Biology of Algae, Lichens and Bryophytes
By Wolfram Beyschlag, Burkhard Büdel, Thomas Friedl. 2024
As a reader of this book you will become familiar with current, up-to-date comprehensive knowledge about all classes of eukaryotic…
algae, the cyanobacteria, and symbiotic interactions of algae and cyanobacteria with other organisms. For example, the lichens are symbiotic consortia and a prominent example of a particularly successful ‘evolution by cooperation’. We expand even to the beginnings of terrestrial plant life and the bryophytes, which are gradually transmitting to the vascular plants. We collectively call this enormous phylogenetic wealth of photoautotrophic organisms the ‘new cryptogams’, abandoning the traditional definition of cryptogams. The new cryptogams are all those autotrophic organisms that share being hydro-passive, meaning that they are unable of controlling water uptake or release, in contrast to vascular plants. While being basal of and phylogenetically much more diverse than the vascular plants, the new cryptogams are ecologically highly relevant in all ecosystems of our Planet. They are responsible for more than half of the Earth’s annual oxygen production.

Epistemic Life in the Polis: Ancient Insights into Contemporary Issues
By Marcelo D. Boeri, Leandro De Brasi. 2025
This book shows the interesting connections within political epistemology that can be established between ancient approaches and contemporary ones. It…
stems from the conviction that ancient thought can be brought into discussion with contemporary views. Although the book is not intended as an exegetical work, the authors offer detailed interpretations of ancient philosophers while taking into consideration recent specialized discussions in the scholarship with a focus mainly on the systematic aspects of those philosophers rather than on the historical ones. By exploiting insights of Ancient Greek philosophers, and providing an examination of certain intellectual attitudes and virtues that have both an ethical-political and epistemic dimension, the reader will better understand contemporary issues within political epistemology.

Somewhere Inside: One Sister's Captivity in North Korea and the Other's Fight to Bring Her Home
By Laura Ling, Lisa Ling. 2010
“A page-turning account of not only international geopolitics, sisterhood, and familial triumph, but also a portrait of humanity at its…
best.” —Deepak ChopraOn March 17, 2009, while filming a documentary on the Chinese-North Korean border, Laura Ling and her colleague Euna Lee were violently apprehended by North Korean soldiers, charged with trespassing and “hostile acts,” and imprisoned by Kim Jong Il’s notoriously secretive Communist state. Kept totally apart, they endured months of interrogations and a trial before North Korea’s highest court that led to a sentence of twelve years of hard labor in a North Korean prison camp. When news of the arrest reached Laura’s sister, journalist Lisa Ling, she immediately began a campaign to get Laura released. Her efforts led her from the State Department to the higher echelons of the media world and eventually to the White House. Lisa takes us deep into the drama between people in the highest levels of government, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Vice President Al Gore, and eventually former President Bill Clinton, who arrived in North Korea in mid-August for a suspenseful rescue.Somewhere Inside is a timely, inspiring, and page-turning tale of survival set against the canvas of international politics. Writing with their strong, poignant voices, both sisters go beyond the headlines to reveal the unique bond that has sustained them throughout the most horrifying ordeal of their lives.“A riveting story of captivity and the enduring faith, determination, and love of two sisters.” —Booklist (starred review)“A gripping tale of family bonds and love, national pride, and precarious politics.” —Times Record News (Wichita Falls, Texas)
Somewhere Sisters: A Story of Adoption, Identity, and the Meaning of Family
By Erika Hayasaki. 2022
An NPR Best Book of 2022 An incredible, deeply reported story of identical twins Isabella and Hà, born in Viêt…
Nam and raised on opposite sides of the world, each knowing little about the other&’s existence until they were reunited as teenagers, against all odds. &“Stirring and unforgettable—a breathtaking adoption saga like no other.&” —Robert Kolker It was 1998 in Nha Trang, Việt Nam, and Liên struggled to care for her newborn twin girls. Hà was taken in by Liên&’s sister, and she grew up in a rural village with her aunt, going to school and playing outside with the neighbors. They had sporadic electricity and frequent monsoons. Hà&’s twin sister, Loan, was adopted by a wealthy, white American family who renamed her Isabella. Isabella grew up in the suburbs of Chicago with a nonbiological sister, Olivia, also adopted from Việt Nam. Isabella and Olivia attended a predominantly white Catholic school, played soccer, and prepared for college. But when Isabella&’s adoptive mother learned of her biological twin back in Việt Nam, all of their lives changed forever. Award-winning journalist Erika Hayasaki spent years and hundreds of hours interviewing each of the birth and adoptive family members. She brings the girls&’ experiences to life on the page, told from their own perspectives, challenging conceptions about adoption and what it means to give a child a good life. Hayasaki contextualizes the sisters&’ experiences with the fascinating and often sinister history of twin studies, intercountry and transracial adoption, and the nature-versus-nurture debate, as well as the latest scholarship and conversation surrounding adoption today, especially among adoptees. For readers of All You Can Ever Know and American Baby, Somewhere Sisters is a richly textured, moving story of sisterhood and coming of age, told through the remarkable lives of young women who have redefined the meaning of family for themselves.

War and Diplomacy in Modern Japan: Prime Minister Kōki Hirota and His Times
By Ryuji Hattori. 2025
This open access book examines the life and work of Koki Hirota, who served as Japan's foreign minister and prime…
minister from 1933 to 1938 - the period that saw the final Japanese diplomatic attempts at achieving a modus vivendi with China before the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War. It looks at the failed attempts to prevent that war from evolving into a protracted conflict. Hirota's actions and inactions during this time resulted in a death sentence at the Tokyo Trials following the end of the Second World War, making him the only civilian official to meet such a fate. Hirota is seen as a martyr-like figure in Japan, but this book counters this public image by showing how, despite initially championing a cooperative relationship with China as foreign and prime minister, he continually acquiesced to the military's demands before being swept away by the rise of populist politics that followed early Japanese success in the Second Sino-Japanese War. As the first biography of Hirota to be published in English, this book provides an in-depth account of Sino-Japanese relations and Japanese diplomacy during this critical period and examines the ultimate failure of the civilian government to check the adventurism of the Japanese army. It is relevant to historians of Japan, and to those interested in diplomatic history, and the Second World War - as well as scholars working in various areas of contemporary East Asian politics.

Begründung der erfinderischen Tätigkeit: Die Verfahren vor dem DPMA, dem EPA und dem BPatG
By Thomas Heinz Meitinger. 2025
This book constitutes the proceedings of the 40th International Conference on Computers and Their Applications, CATA 2025, which took place in…
San Francisco, CA, USA, during March 17-18, 2025. The 19 papers included in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 38 submissions. They were organized in topical sections as follows: Algorithms and AI;M machine learning and data mining; and security and networking.

In the Meantime: Toward an Anthropology of the Possible
By Adeline Masquelier, Deborah Durham. 2025
The “meantime” represents the gap between what is past and the unknown future. When considered as waiting, the meantime is…
defined as a period of suspension to be endured. By contrast, the contributors of this volume understand it as a space of “the possible” where calculation coexists with uncertainty, promises with disappointment, and imminence with deferral. Attending to the temporalities of emerging rather than settled facts, they put the stress on the temporal tactics, social commitments, material connections, dispositional orientations, and affective circuits that emerge in the meantime even in the most desperate times.
