In the course of evolution, insects have developed an almost unbelievable variety of shapes and functional sophistication. The design of…

their exoskeleton is so imaginative and unusual, often even bizarre, that one can only marvel. The fact that insects can find design solutions for any problem, no matter how special, makes them extremely successful. They have thus become crucial links in the complex networks of nature. Impressive macro photographs and informative scanning electron-optical images provide an insight into the wealth of forms, beauty and function of the six-legged creatures. Fascinating texts accompany the pictures and explain, among other things, how the great diving beetle uses vertebrate hormones as knock-out drops when attacked by fish, the pine moth beetle locates distant forest fires, the bombardier beetle emits pulsed explosions with its firing apparatus or the blue butterfly caterpillar glamours ants. Insects play a crucial role in the ecosystems of our planet. Man-made environmental destruction is interfering with these cycles in a sensitive way. This endangers the survival of insects, with dramatic consequences for us humans as well.

This book deals with a question that decisively influences and drives companies, regulators, banks, and investors in the 21st century.…

What significance do changes in social discourse and the relationship with social stakeholders have concerning the legitimacy and success of companies? Stakeholder expectations and more strictly defined sustainability regulations require companies to address the social domain and become more transparent and professional in sustainability reporting. Based on an empirical analysis over different industries, the author shows that social stakeholder orientation and topic salience does not only affect sustainability, but also financial performance metrics. Findings that should evoke a more strategic understanding of sustainability disclosure and corporate legitimacy.

This Palgrave Pivot is immensely relevant to current policy debates on poverty, welfare policy, monetary policy, and the impact of…

automation. Geoff Crocker offers a radical re-interpretation of economic theory, specifically of income, money, and technology.   The book explores alternative economic paradigms, focusing on the urgent need to get adequate income to all households, whilst reducing national debt. Technology is essential for the understanding of economic outcomes, since consumption, production, employment, distribution, and transactions all shift radically with technological change. Major policy proposals include hybrid welfare schemes with reduced conditionality, an element of universal income, and a proposal for direct money financing of government expenditure, all without stoking inflation.   This book will appeal to economists, policy analysts, economic journalists, and others who are interested in radical restructuring of the economy.

This contributed volume covers recent advancements in the development of climate-resilient agriculturally important crops by focusing on climate change, crop…

cultivation, crop breeding, and the application of novel biotechnological approaches in line with attaining second Sustainable Development Goal of zero hunger. Climate-smart agriculture is a concept aimed at transforming and reorienting agricultural production systems to ensure food security in the ever-evolving situation of climate change. Widespread alterations in rainfall and temperature patterns have threatened agricultural production and elevated the vulnerability of human dependency on agriculture for food, feed, and fiber. Additionally, global food demand is estimated to increase to feed the estimated global population of 9.7 billion by the year 2050. Climate change, food, and nutritional insecurity pose the greatest challenges for the farming community, researchers, the private sector, civil society, and policymakers to develop more sustainable solutions ensuring food security, plant adaptability, and the mitigation of adverse effects on sustainable food production systems. This book will cover three pillars defined by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for climate-smart agriculture: sustainable increase in agricultural production, adaptation, and plant resilience under climate change, and mitigation of environmental degradation through intensive agricultural practices. Furthermore, the book also highlights technological innovations taking place across different disciplines of agriculture to cater to both biotic and abiotic factors in agronomically important crops. This book serves as a useful resource documenting all recent developments made to achieve sustainable crop production. It is an interesting read for master&’s and doctoral-level students, academics, scientists, and researchers in the field of agronomy and agricultural biotechnology.

What role does coercion play in women’s involvement in crime? This is the first book to explore coercion as a…

pathway into crime for co-offending women. Using newspaper articles and case and court files, it analyses four cases of women co-accused of a crime with their partner who suggested that coercive techniques had influenced their involvement in the offending. Based on a feminist perspective, it highlights the importance of gender role expectations and gendered discourses in how the trials were conducted, and the ways in which the media framed the trials (and the women). Considering the legal and social construction of coercion, this fascinating book concludes by exploring the implications for public understanding of coercion and female offending more broadly.

After a meteoric rise, China's once inexorable growth has come to a screeching halt. With it ends China's dream of…

establishing a new tianxia (‘harmonious order’) in Asia with China at its centre. Salvatore Babones provides an up-to-date assessment of China's economic problems and how they are undermining China's challenge to the Western-dominated world order. As China's neighbours and many of its own most talented people look to the United States to ensure their security and prosperity, global power is slowly but surely consolidating in a twenty-first century American Tianxia. A closely argued antidote to defeatist accounts of Western decline, this book tells the story of how liberal individualism has become the leitmotif of the American Tianxia, an emerging world-system in which people of all nationalities seek a share in the economic, cultural, and political system that is America writ large.

