growing field. There have been multiple recent manuscripts and reviews on this topic although each of these only includes certain aspects of precision medicine in ILD, broken down in different ways. It is thus the aim of this book to aggregate this information into a single volume. The first chapter broadly defines precision medicine. This introduces and defines various areas of precision medicine to set the reader up for understanding what is discussed at a higher level for the remainder of the book. The chapter ends with a glossary of relevant terms for quick reference while readers work through the remainder of the book. The second chapter highlights successes and obstacles in using and implementing precision medicine in other lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis and lung cancer. The next section focuses on how information that is currently available can be thought of as contributing to precision medicine. For instance, how a provider might think of and weigh peripheral monocytosis on a CBC, how race and ethnicity might influence diagnosis and prognosis, and how environmental influences such as air pollution or occupational exposures may interact with genetics leading to increased risk for disease and/or poor outcomes in ILD. One chapter in this section discusses using precision medicine for screening family members for ILD and how knowing results of a patient&’s family member&’s testing or their clinical course may or may not be useful. Additionally, authors explore how technology is contributing to and influencing ILD diagnosis and treatment. This includes machine learning and AI, particularly in radiology, big data, and more specific patient reported outcomes gathered via apps and devices. Finally, expert authors highlight the importance of considering economics and equity in precision medicine as some of the above approaches are at this point quite costly to develop and employ and look to what future developments and research are on the horizon. This is an ideal guide for practicing pulmonary and critical care physicians, those with expertise in interstitial lung diseases as well as general pulmonologists.

Rather, nonlinear investing should rely on both fundamental insights and quantitative analysis: the former ensures that similar nonlinear patterns will occur in the future and the latter validates the nonlinear pattern with historical data. In this way, quant marries fundamental: a quantamental approach! The book provides a systematic guide to conducting nonlinear investing through quantamental analysis. The author demonstrates how nonlinear investment strategies, achieving both depth and breadth, add significant value to portfolio performance for different asset classes. By incorporating agricultural transformation and rural-urban migration dynamics, it presents a theoretical analysis of the determinants of wage inequality between skilled and unskilled labor from multiple perspectives. Over the past few decades, industrialization and urbanization have progressed in parallel, driving the modernization of the agricultural sector. Traditional development economics often conceptualizes agricultural modernization within the context of large-scale operations, assuming that traditional agriculture can directly adopt modern non-agricultural intermediate inputs after some transformations. However, small-scale agriculture—the dominant form in developing countries—follows a distinct modernization path. This divergence manifests in two key ways. First, labor substitution and migration. The introduction of modern intermediate non-agricultural inputs tends to displace agricultural labor, accelerating rural-urban migration. Second, the role of the agricultural producer service sector: Due to the prevalence of small-scale operations, an intermediary sector—the agricultural producer service sector—emerges to facilitate the modernization process. These differences significantly influence intersectoral labor allocation and wage inequality. Given that agricultural modernization, policy shifts, and socioeconomic changes concurrently affect labor allocation, it is crucial to analyze how these exogenous factors shape wage disparities in the presence of agricultural transformation. To model this process, the book establishes a two-layer vertical production structure: non-agricultural goods are partially utilized by the agricultural producer service sector, which then produces intermediate inputs that substitute for agricultural labor. The study focuses on three major factors that profoundly impact rural labor migration and wage inequality: pro-rural policies(mitigation labor market distortion, raising rural public infrastructure, increased agricultural subsidies), FDI and internal remittances, and technological progress (green technological progress and skill-biased technical change). The findings offer novel insights into wage inequality in developing economies and provide a theoretical foundation for formulating development policies.

One byproduct of a half century of affirmative action is that it has given people the impression that blacks can&’t advance without special treatment. In The Affirmative Action Myth, Jason L. Riley details the neglected history of black achievement without government intervention. Using empirical data, Riley shows how black families lifted themselves out of poverty prior to the racial preference policies of the 1960s and 1970s. Black incomes, homeownership, and educational attainment were all on the rise in the first two-thirds of the twentieth century and began to stagnate only after affirmative action became the law of the land, tainting black achievement with suspicions of unfair advantage. Countering thinkers who blame white supremacy and systemic racism for today&’s racial gaps, Riley offers a more optimistic story of black success without racial favoritism.

Jeremy Lehnen argues that these films promote an agenda in support of the nation’s recent swing toward authoritarianism that culminated in the 2018 election of far-right president Jair Bolsonaro. Lehnen examines the integral role of masculinity in several archetypal crime films, most of which foreground urban violence, including Cidade de Deus, Quase Dois Irmãos, Tropa de Elite, O Homem do Ano, and O Doutrinador. Within these films, Lehnen finds representations that criminalize the poor, marginalized male; emasculate the civilian middle-class male intellectual, casting him as unable to respond to crime; and portray state security as the only power able to stem increasing crime rates. Drawing on insights from masculinity studies, Lehnen contends that Brazilian crime films are ideologically charged mediums that assert and normalize the presence of the neo-authoritarian male within society. This book demonstrates how gendered scripts can become widely accepted by audiences and contribute to very real power structures beyond the sphere of cinema. Written off as a species destined for extinction, the whooping crane has made a slow but unbelievable comeback over the last seven decades.This recovery would have been impossible if not for the efforts of Robert Porter Allen, an ornithologist with the National Audubon Society, whose courageous eight-year crusade to find the only remaining whooping crane nesting site in North America garnered nationwide media coverage. His search and his impassioned lectures about overdevelopment, habitat loss, and unregulated hunting triggered a media blitz that had thousands of citizens on the lookout for the birds during their migratory trips.Allen's tireless efforts changed the course of U.S. environmental history and helped lead to the passage of the Endangered Species Act in 1973. Though few people remember him today, his life reads like an Indiana Jones story, full of danger and adventure, failure and success. His amazing story deserves to be told.

Although this national park is most often portrayed as a triumph of wilderness preservation, Margaret Lynn Brown concludes that the largest forested region in the eastern United States is actually a re-created wilderness—a product of restoration and even manipulation of the land. Several hundred years before white settlement, Cherokees farmed and hunted this land. Between 1910 and 1920, corporate lumbermen built railroads into the region’s most remote watersheds and removed more than 60 percent of the old-growth forest. Despite this level of human impact, those who promoted the establishment of a national park in 1934 represented the land as an untouched wilderness and described the people living there as pioneers. Toward the end of the twentieth century, Brown writes, the Smokies faced the consequences of decades of management decisions that fluctuated between promoting human tourism and ensuring environmental preservation. Nearly 25 years after the book’s first publication, this revised edition discusses current research, citizen science initiatives, and land management practices that are restoring native plants and wildlife populations in the twenty-first century.
