Hercule Poirot must solve a perplexing case of midair murder in Death in the Clouds when he discovers that the…
woman in seat two of the airborne aeroplane he’s traveling on is quite unexpectedly—and unnaturally—deceased. From seat No. 9, Hercule Poirot was ideally placed to observe his fellow air passengers on the short flight from Paris to London. Over to his right sat a pretty young woman, clearly infatuated with the man opposite; ahead, in seat No. 13, sat a countess with a poorly concealed cocaine habit; across the gangway in seat No. 8, a writer of detective fiction was being troubled by an aggressive wasp. Yes, Poirot is almost ideally placed to take it all in, except what he did not yet realize was that behind him, in seat No. 2, sat the slumped, lifeless body of a woman. Murdered, and likely by someone in Poirot’s immediate proximity.

Male Femininities
By C. Winter Han, Dana Berkowitz, Elroi J. Windsor. 2023
Innovative essays that explore how men perform femininity and what femininity looks like without womenWhat counts as “male femininity”? Is…
it simply men behaving in effeminate ways or is it the absence of masculinity? Male Femininities presents a nuanced, critical collection of essays that highlight the extent to which male femininities are neither an imitation of femaleness nor an emptying of masculinity. These innovative essays focus on both gay and straight men, and transmasculine and genderqueer people in their construction and performance of femininity, thereby revealing the possibilities that open up when we critically examine femininity without women. Male Femininities asks, What does femininity look like for men?The contributors—highly regarded scholars and rising stars—cover a range of topics, including drag queens, cosmetic enhancements, trans fertility, and gender-non-conforming childhoods. Male Femininities illuminates what happens when we decouple femininity from female bodies and how even the smallest cracks and fissures in the normative order can disrupt, challenge, and in some cases reaffirm our existing sex-gender regime. This volume pluralizes the concept of male femininities and leads readers through an exploration of how gender, sex, and sexuality are manifested in the United States today.
Creativity and Sociology: Doing Social Research with and on Artistic Sources (Classical and Contemporary Social Theory)
By Mariano Longo, Matteo Jacopo Zaterini, Corrado Punzi. 2025
Creativity and Sociology: Doing Social Research with and on Artistic Sources explores the relationship between artistic and sociological narratives, considering…
the ways in which artistic narratives in their different forms can be both subjects of sociological observation and tools for the sociological analysis of reality. Thematically divided into sections that focus on “doing sociology on art” ’ and “doing sociology with art”, it observes the major forms of art – including literature, music, theatre, painting, photography, cinematography, and interactive arts such as videogames – examining each as objects and instruments of sociological analysis: as narratives that can offer new perspectives on the world. Bringing together under a single epistemological framework area of research that frequently remains separate, or beyond sociological framing, this book will appeal to scholars of sociology, social theory, and social science methodology with interests in media and artistic narratives.

The Therapeutic School Approach offers teachers and school leaders a step-by-step guide to embedding a trauma-informed approach that is tangible,…
practical, and brings the underpinning science to life in a way that is relatable and relevant. Placing a keen focus on moving towards a more inclusive way of working, it advocates for a culture that puts wellbeing and mental health at the core of teaching and school life. This whole school approach gives readers the tools needed to support children when they are dysregulated by reframing ‘difficult’ behaviour and focusing on emotional intelligence and self-regulation strategies to help children flourish in school and beyond. The book evidences the ‘why’ behind the approach, exploring childhood trauma, attachment theory and stress, and explaining how these factors are impacting children today. It then introduces the ‘how’, looking in detail at trauma-informed responses, behaviour policies, relationships, and the power of the environment. Chapters leave the reader with a wealth of practical strategies, as well a full understanding of key theory so they can champion trauma-informed approaches in their work. With real life case studies and scenarios woven throughout, this empowering book challenges perspectives, raises awareness, and inspires the reader to re-evaluate the norm to make a true difference to the children in their care. It will be essential reading for primary school teachers, head teachers, SENCOs, and support staff who want to put children’s wellbeing at the core of their practice.
Cause and Explanation in Ancient Philosophy
By Daniel Vázquez, Alberto Ross. 2024
This volume offers an updated analysis of the use, meaning, and scope of the classical notion of aitia. It clarifies…
philosophical and philological questions about aitia and offers bold and innovative interpretations of this key concept of ancient philosophy. The numerous meanings and nuances of aitia remain difficult to grasp. Ancient philosophers use aitia to explain the existence and activity of substances, bodies, souls, or gods. Paradoxically, its own definition remains difficult to establish. This book reconstructs some of the most important uses, variants, and scopes of the term aitia within different philosophical perspectives in antiquity, including early Greek philosophy, Plato, Aristotle, Stoicism, and Islamic philosophy. The chapters analyze metaphysical aspects, epistemological issues, and logical implications of aitia. They engage with the most relevant critical literature generated in several modern languages. In doing so, they offer an inclusive and overarching re-evaluation of our assumptions about causation and explanation in ancient philosophy.Cause and Explanation in Ancient Philosophy will be of interest to scholars and advanced students working on Pre-Socratic philosophy, Plato, Aristotle, Hellenistic philosophy, late antiquity, and medieval philosophy. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 International license.

