Patient with Acute Thoracic Myelopathy due to Degenerative Disease (Elements in Emergency Neurosurgery)
By James M. Robins, Deb Pal. 2025
Whilst thoracic myelopathy secondary to degenerative disease is relatively uncommon, left untreated it carries significant morbidity. It is thus of…
critical importance that patients are correctly diagnosed and managed expediently and effectively. Unfortunately, the management of thoracic myelopathy can be challenging, not least due to the technical difficulty accessing the site of compression and indeed optimum management is also debated. In this Element the authors present background, clinical features, diagnosis, and pitfalls and then a handy management algorithm for this critical neurosurgical condition.
Samuel Beckett and Medicine
By Ulrika Maude. 2025
Samuel Beckett and Medicine offers the first sustained analysis of the author's abiding interest in medicine and medical discourses, advancing…
insights into the representation of illness, neurodiversity, disability, ageing, and dying in his work. It analyses Beckett's representation of the production of language, offering new ways of understanding the often perplexing formal and stylistic experimentation of his work. The book addresses the many automatic and habitual functions staged in his writing and considers the impact of nerve theory, reflexes, affect, and the viscera on his work. It advances new readings of Beckett's poetry, prose, and television and stage plays, drawing on his reading notes on medicine and psychology, and on his correspondence and critical writings. Through its refusal to aestheticize embodied experience or to yield to the metaphysical consolations of literature, Beckett's work challenges us to confront the intricacies of embodied being and to encounter the question of finitude.
Black Gurl Reliable: Pedagogies of Vulnerability and Transgression (Black Lives and Liberation)
By Dominique C. Hill. 2025
Black Gurl Reliable does the original work of curating Black girls&’ and women&’s experiences and experiential knowledge, indexing sociocultural tactics…
(schooling) that foreclose Black girl aliveness, while advancing embodiment as a key ingredient of Black mattering. Elevating Black Girlhood Studies as an ethos, narratives presented offer redress to inequities and hauntings of race-gender structures of dominance and position Black girls and girlhood as more than lamentation and what happens to the body. Hill solicits the strength and utility of arts-based methods in capturing identity, performance, and experimental design for ephemerality and improvisation. Hill makes clear Black feminism&’s insistence that knowledge and possibility are produced through the body. As a means of mitigating the deleterious effects of schooling on Black girls&’ and women&’s bodies and making legible the insights and knowledge produced from schooling experiences, Hill introduces the concept of Transgressngroove. This living feminist practice explores the relationships between Black girlhood, education, and the body, as researched for over a decade through workshops, consulting, classrooms, personal development, and other teaching/learning spaces.

Positive Operators and Fixed-Point Theorems with Applications (Industrial and Applied Mathematics)
By S. A. Mohiuddine, Anupam Das, Dragan S. Djordjević. 2025
This book presents original research on the theory of positive operators, alongside fixed-point theorems and their diverse applications. It introduces…
various positive operators and explores their approximation properties, including Korovkin-type theorems, Voronovskaja-type results, convergence rate, and other related findings. Additionally, the book addresses the existence of solutions for various differential and integral equations in different Banach spaces by using Darbo-type fixed-point theorems. This book also presents an interplay between positive operators and fixed-point theory. Each chapter is self-contained, addressing a current problem and outlining solutions and potential applications. The chapters provide sufficient background to ensure that new definitions and results can be understood independently.

This open access book investigates the epistemological concept of and the knowledge transfer interwoven with the moveable paper wheels found…
in medieval and early modern books—the so-called &“volvelles.&” The earliest known volvelles emerged in the mid-thirteenth century and were cut out and installed by the reader, often appearing in books dealing with astronomical subjects. The brain processes and remembers images more easily than words—the so-called &“picture superiority effect&”—especially if the images move, making volvelles a useful method to help students of the Quadrivium memorizing the heavenly movements, thus the composition of a device embedded within a text promises a comprehensive insight into the didactic concepts of early modern knowledge transfer. The Tractatus de Sphaera by Johannes de Sacrobosco (1195–1256), the standard university textbook for astronomy from the thirteenth until the seventeenth century, was particularly noted as containing volvelles of different kinds. The project &“The Sphere,&” located at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, has collected a corpus of 359 printed De sphaera editions, building a promising basis for examining different volvelles and placing the results in a cultural context. These volumes had never been analyzed in detail before, nor was there such a large corpus that could provide a quantitative database for such an investigation. The results of the book show that a book and knowledge tradition as widespread as that of the Sphaera contained more than one third of volvelles and was used in university teaching in the early modern period. For historians, this sheds light on a new aspect of movable paper instruments in university didactics and book history in the early modern period.
Das achaimenidisch-persische Imperium (Springer Companions Geschichte)
By Julian Degen. 2025
Combining publicly available Google Street View (GSV) images with deep learning and radiative transfer models enables researchers to assess urban…
physical and thermal environments, especially in high-density areas. This book introduces this advanced approach, which provides large-scale, high-accuracy, and high-density measurements of street-level urban features—key to understanding urban radiation balance and thermal dynamics.By leveraging GSV images, this method directly characterizes urban streetscapes, including structural and geometric attributes, allowing for a comprehensive assessment. Moreover, the methods can be applied to any geographical location covered by GSV, making it a low-cost and effective tool for urban studies globally. This is particularly advantageous compared to traditional 3D-GIS models, which may not always be freely available or as extensive in coverage as GSV images.Lessons from Street Sensing provide data-driven insights for urban planning and governance. The accurate mapping of street view factors and solar irradiance helps identify areas with insufficient greenery, excessive or insufficient solar exposure, and other urban environment issues. These insights can help policymakers and urban planners mitigate negative environmental impacts and improve urban living conditions.
Ecological Connectivity of Forest Ecosystems
By Martin Braun, Katharina Lapin, Janine Oettel, Heino Konrad. 2025
This is an open access book. This professional volume provides scientific background and practical guidance on forest management in light…
of ecological connectivity. Readers will gain a great understanding of shifting species in response to climate change and the resulting loss of various resources. The main drivers of these variations are the quality of the availability, quantity, and quality of habitats in the landscape, the genetic diversity of species populations, and the ability to navigate through a fragmented landscape matrix. The connectivity of habitats is gaining importance in the combat of both, the biodiversity crisis and the climate change crisis. Improving ecological connectivity, however, does not automatically benefit all species, as the examples described in the book demonstrate. Specific planning tools, active monitoring protocols, and management measures are needed to increase the benefit for species with low dispersal and small population size, which generally fail to migrate. Assisted migration can help to prevent species extinction, but also offer opportunities for pathogens to cross geographical barriers. The vast majority of the known diversity of plants, fungi, vertebrates, and invertebrates depends on forest ecosystems. This volume helps to spread this message and prepare students for their later careers in the forestry sector, while also informing active practitioners and policy makers.

