We Breed Lions: Confronting Canada's Troubled Hockey Culture

By Rick Westhead. 2025

DAISY audio (Direct to player), DAISY audio (Zip)
Sports and games, Hockey, Social issues, Biography, Canadian authors (Non-fiction)
Human-narrated audio

A hard-hitting and powerful look at hockey's moment of reckoning in Canada, and the ways in which a game that…

is so universally loved has been rocked in recent years by court cases involving sexual assault and startling incidents of hazing and abuse throughout junior hockey. The allegations read like a scene out of a horror movie.Five National Hockey League players, all of them 18 to 20-year-old Canada World Juniors at the time, were alleged to have sexually assaulted a young woman in a London, Ontario, hotel room in June 2018 over several hours. When the players learned that the alleged victim had reported the incident to the police, they allegedly coerced her to drop the complaint and colluded to make sure their stories lined up. Hockey Canada kept the details of the case out of the spotlight and came to a confidential financial settlement with the plaintiff, paid out of a secret slush fund worth millions of dollars that the organization kept on hand to settle such complaints quietly. On May 26, 2022, TSN investigative reporter Rick Westhead broke the story surrounding the Team Canada junior players and Hockey Canada's handling of the case, immediately sending shock waves throughout all levels of the hockey world. Charges of sexual assault were made against the players; all of whom entered pleas of not guilty. Once the story went live on the TSN website, Westhead's inbox on X filled with messages from people who wanted to share their personal stories on how they had been impacted by hockey's toxic culture. For over three years the story ignited an enormous amount of debate and discussion across the country. Even after the players were acquitted of all charges in July, 2025, the conversation about how broken the national game had become only intensified. In We Breed Lions, award-winning journalist and bestselling author Rick Westhead does a deep-dive into the state of hockey in Canada today. He gives voice to those who have been sexually assaulted by hockey players, revealing the struggles they've had with local police officials in their efforts to seek justice. He also goes inside the dressing room to find out how attitudes of misogyny and homophobia continue to flourish, and speaks to former players who were forced to perform degrading acts of initiation in order to "be one of the guys."Looming large in Westhead's extraordinary reporting are the gatekeepers of the game—league officials, team owners and members of the sport's governing bodies—who are reluctant to impose change from the outside and willing to sacrifice the well-being of their players and the community for profit.Westhead offers hope for hockey's future, profiling those individuals and organizations who are committed to educating players around issues of consent, putting an end to hazing and redefining what it means to be a man on and off the ice. Featuring a Foreword by bestselling author Stephen Brunt, We Breed Lions is must-reading for parents, players and all of those who love the game of hockey and want to see it get to a better place.

A powerful exploration of the financial realities women face as they age - and the resilience, reinvention, and relationships that…

sustain them. Women are living longer than ever, but for many, those extra years come with financial uncertainty. This book tells the stories of women who, after raising children, managing households, and working in fulfilling careers, find themselves now alone and surviving on the edge. A national housing crisis hits harder when the gender pension gap leaves women with significantly less retirement income than men, but this crisis isn't inevitable. A CEO, a legal scholar, and a feminist economist offer essential advice on careers, pensions, and relationships, while the voice of a young writer from Lainey Gossip reveals why financial independence is non-negotiable. This book looks at how women can embrace this new longevity with strength and purpose. A wake-up call for women of all ages, it is an inspiring testament to the lasting social and economic contributions of women. The astonishing lives of older women are not defined by money or men. They are defined by resilience, purpose, desire, and the unbreakable bonds of female friendship.

The age of extraction: How tech platforms conquered the economy and threaten our future prosperity

By Tim Wu. 2025

Laws and statutes, Science and technology, Economics, Politics and government, Business and economics, Canadian authors (Non-fiction)
Human-narrated audio

Tech platforms manipulate attention, extract wealth, and deepen inequality. In this new book, Tim Wu ( The Attention Merchants )…

