She deserved more. They all did. A gripping and emotional new suspense novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling…

author of This is Where it Ends.A terrible accident. A horrible loss. A regrettable tragedy. That's all anyone in Fenix can talk about when a fire consumes the local high school, taking the life of a student. The town mourns, except who really knew—let alone cared about—Eden when she was alive? And why was she in the building that night?Five teens each hold a piece of the truth about what happened. They also have their own secrets, secrets they will fight to protect with the same fury as the blaze that killed Eden. But silence is meant to be broken, and this story can't be extinguished…

Originally published in 1990, Anthropology and the Riddle of the Sphinx: Paradoxes of Change in the Life Course, seeks to…

relate the problems of maturation and ageing to the life course as a whole. As it is treated here, the riddle posed by the sphinx asks ‘What is it that changes as we age?’ and is concerned with the enigmas of this total process. Ultimately, the ways in which we experience these problems stem from our view of ageing and the contradictions of society itself. The essays in this volume consider aspects of this problem with reference to a variety of cultures. The young, the mature, and the elderly have distinctive identities, but they form a continuum whose profile is culturally constructed.Anthropology and the Riddle of the Sphinx: Paradoxes of Change in the Life Course is intended as a contribution to the growing literature on ageing, deliberately broadening the topic in the search for a wider understanding. This volume aims to stimulate interest in neglected aspects of the ageing process within social anthropology and to present an anthropological point of view to others who have an interest in problems associated with the life course. It will be of particular value to the students of social anthropology and medical sociology. It was originally published as part of the ASA Monographs series: https://www.routledge.com/ASA-Monographs/book-series/SE0127

Originally published posthumously in 1980, this book centres on 5 British poets – Geoffrey Hill, Philip Larkin, Jon Silkin, Thom…

Gunn and Charles Tomlinson – and on the emergence in postwar British poetry of ‘double-lyrics’, poems which have, according to the author ‘become two persons, two ways of expressing and attending critically in dramatic divisive conflict.’ The nature and significance of the double lyric is first demonstrated by close readings of Silkin’s Defence, Tomlinson’s Prometheus and Hill’s In Piam Memoriam. Further chapters focus on the impressive poems which have arisen out of the stress between ideological commitment and imaginative realization in Silkin’s work, the conflict between intuition and perception in the poetry of Tomlinson, and the split between the texture of Gunn’s language and the non-verbal experience evoked in his poems. Finally, Merle Brown presents the last phase of F. R. Leavis’ collaborative literary and cultural criticism as strikingly close to the poetic achievements of Hill, Silkin, Tomlinson and Gunn.

George Eliot thought of herself as a teacher, as did her contemporaries. Their view that her writing was not simply…

influenced in a relatively haphazard way by her philosophical and scientific reading but was a deliberate and consistent attempt to synthesize in fiction an elaborate and coherent theoretical analysis of the human situation is studied in this book, originally published in 1984. Eliot’s Associationist philosophy, her Feuerbachian readings of religion, her ethic of Submission and her sense that Positivism can be transcended in art and vision are here subjected to a thorough Marxist, Nietzschean and psycho-analytical critique.

also an accomplished writer, will stir clamorous approval and dissent. But none who read it will ever view the most modern literature from quite the same angle as before. This book breaks new ground and establishes a rationale of criticism which is at once intensely interesting and valuable.” Today it can be read in its historical context. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1923. First published in 1970, Australian Economic Development in the Twentieth Century analyses aspects of Australian economic development in the twentieth…

century and places them in historical and international perspective. In Australia, the nineteenth century has been studied much more intensively than the twentieth, and in this latter period the long-run examination of almost any economic topic must break new ground. The main economic histories of the period were written either before the Second World War or come close to general history. Earlier works have naturally dated, and little has been done to integrate the periods before and after the war.The book takes a step towards filling a wide gap in our understanding of Australian development and covers the period from the depression of the 1890s right up to the 1960s. It is the product of a team of Australia’s economic historians working together, but each sovereign on his own special subject. This volume will appeal not only to economic historians but to a wider public interested in Australia’s history.