It is well known that the social definition of individuals and ethnic groups helps legitimize how they are addressed by…

law enforcement. The philosophy of the social construction of crime and criminal behaviour reflects how individuals, such as police officers, construct meaning from the perspective from which they emerge, which in turn influences their law enforcement outlook. In the field, this is generally viewed through a positivist frame of reference which fails to critically examine assumptions of approach and practice. Written by an international specialist in this area, this is the first book which attempts to situate the social construction of crime and criminal behaviour within the philosophical context of phenomenology and how these constructions help inform, and ultimately justify, the policies employed to address them. Challenging existing thinking, this is essential reading for academics and students interested in social theory and theories of criminology.

This book examines the challenges in delivering a participatory planning agenda in the face of an increasingly neoliberalised planning system…

and charts the experience of Planning Aid England. In an age of austerity, government spending cuts, privatisation and rising inequalities, the need to support and include the most vulnerable in society is more acute than ever. However, forms of Advocacy Planning, the progressive concept championed for this purpose since the 1960s, is under threat from neoliberalisation. Rather than abandoning advocacy, the book asserts that only through sustained critical engagement will issues of exclusion be positively tackled and addressed. The authors propose neo-advocacy planning as the critical lens through which to effect positive change. This, they argue, will need to draw on a co-production model maintained through a well-resourced special purpose organisation set up to mobilise and resource planning intermediaries whose role it is to activate, support and educate those without the resources to secure such advocacy themselves.

This book examines the evolving relationship between multiculturalism, religion and diversity in Western Europe, proposing a shift towards a post-multicultural…

approach to address religious and secular pluralism. The author responds to criticisms of multiculturalism's approach to public religion, including perceived group reification and limited focus on intra-group domination, gender and sexuality equalities. Through a critical dialogue between multicultural theory and political theology, the book offers an original framework for post-multicultural recognition. Enriching multiculturalism by integrating religious reason and institutional pluralism, this book contributes crucial new insights to debates on religion, equality and diversity in public life.

of pregnancy and maternity care within the broader context of gendered and racialised discourses and policies around health, reproduction and citizenship, austerity and an expanding border regime. Based on interviews and focus groups with migrant mothers, third sector workers and NHS staff, it explores how immigration policies impact reproductive practices and unevenly distribute access to essential resources and support. The book provides valuable insights into the underlying social causes behind migrant women’s relatively poor maternal outcomes and contributes significantly to scholarship on the intersections of citizenship, reproduction and expanding border controls.

. . . But be careful: this year the murders aren’t just on the pageAuthor Jane Hepburn is determined to make her time at the Killer Lines festival worthwhile. The haunting final chapter of the modern classic Vita Nostra trilogy. The Dyachenkos’ magical dark academia novel brings the story…

of Sasha to a revelatory climax as she learns to take control of her powers and reshape the world...or destroy it forever. Beautifully translated from Russian by Julia Meitov Hersey. The Institute of Special Technologies teaches students just one thing: the magic that allows them to become parts of speech, and in doing so, transforming into a specific piece of grammar (a verb, or an adjective, or an article) so they will be able to shape the world around them. As the new provost, though, Sasha is facing an enormous problem: the students in the world she just created, her “world without fear,” are unable to master the curriculum. Whether it’s the magic or the natural order of things, what they need to learn and become—Speech—is the basis of the material world. And if she can’t teach it, Sasha knows that matter will soon cease to exist. To protect the world, Sasha must collect fragments of her former reality. Only three people carry these fragments within themselves: her younger brother, Valya, and the Grigoriev twins, Arthur and Pashka, the sons of her former lover, Yaroslav Grigoriev. Sasha must lure these three to the Institute and make them learn—and understand—at any cost. But she knows how difficult the path is, even more so from the other side of the teacher’s desk. Forced to act ever more ruthlessly, Sasha also notices the faster the world around the Institute changes. It is a vicious circle. And one she must break. To do so, she will have to shape reality again, one in which communication doesn’t break down and Speech once again needs to evolve and grow and flourish.Sasha has already given up so much in pursuit of this dream—often her nightmare—and she might be asked to make one more sacrifice so that the world and Speech might live on.
