Chinese Maritime Cases: Selection for Year of 2018 (Volume 3) (Chinese Maritime Cases Series)
By Martin Davies, Jiang Lin. 2025
China (the Mainland of PRC) trades with other states in trillions of USD every year, and about 95% of the…
cargoes are carried by ocean-going ships calling at hundreds of Chinese ports each singe day. Due to the enormous trade volume and shipping activities, foreign ships, companies and professionals are often caught in the Chinese maritime law and court. The foreign parties involved in Chinese litigation or dispute resolution and their lawyers are more and more enthusiastic to study Chinese maritime cases in order to deal with their own cases properly or, if possible, predicate the potential risks and avoid the disputes outright. However, to date, no Chinese series casebook has ever been published. Now, for the first time, the authors offer this series casebook of delicately selected Chinese maritime judgments. Each year, the book selects a number of leading, innovative and influential Chinese maritime judgments and presents full English translation of them, together with summary, to the readers so that they can have insights of how the Chinese maritime judges interpret, apply and develop Chinese maritime law in practice. The book will benefit the worldwide students, academics, practitioners and industrial people who may be engaged in international trade, shipping, insurance and other transactions concerning China. The book will also indemnify to certain extent the situation that there is lack of authoritative sources available to foreign personnel to look into how Chinese justice system functions and grows in real life.

The Hard Edge of Soft Power: Mega-Events, Geopolitics, and Making Nations Great Again (Mega Event Planning)
By Sven Daniel Wolfe. 2025
This open access book explores the linkages between geopolitics and hosting mega-events. It encompasses and transcends the international and domestic…
dimensions of soft power to unpack how mega-events shape cities and societies through notions of unity and greatness, but also investigates local developments beneath the Potemkin surface of the global spectacle. Drawing on a global range of case studies from Eastern Europe, Western Europe, North America, South America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia, this volume features the sensitivity of grounded local research framed within geopolitical perspectives. Together, they present an international and transdisciplinary understanding of the local and global political implications of hosting mega-events. The volume reveals what hides under the mega-event spectacle: problems that – regardless of national context – most often occur to the detriment of host populations. This is an open access book.
Internalist Virtue Epistemology: A Stoic Model
By Benjamin W. McCraw. 2025
This monograph works at the intersection of two of the most popular and growing fields in epistemology: epistemic normativity or…
value and virtue epistemology. By challenging two hitherto un- or under-explored sets of assumptions—epistemological orthodoxies—operative in those fields and, by rejecting them, the book develops novel approaches to current theories of epistemic value and virtue. The book argues that what is needed is an internalist (i.e. non-externalist) mode of epistemic virtue. To accomplish this, it draws on Stoic moral theory, whereby the deployment of virtue—no matter whether one has any &‘external&’ success—suffices for completely successful action.
The German-Soviet War: Combat, Occupation, and Legacies
By Jeff Rutherford, Robert Von Maier. 2025
The German-Soviet War revises the conflict's generally accepted understanding through case studies, demonstrating the complexity of the war at the…
local level. The contributors assembled by Jeff Rutherford and Robert von Maier examine the multiplicity of experiences of individuals caught in this savage war, starting with the German war of annihilation launched against Soviet state and society in June 1941. This detailed collection shows that the particular nature of the war in the east resulted from an intertwining of military, ideological, and economic motives. The German-Soviet War puts Germany's murderous policies toward Soviet Jews and prisoners of war, and the justification for these policies and actions within the ranks of the army, into the larger context of battlefield events. The neglected topic of the destructive German scorched-earth retreats receives detailed analysis, demonstrating the importance of ideology and economic thinking in the German army's war. The difficulty in reconciling economic and ideological considerations also played a prominent role in Soviet attempts to rebuild after the war. The German-Soviet War not only brings attention to these devastating events but also revises the general narrative of the war. By internationalizing the conflict through examinations into the various Axis and Allied nations and peoples who participated in the fighting, this volume provides new ways of conceptualizing their motivations, actions, and importance in its eventual outcome. Together, the contributions to The German-Soviet War provide new ways of examining the defining conflict of the Second World War.

