Commencing with the foundation of the Royal Institute for the Young Blind in Paris (1786), it describes the constant battle to improve conditions for the blind, Braille's encouragement by Dr. Pignier (Director of the Institute) against opposition for the use of a "special alphabet" for the blind, and the gradual acceptance of the 'six-dot-system" which came only after Braille's tragic death at the age of forty-three.
