Over more than three decades, Drapeau would endeavour to transform Montreal into a world-class global city by regulating its nightlife.Montreal After Dark chronicles the spaces where nighttime regulations were enforced and contested. City authorities understood the night as enabling disorder, and they reorganized policing and crafted bylaws to gain control over it. Police and politicians mutually reinforced each other’s drive to morally cleanse the urban landscape, especially for international events like Expo 67 and the 1976 Olympics. But in an era of social unrest Drapeau’s administration also found itself responding to the protective services’ discontent. The political culture of the city was quickly transformed following terrifying nights without their services. It shows how knowledge was formed at all levels – among the bystanders attending the sites, to the medical experts who studied the visionaries, and the clerical authorities who evaluated the authenticity of the apparitions. Tine Van Osselaer examines how these different perspectives converged and influenced each other, whose authority was accepted or challenged, and how the public character of the events affected their evaluation.Apparition Fever reveals that the public setting of Marian apparitions and the religious enthusiasm they triggered are not novel challenges for the Catholic Church. On the contrary, they have heavily influenced the evaluation of apparitions since the early twentieth century.

However, as Myles Lennon argues in Subjects of the Sun, solar power is no less likely to exploit marginalized communities than dirtier forms of energy. Drawing from ethnographic research on clean energy corporations and community solar campaigns in New York City, Lennon argues that both groups overlook solar’s extractive underside because they primarily experience energy from the sun in the virtual world of the cloud. He shows how the material properties of solar technology—its shiny surfaces, decentralized spatiality, and modularity—work closely with images, digital platforms, and quantitative graphics to shape utopic visions in which renewable energy can eradicate the constitutive tensions of racial capitalism. As a corrective to this virtual world, Lennon calls for an equitable energy transition that centers the senses and sensibilities neglected by screenwork: one’s haptic care for their local environment; the full-bodied feel of infrastructural labor; and the sublime affect of the sun.

collision data at √s = 13TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, CERN, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1 and recorded between 2016 and 2018. The searches are carried out using events in which the Higgs/Z/W boson is produced in association with a leptonically-decaying Z or W boson. This thesis also discusses a novel calibration algorithm for charm jet identification that enables maximal use of the available information related to charm jets. The new method is used to correct the entire distribution expected as output when jet flavour identification algorithms are applied to jets of different flavours. The calibrated results improve over traditional efficiency measurements and help enhance the sensitivities of the Higgs, Z, and W searches. This book primarily reports on the so-called resolved-jet topology of the Higgs/Z/W boson searches, where the boson candidates are reconstructed using two separate small-radius (AK4) jets. Upon statistically combining the results of the resolved-jet search with a complementary merged-jet approach, the observed (expected) upper limit on the Higgs decay to charm quarks corresponds to 14 (7.6) times the Standard Model expectation at the 95% CL which is the most stringent direct limit to date. A significance of 5.7σ (5.9σ) over the background-only prediction is observed (expected) in case of the search for charmed Z boson decays. Only the resolved-jet topology is used in the search for charmed W decays and the observed (expected) significance is 5.6σ (5.7σ) over the background-only prediction. These mark the first observations of charmed decays of the Z and W bosons at a hadron collider experiment.

The book presents comprehensive theoretical solutions to all three problems, and uses these solutions to formulate practical algorithms. In parallel to the theoretical work, implementations of these algorithms have been developed in Magma. These form a critical component of various general algorithms in computational group theory—for example, computing character tables and solving conjugacy problems in arbitrary finite groups.
