This book presents the 16th ICGS3-24 conference which aims to understand the full impact of cyber-security, AI, deepfake, and quantum…
computing on humanity. Over the last two decades, technology relating to cyber-space (satellites, drones, UAVs), cyber-security, artificial intelligence, and generative AI has evolved rapidly. Today, criminals have identified rewards from online frauds; therefore, the risks and threats of cyber-attacks have increased too. Detection of the threat is another strand to the strategy and will require dynamic risk management techniques, strong and up-to-date information governance standards, and frameworks with AI responsive approaches in order to successfully monitor and coordinate efforts between the parties. Thus, the ability to minimize the threats from cyber is an important requirement. This will be a mission-critical aspect of the strategy with development of the right cyber-security skills, knowledge, and culture that are imperative for the implementation of the cyber-strategies. As a result, the requirement for how AI Demand will influence business change and thus influence organizations and governments is becoming important. In an era of unprecedented volatile, political, and economic environment across the world, computer-based systems face ever more increasing challenges, disputes, and responsibilities while the Internet has created a global platform for the exchange of ideas, goods, and services; however, it has also created boundless opportunities for cyber-crime. The ethical and legal implications of connecting the physical and digital worlds and presenting the reality of a truly interconnected society present the realization of the concept of smart societies. Drawing on 15 years of successful events, the 16th ICGS3-24 conference aims to provide attendees with an information-packed agenda with representatives from across the industry and the globe. This Annual International Conference is an established platform in which security, safety, and sustainability issues can be examined from several global perspectives through dialogue between academics, students, government representatives, chief executives, security professionals, and research scientists from the UK and from around the globe.
This volume provides in-depth discussions on the challenges of intercultural encounters in Brazil. It analyzes existing policies related to migration…
and minorities and proposes innovative approaches to policy-making. It also highlights policies that have had a real social impact. The volume consolidates theoretical contributions from authors of different but convergent fields to indicate the role of culture and cultural processes in a wide range of phenomena such as psychosocial intervention with immigrants, emigrants, returnees and refugees, homelessness, mental health and interculturality, mobility in urban settings, monolingualism and monocultural curriculum at Brazilian schools and universities, besides narratives of new and older immigrants. Displacement is one of the 21st century's greatest challenges, and this volume provides interdisciplinary perspectives on mobility and people in cultural contact in Brazil, the largest country in South America and the fifth most populous in the world. Although seen from a Brazilian scenario, issues discussed here permeate all other countries that are diverse and receive immigrants, and shed light on the complex socio-cultural world in which we live.
Martian Aeolian Geomorphology: An Introduction
Par Chao Li, Zhibao Dong, Ping Lü. 2025
This book covers Martian Aeolian Geomorphology and is organized around three main foci. The first focus is about advancing our understanding…
of aeolian geomorphology through research on Martian aeolian landforms. Chapters 1 through 4 provide essential knowledge for understanding the aeolian geomorphology of Mars. Among them, Chapters 1 and 2 provide readers with a clear understanding of the significance, scientific status and methodology of the study of aeolian geomorphology on Mars. Chapters 3 introduces the physics of aeolian geomorphology and Chapter 4 presents an overview of Mars. Chapters 5 and 6 are devoted to the Martian atmosphere, and Martian sediments respectively, constituting the dynamic conditions and the material basis for the formation of aeolian landforms, their basic characteristics, the processes that control their formation and evolution, and comparisons with Earth. Chapters 7 and 8 discuss the geomorphological types, morphology and distribution of dunes on Mars, and extract information on the developmental environment and processes that control dune landforms. The second focus of this book concerns the unique characteristics of Martian aeolian landforms. Chapters 9 and 10 provide thorough introductions to several unique Martian aeolian landforms. The third focus is to provide a textbook for graduate students. To facilitate understanding of Martian aeolian landforms and deepen the reader’s comprehension of current aeolian geomorphological theories, we connect the characteristics of various aspects of Martian aeolian landforms with the relevant theories, and especially the classical theories that have stood the test of time. At the same time, we try to present different viewpoints and hypotheses on relevant scientific issues, leaving readers with wide room for innovative thinking. The book’s 12 chapters are ordered to start with an overview of fundamental knowledge (Chapters 1to 4), continue (Chapters 5 to 11) by describing the book’s core content, and conclude (Chapters 12 ) by relating what we believe about Mars to what we know about Earth.

