Taking Pascal's Wager: Faith, Evidence and the Abundant Life
Par Michael Rota. 2016
Since we can't know with absolute certainty that God exists, each of us in a sense makes a bet. If…
we believe in God and are right, the benefits include eternal life. If we are wrong, the downside is limited. On the other hand, we might not believe in God. If we are right, then we will have lived in line with reality. If we are wrong, however, the consequences could be eternally disastrous. This was the challenge posed by the French philosopher Blaise Pascal over three hundred years ago. But Michael Rota contends that Pascal's argument is still compelling today. Since there is much to gain (for ourselves as well as for others) and relatively little to lose, the wise decision is to seek a relationship with God and live a Christian life. Rota considers Pascal's wager and the roles of uncertainty, evidence and faith in making a commitment to God. By engaging with themes such as decision theory, the fine-tuning of the universe, divine hiddenness, the problem of evil, the historicity of the resurrection and the nature of miracles, he probes the many dynamics at work in embracing the Christian faith. In addition, Rota takes a turn not found in many books of philosophy. He looks at the actual effects of such a commitment in three recent, vivid, gripping examples—Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Jean Vanier and Immaculée Ilibagiza. Like Pascal, Rota leaves us with a question: What wager will we make?
Machine and Sovereignty: For a Planetary Thinking
Par Yuk Hui. 2024
Developing a new political thought to address today&’s planetary crises What is &“planetary thinking&” today? Arguing that a new approach…
is urgently needed, Yuk Hui develops a future-oriented mode of political thought that encompasses the unprecedented global challenges we are confronting: the rise of artificial intelligence, the ecological crisis, and intensifying geopolitical conflicts. Machine and Sovereignty starts with three premises. The first affirms the necessity of developing a new language of coexistence that surpasses the limits of nation-states and their variations; the second recognizes that political forms, including the polis, empire, and the state, are technological phenomena, which Lewis Mumford terms &“megamachines.&” The third suggests that a particular political form is legitimated and rationalized by a corresponding political epistemology. The planetary thinking that this book sketches departs from the opposition between mechanism and organism, which characterized modern thought, to understand the epistemological foundations of Hegel&’s political state and Schmitt&’s Großraum and their particular ways of conceiving the question of sovereignty. Through this reconstruction, Hui exposes the limits of the state and reflects on a new theoretical matrix based on the interrelated concepts of biodiversity, noodiversity, and technodiversity. Arguing that we are facing the limit of modernity, of the eschatological view of history, of globalization, and of the human, Hui conceives necessary new epistemological and technological frameworks for understanding and rising to the crises of our present and our future. Global Discontents: Conversations on the Rising Threats to Democracy (The American Empire Project)
Par Noam Chomsky, David Barsamian. 2017
In this compelling set of interviews, the intellectual discusses contemporary threats to democracy, from economic inequality to the Trump presidency. In…
wide-ranging discussions with David Barsamian, his longtime interlocutor, Noam Chomsky asks us to consider “the world we are leaving to our grandchildren”: one imperiled by climate change and the growing potential for nuclear war. If the current system is incapable of dealing with these threats, he argues, it’s up to us to radically change it.The twelve interviews in Global Discontents examine the recent global developments: the rise of ISIS, the reach of state surveillance, growing anger over economic inequality, conflicts in the Middle East, and the presidency of Donald Trump. In personal reflections on his Philadelphia childhood, Chomsky also describes his own intellectual journey and the development of his uncompromising stance as America’s premier dissident intellectual.“Well-informed salvos to please or enrage, depending on one’s politics.” —Kirkus Reviews
Up from Nothing: The Untold Story of How We (All) Succeed
Par John Hope Bryant. 2020
American opportunity is not dead. Bestselling author and entrepreneur John Hope Bryant outlines the mindset and practices that will allow…
us to achieve the American Dream, no matter what our current circumstances are.Americans have lost faith in their country. With job security disappearing and fewer glimpses of a better future, it can feel like we are barely surviving, much less thriving, in today's problematic economy. Americans want the "old" America back-- the America where opportunity comes knocking at the front door. But the real problem, John Hope Bryant says, is that we're forgetting that this is still the Land of Opportunity--a site of upward mobility, a place teeming with different ways to create and grow wealth. The opportunities of today are not only greater than the obstacles, but they are greater than they have ever been. What we need, he says, is a mindset shift--a way of recalibrating to recognize that there is still a bounty of resources for establishing entrepreneurship and success in this country. The first step for us, for America, is to remember our storyline--how, coming up from nothing, we established and harnessed the invincible American Dream.
