This book questions the mainstream interpretation of the current political shifts as a move to ultra-conservative and even fascist politics,…

changing the polities of the Western democracies that can be overcome by “reclaiming democracy”. Instead of following this path, the present work analyses these developments as extreme consequence that emerged from the individualist and short-sighted understanding of rationality that coined the enlightenment and had been translated into an institutionalist take on democracy. Such view, while accepting the common interpretation of a dramatic and extremely dangerous development, goes further: it emphasises the need to question the pathway of modernisation: Looking at what is hidden by the eclipse of reason encourages also to look for a new societal model, asking for a real public, transcending current strives for publicity. As such, it is an important contribution to debates on precarity and a one-sided understanding of Human Rights. Scholars of political science and political philosophy will be interested in the work as it will be of interest for those who are engaging in oingoi8ng political debates.

This book is a systematic exposition of Argument Dialectics (AD). Despite its name, argument dialectics is a logical approach to…

argumentation theory. AD stands out among theories of argument because of three unusual features: it is reasons-based, holistic and particularistic. This implies that AD conceives of logic as a theory of the dialectical construction of reasons, not as a theory of inferences. Consequently, contrary to other logical approaches, AD focuses on the study of inter-argumentative relations, especially those of opposition and weighing. The book makes an extensive use of the theory of reasons, a branch of metaethics that has been a very valuable quarry of intuitions and concepts for the elaboration of a reason-based theory of argument. The oppositions generalism-particularism and atomism-holism, proposed  by Jonathan Dancy, which play a central role in the book and in the development of AD, have been adapted from the theory of reasons, and the same can be said of the distinction between different statuses of reasons that AD associates with different kinds of counterarguments. Conceiving of the theory of argument in terms of reasons has the effect of situating the paradigm of argumentation in practical argumentation/reasoning &“about what to do&” rather than in theoretical argumentation &“about what to believe&”, as inference-based theories do. Hence, this book is of interest to argumentation theorists, communication theorists, epistemologists, linguists, moral philosophers, and philosophers of law.

Subjectivity and Neonihilism examines the current Western sociopolitical climate, revealing how it shapes who we are, how we think of…

ourselves, and how we create meaning in a seemingly meaningless world. Drawing on critical theory, this book looks at some of the social inequities produced under neoliberal capitalism and the ways these problems are internalized into subjectivity as the neoliberal self. Neoliberal cultural values are shown to reframe social inequities as personal problems and simultaneously create a sense of personal responsibility for solving them within the self, rather than addressing them externally. The author argues that current crises in meaning making and mental health have been exacerbated by the neoliberal values of individualization, responsibilization, self-governance, and competition. Divided into 3 parts, this book begins by outlining the emergence of subjectivity and technologies of the self. It demonstrates how the sociopolitical conditions that amplify social inequities intwine with the hyperawareness of the internet age to create an atmosphere of meaninglessness that is pervasive on social media and in internet culture. In part 2, the author further analyses this phenomenon, here labelled &‘neonihilism&’, as the process in which we confront meaninglessness through irony, questioning whether this might hold the intrinsic condition for overcoming this new nihilism. Part 3 examines the possibility for collective meaning making, solidarity, and collective action afforded by creating an art of nihilating the neoliberal self, or what the author terms &‘the ars nihil&’, via subversion and resistance. This book offers fresh insights that will be of interest to students and scholars of critical theory, psychology, philosophy and sociology.

Demoralizing Violence

Is non-violence oppressive? This book argues that non-violent ethics keeps minoritized peoples down and helps the bourgeoisie tolerate structural injustice.…

Like sex, violence needs de-moralizing, in order to fulfil its emancipatory potential. Social injustice and global inequality will not deprive the privileged of their sleep, if radical measures are morally ruled out from the start. And the ethics of non-violence robs the working classes of one of the few mechanisms they have left to help them cope with our increasingly digitalized bureaucracies, developed around the needs of highly educated urban classes. There is not just the normative obvious point that it is not fair to deprive the oppressed of one of the only resources they have left; it is also that it isn&’t surprising that the bourgeoisie would settle on a non-violent ethics, since that happens to prop up their privileged position – while at the same time soothing their precious conscience: capital with a soul. The book defends three overall claims: first, non-violence is oppressive, in the traditional feminist sense of keeping people down; second, non-violence helps the bourgeoisie tolerate structural injustice; and thirdly, that access to violent means is not distributed fairly across gender or race, for example.

Explizit kritische Perspektiven sollen breiten Raum erhalten.

This book discusses linguistic recursion as a transversal property that runs through different fields, including language, computer science, mathematics, architecture,…

music, and art. Linguistic recursion, considered since the seminal work of Hauser, Chomsky, and Fitch (2002) the defining characteristic of human language, has no analogue or homologue in other animal communication systems. This book presents different aspects of recursion from a syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic framework. Syntax recursion is largely addressed through the different types of dependencies, most notably those hierarchically composed. The semantic and pragmatic topics are respectively discussed in relation to the theory of mind and a dialogical use of language. Although there are several texts on specific topics of recursion, this is the first that compiles its varieties, pointing out the differences, but also the interrelationships of its core aspects. The book presents recursion as a complex phenomenon related not only to language, but also to other cognitive scenarios, such as working memory, linguistic disabilities, or primitive cultures.

This book offers an extensive exploration of foundation models, guiding readers through the essential concepts and advanced topics that define…

this rapidly evolving research area. Designed for those seeking to deepen their understanding and contribute to the development of safer and more trustworthy AI technologies, the book is divided into three parts providing the fundamentals, advanced topics in foundation modes, and safety and trust in foundation models: Part I introduces the core principles of foundation models and generative AI, presents the technical background of neural networks, delves into the learning and generalization of transformers, and finishes with the intricacies of transformers and in-context learning. Part II introduces automated visual prompting techniques, prompting LLMs with privacy, memory-efficient fine-tuning methods, and shows how LLMs can be reprogrammed for time-series machine learning tasks. It explores how LLMs can be reused for speech tasks, how synthetic datasets can be used to benchmark foundation models, and elucidates machine unlearning for foundation models. Part III provides a comprehensive evaluation of the trustworthiness of LLMs, introduces jailbreak attacks and defenses for LLMs, presents safety risks when find-tuning LLMs, introduces watermarking techniques for LLMs, presents robust detection of AI-generated text, elucidates backdoor risks in diffusion models, and presents red-teaming methods for diffusion models. Mathematical notations are clearly defined and explained throughout, making this book an invaluable resource for both newcomers and seasoned researchers in the field.

This book examines Machiavelli in contemporary or past realities through the way in which he read, wrote, related to cultures…

distant in time and space—a first in the field of Machiavellian studies. It proposes and experiments with a change of perspective: in essence, it is not interested in what Machiavelli probably was, but in what Machiavelli did. In this perspective, Machiavelli remains a paradoxically still little-explored historical case. Issues and methods developed in recent decades by intellectual history, the history of reading, and cultural anthropology have remained substantially unfamiliar to Machiavelli scholars. This is a book that renews the vision of Machiavelli: no longer the starting or finishing point of intellectual genealogies that are often openly ideological, but an extraordinary case study that allows us to analyse the birth, in the sixteenth century, of a composite knowledge specifically dedicated to man in society.
