac, sex--the very thing that offers comfort--only contributes to spreading the plague. In a crumbling world with little to lose, Ashley begins to discover a resilience she didn't know she possessed and a strength she's never had before. Her newly acquired agency may come at a price, however, when Ashley must ultimately choose between her own survival and saving the people she loves.DEAD IN BED by Bailey Simms delivers a tour-de-force series that's as emotionally incisive as it is shockingly sexy, as heartbreaking as it is hilarious, and as frightful as it is impossible to put down. Can Such Things Be?

Something About the Animal
By Cathy Stonehouse. 2011
In Something About the Animal, Cathy Stonehouse's first collection of short fiction, the world keeps coming apart at the seams:…
these are stories of imminent and often destructive crisis, which in their form and structure capture the hysterical edge of hallucinatory madness in a way few writers have ever managed. These are stories about the search for meaning, of fragile, haunted understanding; real life horror stories, stories bleakly, blackly humorous, but also imbued with real hope, generosity, and beauty; stories simply not reducible to cover copy. Cathy Stonehouse is a nightmarishly gifted author, and Something About the Animal is that rather magical exception to the rule; a truly breathtaking, unforgettable debut. The Captive Condition
By Kevin P. Keating. 2015
From a thrilling new voice in fiction comes a chilling and deliciously dark novel about an idyllic Midwestern college town…
that turns out to be a panorama of depravity and a nexus of horror. For years Normandy Falls has been haunted by its strange history and the aggrieved spirits said to roam its graveyards. Despite warnings, Edmund Campion is determined to pursue an advanced degree there. But Edmund soon learns he isn't immune to the impersonal trappings of fate: his girlfriend, Morgan Fey, smashes his heart; his adviser, Professor Martin Kingsley, crushes him with frivolous assignments; and his dead-end job begins to take a toll on his physical and mental health. One night he stumbles upon the body of Emily Ryan, an unapologetic townie, drowned in her family pool. Was it suicide or murder? In the days that follow, Emily's husband, Charlie, crippled by self-loathing and frozen with fear, attempts to flee his disastrous life and sends their twin daughters to stay with the Kingsleys. Possessed by an unnamed, preternatural power, the twins know that the professor seduced their mother and may have had a hand in her fate. With their piercing stares, the girls fill Martin with a remorse that he desperately tries to hide from his wife. Elsewhere, a low-level criminal named the Gonk takes over a remote cottage, complete with a burial ground and moonshine still, and devises plans for both. Xavier D'Avignon, the eccentric chef of a failing French restaurant, supplies customers with a hallucinogenic cocktail. And Colette Collins, an elderly local artist of the surreal, attends a retrospective of her work that is destined to set the whole town on fire. Kevin P. Keating's masterly novel delves into the deepest recesses of the human capacity for evil. From the Hardcover edition.A Blanket of Bitter Frost

By John Kendrick Bangs. 2012
The trouble with Harrowby Hall was that it was haunted, and, what was worse, the ghost did not content itself…
with merely appearing at the bedside of the afflicted person who saw it, but persisted in remaining there for one mortal hour before it would disappear. It never appeared except on Christmas Eve, and then as the clock was striking twelve, in which respect alone was it lacking in that originality which in these days is a sine qua non of success in spectral life. The owners of Harrowby Hall had done their utmost to rid themselves of the damp and dewy lady who rose up out of the best bedroom floor at midnight, but without avail. They had tried stopping the clock, so that the ghost would not know when it was midnight; but she made her appearance just the same, with that fearful miasmatic personality of hers, and there she would stand until everything about her was thoroughly saturated.Ghosts I Have Met

She was raised from then on by Mama Yaya, a gifted woman who shared with her the secrets of healing and magic. But it was Tituba's love of the slave John Indian that led her from safety into slavery, and the bitter, vengeful religion practiced by the good citizens of Salem, Massachusetts. Though protected by the spirits, Tituba could not escape the lies and accusations of that hysterical time. As history and fantasy merge, Maryse Conde, acclaimed author of TREE OF LIFE and SEGU, creates the richly imagined life of a fascinating woman.Phantom Effect

November rainstorm with two flat tires and the dead bodies of a cop and a co-ed named Marissa Madison in his trunk. Desperate to get off the highway, he drives his car on its back rims towards Exit 6. The car stalls on the ramp and Deseronto uses the last of its momentum to plunge over the crest of a steep slope and crash into a length of concrete pipe below. The car comes to rest on the edge of a construction site where machines are positioned to tear down an old Motel 6. For Deseronto, the worst is yet to come. Marissa Madison had been a psychic of sorts while alive, using her ability to assist people in their personal journeys. Now, the ghost of Marissa will utilize her strange gift, trapping Deseronto in the abandoned motel, and forcing him to live the last, fatal week of her own life as a passive passenger in her body . . . Soon, Deseronto will experience something truly horrific: the mind-numbing terror of being stalked by himself. The Hound

And instinctively, once alone, I made for the places where she had painted her extraordinary pictures; I tried to see…
what she had seen. Perhaps, now that she had opened my mind to another view, I should be sensitive to some similar interpretation--and possibly by way of literary expression. If I were to write about the place, I asked myself, how should I treat it? I deliberately invited an interpretation in the way that came easiest to me--writing.The Voice in the Night