This book provides an extensive overview of the latest developments in information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the tourism and…
hospitality industry. Featuring papers presented at the International Federation for IT and Travel & Tourism’s (IFITT) 32nd annual ENTER International eTourism Conference (ENTER25) held in Wroclaw, Poland, this book examines the future of the tourism and hospitality industry and the impact ICTs such as generative AI, robotics, and Internet of things (IoT) has in creating a sustainable future for the industry. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) continue to revolutionize travel, tourism, and hospitality. Over 30+ years, the ENTER eTourism conference has been at the forefront of providing insight on the use and impact of new technologies for travel, tourism and hospitality practitioners and researchers. However, the rapid development and deployment of new developments, including generative AI (GenAI), service robotics, IoT, and Extended Realities (XR) technologies, among others, call for a rapid and careful reassessment of ICT in tourism, particularly including ethical and societal considerations. Examining the answer to questions such as how can technology help businesses and organizations be more agile, innovative, and resilient in difficult times; what role does technology play in driving sustainable development; how emerging technologies impact customer and employee experiences, and how challenges and dangers presented by technological disruption can be addressed, this book is valuable to scholars, researchers, students, and practitioners in tourism and hospitality.

Histories of Science: Natural Philosophy in the Eighteenth-Century Atlantic World
By David Alff, Danielle Spratt. 2025
Spreading the news of scientific breakthroughs in the eighteenth centuryHistories of Science shows how different forms of media communicated scientific…
breakthroughs during the long eighteenth century, bringing together eighteen humanities scholars to discuss the representation, reception, and application of natural philosophy in the Atlantic world. In particular, the authors focus on descriptions of scientific discoveries in popular print, with essays on topics as varied as placebo pills, irrigation systems, and navigational technology. And while each contributor advances a discrete argument, the collection coheres in its shared questions of methodology, historicity, and ethics. Histories of Science expands our record of the past, our understanding of the present, and our ability to imagine the future.
In the early 1980s, the survey was the most widely used method of social research, but it had been the…
object of much damaging criticism. Critics maintained that there were philosophical flaws inherent in survey practice which made it unacceptable as valid method; sociology students were taught that surveys are ‘positivist’ and that alternatives should be sought wherever possible. In The Survey Method, originally published in 1982, Catherine Marsh examines such claims and shows that much of this criticism was ill-founded.The book shows that surveys do not have to be mere superficial glimpses of the surface features of processes, fact-gathering exercises or opinion polls. Properly designed, executed and analysed, they can actually provide the kind of evidence that social theorists, concerned with uncovering dynamic aspects of social life, will want to use. Catherine Marsh challenges the contention that different research procedures automatically have to commit those who use them either to a particular theory of knowledge, a view of human nature or even a political stance. The Survey Method is neither a pure defence of surveys nor a textbook on how to do them. It does, after all, criticise the kinds of surveys that are often done, and it is particularly hostile to some new and manipulative developments in the often anti-democratic use made of survey results and opinion polls. Catherine Marsh’s aim is to contribute to the methodological debate on survey research. Although the book will find most of its readers among academic sociologists, it also contains a wealth of detail on the history of surveys and an extensive annotated bibliography of the major survey literature. It will accordingly prove essential reading for practising social researchers while re-establishing the credentials of survey research amongst the broader social science community.
For the early pioneers of the social indicator movement, the possibilities of doing social good by developing the tools of…
social measurement seemed endless. However, in the early 1980s these high, and perhaps naïve, hopes remained unfulfilled, especially for the data needs of the policy-maker. If not pessimistic, administrators and public policy-makers were at least guarded about the usefulness of social indicators as an aid to increasingly complex decision-making.These difficulties reflected both policy-related and methodological issues. Originally published in 1981, Social Measurement and Social Indicators is not a ‘how-to’ guide on the construction of social indicators, but rather a critical and optimistic view of these central issues, as embodied in the literature and in practice at the time. Michael Carley contrasts some of the basic problems of social measurement with government’s needs for reliable information, organised by their policy usefulness and statistical sophistication. The book then discusses the critical relationship between social indicators and social theories and models, as well as the role of social information in the policy process. Later chapters look at the audience, the problems, and the prospects for national social reports; and explore in detail three different applications of social indicators to urban analysis. Throughout the book helpful examples are drawn from North American, UK and European experience.Social Measurement and Social Indicators is aimed at a cross-disciplinary audience in government and the universities. For students, it will serve as a compact introduction to the broad field of social indicators; for administrators, it explores philosophical and measurement problems and suggests criteria for interpretation; for researchers, it places social indicator efforts into a wider policy analysis perspective – with its inescapable political value judgemental, and bureaucratic aspects.