explains how we can reclaim control and create a balanced economy that works for everyone. "The magic of Tim Wu's The Age of Extraction is its simplicity. Wu deftly breaks down one of the greatest challenges of our age-the unaccountable power of tech platforms-into such digestible pieces that the solutions for what to do become dead obvious. Essential reading."-Karen Hao, author of Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman's OpenAI "It's not just in your head-your online life is draining your wallet.... [ The Age of Extraction is] a sharp and eye-opening introduction to how we arrived at platform capitalism-where no good click goes unmonetized."- Kirkus Reviews Our world is dominated by a handful of tech platforms. They provide great conveniences and entertainment, but also stand as some of the most effective instruments of wealth extraction ever invented, seizing immense amounts of money, data, and attention from all of us. An economy driven by digital platforms and AI influence offers the potential to enrich us, and also threatens to marginalize entire industries, widen the wealth gap, and foster a two-class nation. As technology evolves and our markets adapt, can society cultivate a better life for everyone? Is it possible to balance economic growth and egalitarianism, or are we too far gone? Tim Wu-the preeminent scholar and former White House official who coined the phrase "net neutrality"-explores the rise of platform power and details the risks and rewards of working within such systems. The Age of Extraction tells the story of an Internet that promised widespread wealth and democracy in the 1990s and 2000s, only to create new economic classes and aid the spread of autocracy instead. Wu frames our current moment with lessons from recent history-from generative AI and predictive social data to the antimonopoly and crypto movements-and envisions a future where technological advances can serve the greatest possible good. Concise and hopeful, The Age of Extraction offers consequential proposals for taking back control in order to achieve a better economic balance and prosperity for all.

Human-narrated audio

Award-winning journalist Jesse Winter takes us on a dangerous and often heroic journey to the frontlines of three Canadian wildfires,…

introducing readers to firefighters, volunteers and others who are facing the country's most devastating infernos In Wild Fire , Jesse Winter takes readers on a dramatic and riveting journey to the frontlines of some of Canada's most devastating blazes. Weaving together incredible stories of everyday courage, danger and disaster, Winter offers a unique view into our current peril-sharing invaluable insight from those who've faced down Canada's hungriest infernos. Across British Columbia, he encounters terrifying close calls and unbelievable bravery. In Jasper, he meets the tireless volunteer firefighters who answer the town's urgent call for help. And, in the Far North, he hears from residents who band together as the fires blaze closer and closer. At each site, he also confronts a system buckling under the pressure of previously unimaginable fire. Since 2020, wildfires have, on average, burned through five times more square kilometres than they did in the 1970s-destroying an area twice the size of Vancouver Island every summer. As Winter journeys to the country's most fire-prone areas, he asks what we're getting right and also examines what we're getting perilously wrong. From there, he makes the compelling case that if Canada wants to survive its inevitably hot future, it needs to take the hard-won lessons of such local communities to heart. The end result is an account that feels immediate and intimate, urgent and hopeful.

Under Assault: Interference and Espionage in China's Secret War Against Canada

By Dennis Molinaro. 2025

DAISY audio (Direct to player), DAISY audio (Zip)
Espionage, Politics and government, Canadian history, Canadian authors (Non-fiction)

FOREWORD BY CHERIE WONG National security expert Dennis Molinaro reveals the shocking details of Beijing’s five-decades-long effort to influence and…

interfere in Canadian political life. From cultivating future political leaders at the end of the Cultural Revolution to the foreign-interference scandals that have shaken present-day Ottawa, this definitive book addresses one of the most urgent issues of our time.Amidst heightened tensions between Western nations and China, Canadians have found themselves astonished by hostage crises, cyberattacks, harassment of members of our government, and theft of intellectual property worth untold billions of dollars. Guided by Molinaro’s experience as a historian and China specialist, Under Assault focuses on the actions of the People’s Republic of China’s government and its governing party, the Chinese Communist Party, against Canada during the past fifty years. From Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau’s earliest journeys through the "Middle Kingdom" prior to his election to Parliament in the 1960s, the communist government of the PRC has perceived Canada as a staging ground for spying on and pressuring its ultimate target, the United States. When Canada’s first tech giant, Nortel, was plundered of intellectual property by digital spies; while Canada was manipulated into advocating against the independence of Taiwan; and as Chinese Canadians were targeted in the country where they thought they’d escaped Mao’s terrors, Canada’s leaders have too often seen only what they want to see in China: an emerging market of inestimable value and fertile soil for democratic change for a long-tyrannized people. Generations of Communist leadership have gladly allowed Canada’s government to labour under these misapprehensions, even when the evidence of China’s spying, theft and harassment of Canadian citizens has been happening right before its eyes. Canada has rarely allowed itself to believe what the rest of the world has long understood.Informed by numerous interviews with generations of Canadian politicians, diplomats and bureaucrats; members of diaspora communities targeted by China who have endured this harassment for too long; as well as by new revelations from recently declassified CSIS documents, Under Assault is a timely, eye-opening account of a country compromised by its own illusions in a time of rising global conflict and a burgeoning new world order.