In Russia in the Making (originally published in 1957), John Lawrence presents the long and complicated history of Russia as…

a living and intelligible whole from the very beginning. Based on a wide knowledge of Russian history and a considerable experience of Soviet ways, his book provides an admirable starting point for wider reading. The author gives a clear outline which demonstrates how authoritarianism is in the tradition of Russian history. Full value is given to the immense changes brought about by the revolution, and the book ends with an analysis of the changes in social structure that forced Stalin’s work into another mould. This book demands no previous knowledge of its subject. The author has used his knowledge of Soviet ways to produce from a complicated and confusing record a most readable and easily digestible narrative.

Revolt Against the Dead: The Modernization of a Mayan Community in the Highlands of Guatemala (Routledge Revivals)

First published in 1979, Revolt Against the Dead describes the changing lifestyle of the Aguacatec Indians, a Mayan peasant people…

of the northwestern highlands of Guatemala. The author presents the societal transformation from an economic, social, political, and religious perspective. The book explores both internal and external factors responsible for bringing about the change in the Aguacatan community. It emphasizes the interplay between changing local conditions and outside influences. As many factors that occurred at different times were responsible for the transformation, most of the book is organized into a kind of history. The local events are therefore presented as three major epochs—traditional Aguacatan; a transitional period of collapse; and the contemporary, new order. This volume will be of interest to students and researchers of anthropology and history.

First published in 1951, In Defence of Reason is a series of philosophical essays written at various times. Some of…

them are devoted to the interpretation of Kant’s philosophy, a subject which the author has made specially his own. Many of them, however, are concerned with more general topics, among which may be mentioned fashion and philosophy, self-identity, and Existentialism as an attitude to life. The main interest throughout is the defence of reason against views which reduce man to a plaything of circumstances and make his moral judgments the mere expression of non-rational emotions. This book will appeal to students and researchers of philosophy.

How was a billiards table lit in 1763, or the stage of the Red Bull playhouse in 1673? The earliest…

red and green traffic light was in London in 1868; but what was street lighting like in Paris in 1524, or San Jose, California, in 1885? How did the early U.S. settlers light their homes, and how did this compare with the homes of Sumeria 4500 years ago, or with Stone-age lighting 15000 years ago? How were 4000 candles lit in less than a minute at the crowning of an English king, and what did Notre Dame look like with 1600 fat candles burning at the funeral of a French one? How were early lighthouses lit, and how were they built? What light did they use in an operating theatre 2500 years ago, and what were the rules for the surgeon who used it? How did Michael Angelo paint at night, and were paintings of night scenes accurate? The answers to all these questions are to be found in The Social History of Lighting (originally published in 1958), representing the fruits of careful historical research over many years in a virtually unexplored field. We read with horror of conditions in slave ships, warships, and emigrant ships because we no longer realize that to have no light was absolutely normal below decks; just as it was equally normal not to work after dark. The effect of light, or the lack of it, on social history should provide much food for thought. It is fortunate that the subject is also full of surprises and entertainment value for the general reader as well as the historian. The author, to present effectively the numerous contemporary references upon which this study is based, made a series of tests involving lengthy vigils by the lights available in the past. The result is an authoritative work that will be invaluable professionally to historians, curators, and stage and screen producers.

A major new collection of essays by Ramachandra Guha, Democrats and Dissenters is a work of rigorous scholarship on topics…

of compelling contemporary interest, written with elegance and wit. The book covers a wide range of themes: from the varying national projects of India’s neighbours to political debates within India itself, from the responsibilities of writers to the complex relationship between democracy and violence. It has essays critically assessing the work of Amartya Sen and Eric Hobsbawm, commentaries on the tragic predicament of tribals in India–who are, as Guha demonstrates, far worse off than Dalits or Muslims, yet get a fraction of the attention–and on the peculiar absence of a tradition of conservative intellectuals in India. Each essay takes up an important topic or an influential intellectual, as a window to explore major political and cultural debates in India and the world. Democrats and Dissenters is a book that is widely read, and even more widely discussed.
