This book provides an in-depth study on the theory of fundamental rights and the legal challenges posed by new technologies,…

with a particular focus on neurotechnologies and neurorights. The book begins with an overview of the evolution of neuroscience and neurotechnology, highlighting the current challenges these advancements pose to contemporary legal frameworks. It also discusses the potential for widespread adoption of these technologies, driven by significant investments from tech companies. The first chapter delves into the development of neuroscience and neurotechnology, emphasizing the legal implications and future concerns associated with their mass adoption. It explores how these technologies are being integrated into society and the legal challenges they present. The second chapter examines the concept of neurorights, identifying the legal objects these rights aim to protect and the new risks introduced by neurotechnologies. It provides a comprehensive review of the main neurorights proposals from recent decades, with a detailed analysis of the theoretical framework proposed by Marcello Ienca and Roberto Andorno in 2017. Their proposal includes four new human rights: cognitive freedom, mental privacy, mental integrity, and psychological continuity. The final chapter analyzes the relationship between neurorights and existing constitutional protections, focusing on the protection of human dignity. It discusses the right to free development of personality, physical and psychological integrity, and privacy and data protection. The chapter draws on theories of fundamental rights from Brazilian constitutionalists to provide a thorough examination of these issues. The book offers a broad analysis of the main neurorights proposals by international researchers, comparing them with the fundamental rights recognized in the Brazilian Constitution. It aims to determine whether new fundamental rights are necessary to protect Brazilian citizens from the potential harms of neurotechnology. This study is essential for researchers in neuroethics, neurorights, and fundamental rights, providing valuable insights into the intersection of law and emerging technologies.

years. Beginning with the international movement that emerged in the 1970s, it celebrates the enduring and expanding role of historical and epistemological perspectives in shaping teaching practices. Organized into seven thematic sections, the volume examines core issues such as how historical and epistemological insights enhance understanding of mathematical concepts, interdisciplinarity as a tool for teaching, and innovative approaches to teacher training. It also delves into the use of historical problems, ancient texts, and textbooks as teaching resources, alongside an analysis of the social and political dimensions of mathematics education. Special attention is given to the impact of the "modern mathematics" reform and its legacy in rekindling interest in the history of mathematics in education. Featuring contributions from diverse geographical and historical contexts, this book is an essential resource for teachers, researchers, and anyone passionate about the rich interplay of history, epistemology, and mathematics.

Nominated as one of America&’s best-loved novels by PBS&’s The Great American Read&“I saw the pale student of unhallowed arts…

kneeling beside the thing he had put together. I saw the hideous phantasm of a man stretched out, and then, on the working of some powerful engine, show signs of life and stir with an uneasy, half-vital motion.&” A summer evening&’s ghost stories, lonely insomnia in a moonlit Alpine room, and a runaway imagination—fired by philosophical discussions with Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelly about science, galvanism, and the origins of life—conspired to produce for Mary Shelley this haunting night specter. By morning it had become the germ of her Romantic masterpiece, Frankenstein. Written in 1816, when she was only nineteen, Mary Shelley&’s novel of &“The Modern Prometheus&” chillingly dramatized the dangerous potential of life begotten upon a laboratory table. A frightening creation myth for our own time, Frankenstein remains one of the greatest horror stories ever written and is an undisputed classic of its kind.

The #1 New York Times and global bestseller from Walter Isaacson—the acclaimed author of Steve Jobs, Einstein: His Life and…

World, Benjamin Franklin, and Leonardo da Vinci—is the astonishingly intimate story of the most fascinating, controversial innovator of modern times. For two years, Isaacson shadowed Elon Musk as he executed his vision for electric vehicles at Tesla, space exploration with SpaceX, the AI revolution, and the takeover of Twitter and its conversion to X. The result is the definitive portrait of the mercurial pioneer that offers clues to his political instincts, future ambitions, and overall worldview. When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist. His father&’s impact on his psyche would linger. He developed into a tough yet vulnerable man-child, prone to abrupt Jekyll-and-Hyde mood swings, with an exceedingly high tolerance for risk, a craving for drama, an epic sense of mission, and a maniacal intensity that was callous and at times destructive. At the beginning of 2022—after a year marked by SpaceX launching thirty-one rockets into orbit, Tesla selling a million cars, and him becoming the richest man on earth—Musk spoke ruefully about his compulsion to stir up dramas. &“I need to shift my mindset away from being in crisis mode, which it has been for about fourteen years now, or arguably most of my life,&” he said. It was a wistful comment, not a New Year&’s resolution. Even as he said it, he was secretly buying up shares of Twitter, the world&’s ultimate playground. Over the years, whenever he was in a dark place, his mind went back to being bullied on the playground. Now he had the chance to own the playground. For two years, Isaacson shadowed Musk, attended his meetings, walked his factories with him, and spent hours interviewing him, his family, friends, coworkers, and adversaries. The result is the revealing inside story, filled with amazing tales of triumphs and turmoil, that addresses the question: are the demons that drive Musk also what it takes to drive innovation and progress?