Business Ethics, Seventh Edition: A Stakeholder and Issues Management Approach
Par Joseph W. Weiss. 2021
The seventh edition of this pragmatic guide to determining right and wrong in the workplace is updated with new case…
studies, exercises, and ancillary materials.Joseph Weiss's Business Ethics is a pragmatic, hands-on guide for determining right and wrong in the business world. To be socially responsible and ethical, Weiss maintains, businesses must acknowledge the impact their decisions can have on the world beyond their walls. An advantage of the book is the integration of a stakeholder perspective with an issues and crisis management approach so students can look at how a business's actions affect not just share price and profit but the well-being of employees, customers, suppliers, the local community, the larger society, other nations, and the environment. Weiss includes twenty-three cases that immerse students directly in contemporary ethical dilemmas. Eight new cases in this edition include Facebook's (mis)use of customer data, the impact of COVID-19 on higher education, the opioid epidemic, the rise of Uber, the rapid growth of AI, safety concerns over the Boeing 737, the Wells Fargo false saving accounts scandal, and plastics being dumped into the ocean. Several chapters feature a unique point/counterpoint exercise that challenges students to argue both sides of a heated ethical issue. This edition has eleven new point/counterpoint exercises, addressing questions like, Should tech giants be broken apart? What is the line between free speech and dangerous disinformation? Has the Me Too movement gone too far? As with previous editions, the seventh edition features a complete set of ancillary materials for instructors: teaching guides, test banks, and PowerPoint presentations.

how to shift to an empowered, employee-driven work environment. Empowerment Takes More Than a Minute tells the story of a young manager whose attempts to turn his troubled company around through traditional top-down, command-and-control management are failing. Step by step, the expert helps him understand why his past and present efforts have fallen short and figure out what he needs to do to create an empowered workforce. The process as it unfolds is complex, paradoxical, and counterintuitive—but well worth the effort. This new edition dispels the notion that empowerment is a bygone fad. No matter what its name, the essential concept—that organizations can achieve extraordinary results by recognizing and taking advantage of the skills, experience, and knowledge already existing in the organization—will always be relevant. good decisions while balancing inevitable tensions and knowing when to take risks. You need to keep your values in sight regardless of the pressures around you and stay calm in the storms that arise. At its core, leadership is a daily, ongoing practice, a journey toward becoming your best self and inviting others to do the same. And at the heart of this daily practice is courage. And that's where The Courage Way comes in. It's a guide to leadership that names and explores this important resource and shows leaders how to access and draw upon courage in all that they do. It has its roots in the work of Parker J. Palmer, who in fifty years of teaching, speaking, and writing has explored the human spirit—what he has called "the inner landscape"—and its role in life and leadership.Shelly Francis identifies key ingredients needed to cultivate courage, the most fundamental being trust—in ourselves and in each other. She describes the Center for Courage & Renewal's Circle of Trust approach, centered around eleven "touchstones," poetic and practical operating guidelines for holding the meaningful conversations of inner work and trust building. Each chapter features true stories of how leaders in all kinds of settings have overcome challenges and strengthened their organizations through touchstones like "Extend invitation, not demand," "No fixing, saving, advising, or correcting," and "When the going gets rough, turn to wonder."This graceful and inspiring book is a guide to courageous leadership and a journey of self-discovery—the two are inextricable. As Francis writes, "Courage is not only in you—it is you. In your moments of courage, that's when you meet your true self."

The Female Vision: Women's Real Power at Work
Par Julie Johnson, Sally Helgesen. 2010
Groundbreaking new insights from the author of The Female Advantage Redefines what women have to offer to the world Provides…
a fresh and actionable perspective for organizations seeking to leverage women’s best talents Women see the world through a distinctive lens. What they see is defined by what they notice, what they value and how they connect the dots. In this brilliant and strongly argued new book, Sally Helgesen and Julie Johnson demonstrate why the female vision constitutes women’s most powerful asset in the workplace and show how women and organizations can use it to strong advantage. The authors describe the three elements of the female vision and explore the specific benefits that each provides. Women’s capacity for broad-spectrum notice widens the scope of information available to organizations and provides vital clues about relationships, shifting markets and potential conflicts. Women’s focus on the quality of day-to-day experience rather than abstract measures of achievement provides a way to restore balance to a 24/7 workplace in which endemic stress has become routine. Women’s penchant for viewing work in a larger social context offers a powerful means for moving beyond sterile game metaphors to engage motivation at a profound and authentic level. The extraordinary power of the female vision has been overlooked because it is countercultural in most organizations and because its benefits have been difficult to measure. But as Helgesen and Johnson make clear, the advent of a team-based, service-oriented interconnected global business environment that seeks customized markets and must stir the passions of highly diverse employees requires precisely the skills that the female vision encompasses. The potential pay off to organizations in terms of creativity, strategic insight and the ability to engage and inspire diverse talents is undeniable. Drawing on multiple veins of research, including their own Satisfaction Profile survey, the authors offer a totally fresh and even startling perspective on the true value that women bring to work. The Female Vision lays out exactly what companies must do to engage, energize and support talented women, and shows women how to nurture and sustain this power.
