African Livestock Genetic Resources and Sustainable Breeding Strategies: Unlocking a Treasure Trove and Guide for Improved Productivity (Sustainable Development Goals Series)
Par Appolinaire Djikeng, Eveline M. Ibeagha-Awemu, Sunday O. Peters, John E. O. Rege. 2026
This open access book is a rich resource that chronicles the abundant livestock genetic resources in Africa. Organized in five…
sections, the chapters trace special productive and adaptive attributes of African livestock breeds, past breed improvement efforts, capacity building and strategies to effective utilization of available genetic resources in the era of modern technologies. The authors cover major farm animal groups as well as dromedaries, rabbits and grasscutters. In view of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (in particular SDG 2, Zero Hunger, and SDG 15, Life on Land), the purpose of this volume is to catalogue opportunities that can be leveraged with available technologies and technical knowhow for achieving rapid genetic gain and improved livestock productivity in Africa. It fosters the utilization of genetic resources and the protection of indigenous livestock biodiversity. Natural selection and humans have generated genetically diverse breeds of domesticated farm animals which can significantly contribute to the livelihoods of millions of Africans today. Africa&’s indigenous livestock are particularly hardy and well-adapted to local production contexts, having evolved adaptations to the continent&’s diverse climatic conditions and environmental pressures. In spite of the wealth of desirable genetic traits, however, some of Africa&’s iconic and lesser-known livestock are disappearing at an alarming rate. Moreover, despite increasing recognition of what this diversity portends, little has been done to understand and optimally harness the full potential of these genetic resources. By combining scientific basis and practical instructions, this work is a valuable manual for a diverse readership, including students, researchers, livestock farmers, livestock and non-governmental organizations, policy makers and business professionals who want to understand the uniqueness of African livestock genetic resources, production systems and strategies for sustainable improvement for the African environment.
This open access book discusses &“slow electronics&”, the study of devices processing signals with low frequencies. Computers have the remarkable…
ability to process data at high speeds, but they encounter difficulties when handling signals with low frequencies of less than ~100Hz. They unexpectedly require a substantial amount of energy. This poses a challenge for such as biomedical wearables and environmental monitors that need real-time processing of slow signals, especially in energy-limited 'edge&’ environments with small batteries. One possible solution to this issue is event-driven processing, which entails the use of non-volatile memory to read/write data and parameters every time a slow (sporadic) signal is detected. However, this approach is highly energy-consuming and unsuitable for the edge environments. To address this challenge, the authors propose &“slow electronics&” by developing electronic devices and systems that can process low-frequency signals more efficiently. The biological brain is an excellent example of the slow electronics, as it processes low-frequency signals in real time with exceptional energy efficiency. The authors have employed reservoir computing with a spiking neural network (SNN) to simulate the learning and inference of the brain. The integration of slow electronics with SNN reservoir computing allows for real-time data processing in edge environments without an internet connection. This will reveal the determinism or periodicity behind unconscious behaviours and habits that have been difficult to explore due to privacy barriers thus far. Moreover, it may provide a more profound understanding of a craftsman's skills, which they may not even be aware of. This book emphasises the most recent concepts and technological developments in slow electronics. Discussion on the captivating subject of slow electronics are given by delving into the complexities of reservoir calculation, analogue CMOS circuits, artificial neuromorphic devices, and numerical simulation with extended time constants, paving the way for more people-friendly devices in the future.

Perfection
Par Vincenzo Latronico. 2022
A 2025 International Booker Prize Longlist NomineeA scathing, provocative novel about contemporary existence by a rising star in Italian literature."One…
of Europe&’s most talented young writers, Latronico has written the great Berlin novel we&’ve all been waiting for." —Gideon Lewis-Kraus, New Yorker staff journalistAnna and Tom, an expat couple, have fashioned a dream life for themselves in Berlin. They are young digital "creatives" exploring the excitements of the city, freelancers without too many constraints, who spend their free time cultivating house plants and their images online. At first, they reasonably deduce that they've turned their passion for aesthetics into a viable, even enviable career, but the years go by, and Anna and Tom grow bored. As their friends move back home or move on, so their own work and sex life—and the life of Berlin itself—begin to lose their luster. An attempt to put their politics into action fizzles in embarrassed self-doubt. Edging closer to forty, they try living as digital nomads only to discover that, wherever they go, "the brand of oat milk in their flat whites was the same." Perfection—Vincenzo Latronico's first book to be translated into English—is a scathing novel about contemporary existence, a tale of two people gradually waking up to find themselves in various traps, wondering how it all came to be. Was it a lack of foresight, or were they just born too late?
README: A Bookish History of Computing from Electronic Brains to Everything Machines
Par W. Patrick Mccray. 2025
The essential role that the oldest literary technology—books—played in making computers popular and pervasive. In README, historian Patrick McCray argues that…
in order for computers to become ubiquitous, people first had to become interested in them, learn about them, and take the machines seriously. A powerful catalyst for this transformation was, ironically, one of the oldest information technologies we have: books. The author uses a carefully chosen selection of books, some iconic and others obscure, to describe this technological revolution as it unfolded in the half century after 1945. The book begins with a fundamental question: How does a new technology become well-known and widespread? McCray answers this by using books as a window into significant moments in the history of computing, books, publishing, and American culture.README offers a literary history of computers and, more broadly, information technologies between World War II and the dot.com crash of the early twenty-first century. From the electronic brains and cybernetics craze of the 1940s to the birth of AI, the rise of the personal computer, and the Internet-driven financial frenzy of the 1990s, books have proven a durable and essential way for people to learn how to use and think about computers. By offering a readable half-century of bookish history, README explains how computers became popular and pervasive.

Sweet Victory: How the Berlin Airlift Divided East and West
Par Joseph Pearson. 2025
The fascinating story of how a forgotten group of airmen—who had spent World War II dropping Allied bombs on Berlin—risked…
their lives in 1948-49 dropping chocolate bars from the sky. After Hitler&’s defeat in World War II, Europe&’s ruins were divided between East and West. The center of the struggle for influence was Berlin, split between the victorious Allied powers: the Soviets on one side and the Anglo-American and French forces on the other. Berlin was closer to the Soviet border than Paris, a strategic springboard for Stalin to rule Central Europe. In June of 1948, three years after the war, Stalin made his move to take complete control of the city. Laying siege, he blocked off supplies and transport to the Western sectors. The stakes could not have been higher: the Russian leader risked nuclear conflict. A false move––even one plane shot down by Russian fighters––could mean the atomic drop that American generals wanted. Was Berlin worth this enormous risk, and how would the West react? The Soviets expected West Berlin would be easy to win. They were stunned when their adversaries launched, instead, a daring operation to supply Berlin by plane. With 277,500 flights in total, one landing in Berlin every three minutes, British and American pilots delivered 2.3 million tons of essentials such as coal and flour and, famously, candy and chocolate. The Berlin Airlift became the largest air operation in history. The airlift, meanwhile, transformed West Germans from foes into willing partners against Stalin. In this sense, the first victory against Germany came in 1945—when the Allied powers pummeled it into submission. The sweet victory came three years later when the Western powers conquered the hearts and minds of their former enemy. The Berlin Airlift is one of the century&’s most dangerous and least understood crises of the twentieth century. Inexperienced and armed to the teeth, the world&’s superpowers surveyed each other for the first time. The Cold War began in this city in 1948-49, just as it would end there forty years later.