Dr. Jampolsky believes there is another way of looking at life that makes it possible for us to walk through…

this world in love, at peace and without fear. This other way requires no external battles, but only that we heal ourselves. It is a process he calls “attitudinal healing,” because it is an internal and primarily mental process. Jampolsky believes that attitudinal healing, when properly practiced, will allow anyone, regardless of her circumstances, to begin experiencing the joy and harmony that each moment holds, and to start her journey on a path of love and hope. The mind can be retrained. Within this fact lies our freedom. Our attitudes determine whether we experience peace or fear, whether we are well or sick, free or imprisoned. Love, in its true meaning, is the attitude that this book is about. Love is total acceptance and total giving—with no boundaries and no exceptions. Love, being the only reality, cannot be transformed. It can only extend and expand. It unfolds endlessly and beautifully upon itself. Love sees everyone as blameless, for it recognizes the light within each one of us is. Love is the total absence of fear and the basis for all attitudinal healing. The principles of attitudinal healing have been expanded since Teach Only Love was first published in 1983. There are now twelve principles, which are used in the 150 Centers for Attitudinal Healing around the world. Dr. Jampolsky believes that these principles have a universal appeal that crosses cultural and religious barriers. He has repeatedly seen how people’s lives have transformed when these principles became their heartbeat and their way of communicating with others.

Hollywood Wives meets A Visit from the Goon Squad in this captivating Hollywood drama, an &“utterly alive, dazzlingly brilliant, and…

so true-to-life&” (Andrew Lipstein, author of Last Resort) emotional debut novel unraveling the secrets, struggles, and fierce rivalries of actresses navigating celebrity culture, complex careers, and personal truths during a high-stakes award season. As Hollywood prepares for its most glamorous evening, five actresses compete to see who will claim the top prize.Adria, a dignified and highly regarded grand dame of the movie industry, is intent on cementing her legacy as one of the greatest thespians of all time, even as the younger generation creeps up quickly behind her. Bitty must keep a nervous breakdown—and an increasingly debilitating alcohol addiction—at bay, as she searches for genuine closeness in an unforgiving landscape. Contessa, a former child star, is determined to make the world, and her leading man, take her seriously. Davina attempts to find her footing in superficial Los Angeles, a far cry from her roots as a serious London stage actress. And Jenny—always the underdog to her rival, Adria—sees this award season as her personal redemption, a chance to atone for past mistakes and make up for missed opportunities. With humor, wit, and an insider&’s insight, The Talent peels back the layers of women who are in the business of being perceived. And while they work to push their careers forward and maintain the public&’s goodwill, all five are forced to control truths about themselves that they would rather ignore: Could Adria and Jenny have been a team all these years, rather than bitter enemies? Is it their responsibility to offer a lifeline to poor Bitty, who is clearly teetering on the edge? Should Contessa and Davina dim their own rising stars to make those around them more comfortable? What do women in the spotlight owe to each other, and themselves?

Published by Amistad in collaboration with Lavette Books. It Ain’t Math, it’s MISSION powered by INTUITION.Intuition is like the “endocrine system” of authenticity and purpose. Most of us don’t know its full function until it malfunctions, and every part of your existence that depends on it goes into dysfunction. At that point, every part of your anatomy (humanity) becomes compromised until the system can move into repair and recovery, which is a complex and intrusive restoration journey that will scare you just enough to never “not mind” your intuition ever again. At its apex, you move forward in ways that are generally accepted as good, bad, and most importantly, less-worse.“I’m Highly Percent Sure,” invites your curiosity to my co-existence with intuition, sometimes with foresight but oftentimes, without. You don’t have to agree to engage, but if you aren’t engaging, please only occupy the periphery as seating is reserved for those who intend to #TakeNotesDoItBetter. There is limited space for those who only intend to spectate.#IYKYKOnward!

In January 1961, following eighteen months of litigation that culminated in a federal court order, Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter…

became the first black students to enter the University of Georgia. Calvin Trillin, then a reporter for Time Magazine, attended the court fight that led to the admission of Holmes and Hunter and covered their first week at the university--a week that began in relative calm, moved on to a riot and the suspension of the two students "for their own safety," and ended with both returning to the campus under a new court order. Shortly before their graduation in 1963, Trillin came back to Georgia to determine what their college lives had been like. He interviewed not only Holmes and Hunter but also their families, friends, and fellow students, professors, and university administrators. The result was this book--a sharply detailed portrait of how these two young people faced coldness, hostility, and occasional understanding on a southern campus in the midst of a great social change.