Theater of the Void explores contemporary German theater in the aftermath of the technology of the atomic bomb. Informed by…
threats of total annihilation—whether through nuclear technology or, more recently, global warming—German-language theater since the late 1970s encounters the void not as empty space or nothingness but as the possibility of radical transformation. Theater of the Void investigates theatrical forms that transform fundamental categories of time, space, and causality in light of the ontological and epistemological shifts of the nuclear age. Teresa Kovacs focuses on four directors and playwrights whose works offer insights into the theater of the void: Heiner Müller, Elfriede Jelinek, Christoph Schlingensief, and René Pollesch. Kovacs shows that contemporary German theater has not turned away from the sciences after Hiroshima and Nagasaki but has remained entangled with scientific thinking about quantum physics, biology, and the environment. Investigating these entanglements, Theater of the Void finds in the works of these German theater-makers a grammar of the void that speaks to the possibilities of a transformed theater in the Anthropocene.

and value addition. The potential of minor millets in addressing food and nutritional insecurities is well-recognized. Government of India declared millets as &“Shree Anna&” as they are a powerhouse of nutrients and possess strong climate-resilience properties. Minor millet species, such as finger millet, foxtail millet, barnyard millet, little millet, proso millet, kodo millet, fonio millet, and teff, are the oldest-cultivated crops that are used for both food and fodder in semi-arid regions of Asia and Africa. In the recent times, they have become important due to their unparalleled nutritional profile, recognized nutraceutical properties, versatile environmental adaptability, and ability to flourish in low input agriculture and organic cultivation. However, their cultivation and consumption are declining due to lack of awareness and unavailability of literature to a broad range of audience. This book serves as reference material for researchers and students engaged in genetic improvement, biochemistry, processing, and value addition of minor millets.
International Organizational Anarchy: International Organizations as Full Actors in the Global Arena
By David Arellano-Gault, Laura Zamudio-González. 2025
International organizations are central actors on the global stage, yet their very existence is deeply shaped by their organizational nature.…
As entities with histories and environments, they navigate complex networks of members and stakeholders—often pursuing conflicting objectives. These organizations must operate, decide, and act amidst unforeseen events and challenges. Far from being abstract entities, international organizations embody all the complexities of organizations in the fullest sense. To survive, they must contend with anarchy: not only within the international system but also within their own structures and decision-making processes. Bridging the gap between Organization Theory and International Relations offers a promising avenue for building the concepts and case studies necessary to understand how organizational anarchy contributes to the creation of international order.

Lessons from Eviction Court: How We Can End Our Housing Crisis
By Fran Quigley. 2025
Lessons from Eviction Court goes behind the disturbing statistics of evictions and homelessness to provide the first-hand experience of a…
lawyer who is in eviction court each week, standing alongside people who are losing their homes. Fran Quigley provides a clear and emphatic prescription for how we can end evictions and homelessness in the United States, with the stories of struggling clients serving as the introduction for discussions of the reforms needed. Homelessness does not need to happen, nor do widespread evictions. They do not occur in other nations like in ours, and they did not used to not be the norm here in the US. Lessons from Eviction Court explains how we can end this national crisis.
Performing Desire: Knowledge, Self, and Other in Richard de Fournival's "Bestiaire d'amours"
By Elizabeth Eva Leach, Jonathan Morton. 2025
Performing Desire examines the intellectual and philosophical complexity of a monument of medieval literature: the mid-thirteenth-century Bestiaire d'amours of Richard…
de Fournival. Although the Bestiaire was recognized in its time as significant, as evinced by numerous surviving manuscript copies and its influence on other literary works, modern scholarship has tended to neglect it. Performing Desire remedies this omission by detailing the contributions of the Bestiaire to medieval literature and thought.Attending to the phenomenology, psychology, and philosophy of Fournival's Bestiaire, Elizabeth Eva Leach and Jonathan Morton reconsider the work as a literary experiment that explores erotic desire and the construction of a self. Leach and Morton further show that the Bestiaire is as much a meditation on sound and performance as it is a study of desire. Synthesizing methods from musicology, literary studies, and manuscript studies, Leach and Morton consider the complex and hybridized workings of text, image, sound, and cues for performance in the surviving manuscripts of the Bestiaire. Through their analysis, Leach and Morton find that the distinctive aspect of the Bestiaire's philosophical method is its self-conscious status as a performance between the oral and the literary, the voice and the page. It is this aspect, they contend, that left such a mark on the medieval European tradition of philosophical fiction. In Performing Desire, Richard de Fournival's hybrid text emerges as one of the most philosophically sophisticated and important works of medieval literature not only in French but in any language.
