I ett desperat försök att förstå allt och hantera den kommande skilsmässan, så finner han sig själv på en strand där han av en händelse träffar en för honom okänd kvinna som heter Astrid. De börjar prata och deras konversation blir en analys av livet där Astrid hjälper honom att identifiera problemen och visa honom vägen till lyckan som hela tiden funnits rakt framför honom. De sista kapitlen i boken erbjuder en oväntad vändning, och visar hur ödet ingriper.
