This book proposes to go beyond that duality by focusing on a usually neglected group of states: latent nuclear countries. Those are the countries that possess advanced nuclear capabilities but no weapons. This book shows that latent nuclear countries not only participate actively in non-proliferation institutions but also promote the creation of new frameworks highlighting concerns and perspectives different from their nuclear-weapon and nuclear-free counterparts. The author makes this argument through an intricate combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, with an in-depth analysis of Brazil and Germany as sources for case studies. He makes the case to understand the nuclear non-proliferation regime as an inclusive and refined approach that takes into consideration countries’ nuclear capabilities, identities, role conceptions, and domestic structures.

growing field. There have been multiple recent manuscripts and reviews on this topic although each of these only includes certain aspects of precision medicine in ILD, broken down in different ways. It is thus the aim of this book to aggregate this information into a single volume. The first chapter broadly defines precision medicine. This introduces and defines various areas of precision medicine to set the reader up for understanding what is discussed at a higher level for the remainder of the book. The chapter ends with a glossary of relevant terms for quick reference while readers work through the remainder of the book. The second chapter highlights successes and obstacles in using and implementing precision medicine in other lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis and lung cancer. The next section focuses on how information that is currently available can be thought of as contributing to precision medicine. For instance, how a provider might think of and weigh peripheral monocytosis on a CBC, how race and ethnicity might influence diagnosis and prognosis, and how environmental influences such as air pollution or occupational exposures may interact with genetics leading to increased risk for disease and/or poor outcomes in ILD. One chapter in this section discusses using precision medicine for screening family members for ILD and how knowing results of a patient&’s family member&’s testing or their clinical course may or may not be useful. Additionally, authors explore how technology is contributing to and influencing ILD diagnosis and treatment. This includes machine learning and AI, particularly in radiology, big data, and more specific patient reported outcomes gathered via apps and devices. Finally, expert authors highlight the importance of considering economics and equity in precision medicine as some of the above approaches are at this point quite costly to develop and employ and look to what future developments and research are on the horizon. This is an ideal guide for practicing pulmonary and critical care physicians, those with expertise in interstitial lung diseases as well as general pulmonologists.

By incorporating agricultural transformation and rural-urban migration dynamics, it presents a theoretical analysis of the determinants of wage inequality between skilled and unskilled labor from multiple perspectives. Over the past few decades, industrialization and urbanization have progressed in parallel, driving the modernization of the agricultural sector. Traditional development economics often conceptualizes agricultural modernization within the context of large-scale operations, assuming that traditional agriculture can directly adopt modern non-agricultural intermediate inputs after some transformations. However, small-scale agriculture—the dominant form in developing countries—follows a distinct modernization path. This divergence manifests in two key ways. First, labor substitution and migration. The introduction of modern intermediate non-agricultural inputs tends to displace agricultural labor, accelerating rural-urban migration. Second, the role of the agricultural producer service sector: Due to the prevalence of small-scale operations, an intermediary sector—the agricultural producer service sector—emerges to facilitate the modernization process. These differences significantly influence intersectoral labor allocation and wage inequality. Given that agricultural modernization, policy shifts, and socioeconomic changes concurrently affect labor allocation, it is crucial to analyze how these exogenous factors shape wage disparities in the presence of agricultural transformation. To model this process, the book establishes a two-layer vertical production structure: non-agricultural goods are partially utilized by the agricultural producer service sector, which then produces intermediate inputs that substitute for agricultural labor. The study focuses on three major factors that profoundly impact rural labor migration and wage inequality: pro-rural policies(mitigation labor market distortion, raising rural public infrastructure, increased agricultural subsidies), FDI and internal remittances, and technological progress (green technological progress and skill-biased technical change). The findings offer novel insights into wage inequality in developing economies and provide a theoretical foundation for formulating development policies.

how racial preferences have done more harm than good for black Americans After the Supreme Court ruled in 2023 that the use of race in college admissions was unconstitutional, many predicted that the black middle class was doomed. One byproduct of a half century of affirmative action is that it has given people the impression that blacks can&’t advance without special treatment. In The Affirmative Action Myth, Jason L. Riley details the neglected history of black achievement without government intervention. Using empirical data, Riley shows how black families lifted themselves out of poverty prior to the racial preference policies of the 1960s and 1970s. Black incomes, homeownership, and educational attainment were all on the rise in the first two-thirds of the twentieth century and began to stagnate only after affirmative action became the law of the land, tainting black achievement with suspicions of unfair advantage. Countering thinkers who blame white supremacy and systemic racism for today&’s racial gaps, Riley offers a more optimistic story of black success without racial favoritism.

film in Brazil, this book focuses on how movies in this genre represent masculinity and how their messages connect to twenty-first-century sociopolitical issues. Jeremy Lehnen argues that these films promote an agenda in support of the nation’s recent swing toward authoritarianism that culminated in the 2018 election of far-right president Jair Bolsonaro. Lehnen examines the integral role of masculinity in several archetypal crime films, most of which foreground urban violence, including Cidade de Deus, Quase Dois Irmãos, Tropa de Elite, O Homem do Ano, and O Doutrinador. Within these films, Lehnen finds representations that criminalize the poor, marginalized male; emasculate the civilian middle-class male intellectual, casting him as unable to respond to crime; and portray state security as the only power able to stem increasing crime rates. Drawing on insights from masculinity studies, Lehnen contends that Brazilian crime films are ideologically charged mediums that assert and normalize the presence of the neo-authoritarian male within society. This book demonstrates how gendered scripts can become widely accepted by audiences and contribute to very real power structures beyond the sphere of cinema.