Collective Irrationality (SpringerBriefs in Psychology)
Par Fathali M. Moghaddam. 2025
The goal of this book is to provide, first, a critical discussion of collective irrationality from the perspectives of different…
research traditions in psychological science and, second, introduce a forward- looking theory of collective irrationality, one that will help stimulate greater attention to this topic on the part of researching and practicing psychologists. Collective irrationality is a neglected topic in mainstream psychology. Individual irrationality has been extensively examined from different research perspectives, most recently through the lens of cognitive neuroscience, but collective irrationality continues to be ignored. This is in large part due to the reductionism of mainstream psychology, dominated as it is by the individualistic culture of the United States. However, the most serious challenges confronting humankind, including global warming and nuclear proliferation, arise out of collective irrationality, which is in a number of important ways different from individual irrationality. Thus, the neglect of collective irrationality represents an important gap that this work will help fill.
This book invites the reader to follow seemingly unrelated paths towards the same goal: making sense of what it means…
to be human in a world that casually blends discourses on nature, technology, and biology with ideas of progress, optimization and their capitalization at the centre. The author critically analyses current thinking which often looks at technological solutions to the challenges posed by climate change, and where artificial intelligence is instrumental in fulfilling the promise of ecological capitalism. He instead advocates that we take a closer look at the politics of optimization within and outside managerial perspectives, which could reveal that one of the main sources of our repeated failures related to governance and climate change lies not intrinsically in the qualities of the tools we use, but in the underlying assumptions with which we design, and in the scope of their use. Therefore, the book looks at possible solutions for humanity that may lie between the rock of technology and the hard place of nature. That is, it asks for a revision in our implicit assumptions for building our tools; critiques the thinking about our relationships with them; and re-assesses their use. Richly documented, imaginatively argued, and captivatingly written, this book explores unexpected entanglements of nature, culture, and technology that emerge in A.I.&’s unruly and unforeseen trajectories. - George Paul Meiu, Professor of Anthropology, University of Basel Balasescu develops wide-ranging thick-descriptions that provocatively draw together lotus flowers and data banks, snakes and algorithms to delve into how bodies, cultures and power are invisibly ensconced in every aspect of the digital realm. - Susan Ossman, Distinguished Professor of Anthropology, University of California Riverside This important work traces the evolution and development of the paradigms that made artificial intelligence possible and perhaps even inevitable. - Guy Nasmyth,

Plato's Second Republic: An Essay on the Laws
Par André Laks. 2022
An argument for why Plato&’s Laws can be considered his most important political dialogueIn Plato's Second Republic, André Laks argues…
that the Laws, Plato&’s last and longest dialogue, is also his most important political work, surpassing the Republic in historical relevance. Laks offers a thorough reappraisal of this less renowned text, and examines how it provides a critical foundation for the principles of lawmaking. In doing so, he makes clear the tremendous impact the Laws had not only on political philosophy, but also on modern political history.Laks shows how the four central ideas in the Laws—the corruptibility of unchecked power, the rule of law, a &“middle&” constitution, and the political necessity of legislative preambles—are articulated within an intricate and masterful literary architecture. He reveals how the work develops a theological conception of law anchored in political ideas about a god, divine reason, that is the measure of political order. Laks&’s reading opens a complex analysis of the relationships between rulers and citizens; their roles in a political system; the power of reason and persuasion, as opposed to force, in commanding obedience; and the place of freedom.Plato's Second Republic presents a sophisticated reevaluation of a philosophical work that has exerted an enormous if often hidden influence even into the present day.
A Place like No Other: Discovering the Secrets of Serengeti
Par Anthony R. Sinclair. 2021
From famed zoologist Anthony Sinclair, an account of his decades-long quest to understand one of Earth's most spectacular ecosystemsWith its…
rich biodiversity, astounding wildlife, and breathtaking animal migrations, Serengeti is like no other ecosystem on the planet. A Place like No Other is Anthony Sinclair's firsthand account of how he and other scientists discovered the biological principles that regulate life in Serengeti and how they rule all of the natural world. When Sinclair first began studying this spectacular ecosystem in 1965, a host of questions confronted him. What environmental features make its annual migration possible? What determines the size of animal populations and the stunning diversity of species? What factors enable Serengeti to endure over time? In the five decades that followed, Sinclair and others sought answers. What they learned is that seven principles of regulation govern all natural processes in the Serengeti ecosystem. Sinclair shows how these principles can help us to understand and overcome the challenges facing Serengeti today, and how they can be used to repair damaged habitats throughout the world.Blending vivid storytelling with invaluable scientific insights from Sinclair's pioneering fieldwork in Africa, A Place like No Other reveals how Serengeti holds timely lessons for the restoration and conservation of our vital ecosystems.