Why Vulnerability Still Matters: The Politics of Disaster Risk Creation (Routledge Studies in Hazards, Disaster Risk and Climate Change)
By Greg Bankoff, Dorothea Hilhorst. 2022
We think vulnerability still matters when considering how people are put at risk from hazards and this book shows why…
in a series of thematic chapters and case studies written by eminent disaster studies scholars that deal with the politics of disaster risk creation: precarity, conflict, and climate change. The chapters highlight different aspects of vulnerability and disaster risk creation, placing the stress rightly on what causes disasters and explaining the politics of how they are created through a combination of human interference with natural processes, the social production of vulnerability, and the neglect of response capacities. Importantly, too, the book provides a platform for many of those most prominently involved in launching disaster studies as a social discipline to reflect on developments over the past 50 years and to comment on current trends. The interdisciplinary and historical perspective that this book provides will appeal to scholars and practitioners at both the national and international level seeking to study, develop, and support effective social protection strategies to prevent or mitigate the effects of hazards on vulnerable populations. It will also prove an invaluable reference work for students and all those interested in the future safety of the world we live in.

Why I Love Baseball
By Larry King, Michael Viner, Julie McCarron. 2004
Larry King was a true-blue baseball fanatic. A lifelong love affair began the night he attended a Dodgers game at…
Ebbets Field as a kid in 1940s Brooklyn. That was a simpler era in America's history, a time when tickets to a game cost fifty cents and parish priests prayed for Gil Hodges to break out of a slump. In this heartfelt valentine to America's favorite pastime, King recalls the many pleasures the game brought him for more than sixty years. During his broadcasting career, King had the opportunity to meet and interview many of the legends of his youth. Jackie Robinson, Casey Stengel, Ted Williams, Leo Durocher, Stan Musial...they're all here—plus many, many more. From the golden days when Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, and Duke Snider were all playing center field for New York teams at the same time, to the Subway Series in 2000 and the stirring first ballgame in New York after 9/11, this unique history is full of wonderful anecdotes. Friends and fellow baseball fanatics Bob Costas, Charlie Bragg, and Herb Cohen also contributed essays on their love for the game, and King discusses his favorite books, movies, and songs about the sport. This ode to baseball is a must for all fans and will be treasured by lovers of the game everywhere.

Baseball on Trial: The Origin of Baseball's Antitrust Exemption
By Nathaniel Grow. 2014
The controversial 1922 Federal Baseball Supreme Court ruling held that the "business of base ball" was not subject to the…
Sherman Antitrust Act because it did not constitute interstate commerce. In Baseball on Trial, legal scholar Nathaniel Grow defies conventional wisdom to explain why the unanimous Supreme Court opinion authored by Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, which gave rise to Major League Baseball's exemption from antitrust law, was correct given the circumstances of the time. Currently a billion dollar enterprise, professional baseball teams crisscross the country while the games are broadcast via radio, television, and internet coast to coast. The sheer scope of this activity would seem to embody the phrase "interstate commerce." Yet baseball is the only professional sport--indeed the sole industry--in the United States that currently benefits from a judicially constructed antitrust immunity. How could this be? Drawing upon recently released documents from the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Grow analyzes how the Supreme Court reached this seemingly peculiar result by tracing the Federal Baseball litigation from its roots in 1914 to its resolution in 1922, in the process uncovering significant new details about the proceedings. Grow observes that while interstate commerce was measured at the time by the exchange of tangible goods, baseball teams in the 1910s merely provided live entertainment to their fans, while radio was a fledgling technology that had little impact on the sport. The book ultimately concludes that, despite the frequent criticism of the opinion, the Supreme Court's decision was consistent with the conditions and legal climate of the early twentieth century.
