Doctoring Documents: Mistruth in History and Cybersecurity (River Publishers Series in Document Engineering)
By Steven Simske, Dallen Simske. 2025
This book explores the primary methods, presented as a set of thirteen patterns, used to insert mistruth in historical narratives.…
These patterns culminate in the broadest of patterns, versioning and propaganda, which are used to show that mistruth is unavoidable in any historical narrative. This also supports the argument that a primary task of the historian is to provide their own contextual considerations sufficiently to help their readers create their own version. The value of a deep, mistruth-aware analysis of history is thus shown to be crucial for understanding how to protect data of all types in today’s electronic society. In the Internet age, the history, literature, culture, and training of humans has increasingly moved on-line. While this makes traditionally difficult-to-access content available (in theory) to all, it also exposes the truth associated with these hallmarks of civilization to attack by those who wish to replace it with their own version of history, literature, culture, and learning. Each chapter includes a brief “cyber salon” applying the historical principles to the field of cybersecurity, which is of critical importance to preserving truth in an on-line world.
The Role of Phages in Early Molecular Genetics: History of an Emerging Discipline
By Luigi Marongiu. 2026
In the shadow of global conflicts—from World War II through the tensions of the Cold War—an extraordinary scientific revolution was…
quietly unfolding. A brilliant collective of geneticists and microbiologists, known as the Phage Group, harnessed the power of bacterial viruses to unlock the very structure of genes, giving birth to Molecular Biology as we know it today. As antimicrobial resistance threatens global health, phages have reemerged as critical subjects of scientific inquiry, yet their pivotal role in the genetic discoveries of the 1940s–1960s remains largely overlooked—until now. The Role of Phages in Early Molecular Genetics: History of an Emerging Discipline bridges history, physics, and virology, offering both scientists and general readers a compelling narrative of how these microscopic entities revolutionized our understanding of life itself.Key Features: Explains how bacterial viruses became the unexpected heroes in humanity’s quest to understand the genetic code Discusses the forgotten historical and social forces—Lysenkoism, Spencerism, and McCarthyism—that shaped scientific progress yet vanished from our collective memory Provides a fascinating parallel between the emergence of phage biology and quantum physics, two revolutionary fields developing in tandem By illuminating the shared patterns of scientific discovery across disciplines, The Role of Phages in Early Molecular Genetics: History of an Emerging Discipline provides a timely reminder of how breakthrough knowledge emerges—and why the Phage Group’s legacy deserves its rightful place in scientific history.
Balkan Perspectives of Europe: Between East and West
By Eleonora Naxidou, Yura Konstantinova. 2026
Through the lens of the Balkan nations, this volume makes a valuable and significant contribution to the fields of European…
and Southeast European studies by reconsidering the East/West dichotomy – both in terms of the Orient–Occident divide and the Eastern–Western Europe binary.Balkan Perspectives of Europe focuses on concepts of Europe as articulated in the Balkans from the nineteenth century to the present – an area that remains largely underexplored, despite extensive research on national identity and the construction of the Other. The authors address this scholarly gap through meticulous bibliographic research, drawing on both published and unpublished sources in Balkan languages. A key strength of the collection is its inclusion of contributors from the Balkans as well as from wider European and American academic contexts, enabling a nuanced and comprehensive examination of the subject through internal and external perspectives. The authors argue that, in asserting their cultural identification with Europe, Balkan nations have developed concepts of Europe that resonate with Occidental discourses and offer a counter-narrative to dominant Western conceptualizations of the Balkans.Broadening access to these ideas, this book’s approach allows scholars, students, and general readers to deepen their understanding of the Balkan region and its perspectives on identity and otherness.

This volume offers the first critical examination of how societal pressures compelling individuals towards parenthood are experienced, processed, and enacted…
by queer characters in selected works by Thomas Mann, Virginia Woolf, and Marcel Proust—authors now widely regarded as queer, despite not having claimed such an identity in their own time. The selected texts include Mann’s Chaotic World and Childhood Sorrow and Death in Venice, Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway and Orlando, and key sections from Proust’s In Search of Lost Time. By engaging these texts in a pairwise dialogue, this book argues that Mann, Woolf, and Proust employ a shared repertoire of motifs and narrative strategies to depict queer characters’ struggles with the institution of parenthood. However, it contends that each author articulates a distinct and nuanced approach to this theme, shaped in part by the specific cultural contexts in which they wrote. To substantiate this argument, the monograph draws on insights from queer theory, metaphor theory, and the social sciences, predominantly from late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century scholarship, thereby reinforcing its commitment to linking literary modernism to contemporary lived realities. At the same time, the analysis situates these works within the broader socio-historical framework of the early twentieth century, which is to say the modernist period, with which these authors are conventionally associated.

Sikodiwa: Revisiting Filipino Indigenous Wisdom for Personal and Shared Well-Being
By Carl Lorenz Cervantes. 2025
Researcher and lecturer Carl Lorenz Cervantes explores the timeless wisdom, ancestral worldviews, and spiritual tools of Filipino psychology and culture—and…
offers Indigenous ways of knowing for all readers, Filipino and non-Filipino alike. Drawing from folklore, language, ethnography, and personal story, Sikodiwa is a mind-opening exploration for readers of Braiding Sweetgrass and Fresh Banana LeavesAng hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makararating sa pinaroroonan: Those who do not honor their roots will never reach their destination.—Filipino proverbFor centuries, Filipino lifeways were presented to outsiders through the distorted lens of colonization—and the oppression, exploitation, and denigration suffered by Filipino ancestors are well-documented. Here, Carl Lorenz Cervantes draws from Filipino folklore, language, and culture to reorient toward an Indigenous worldview: one that rejects being seen as a passive object in history. That reclaims Filipino identity, storytelling, and liberation on Filipino terms. And that embraces a powerful truth: We are the descendants of our colonized ancestors, but we are also the grandchildren of the revolution.Rooted in Indigenous Filipino worldviews, Sikodiwa offers a vital exploration of:Indigenization: reclaiming and restoring Indigenous worldviewsCosmic origins: Defining Indigenous through the lens of creation mythsFilipino-ness: Navigating processes of decolonization and the vagueness of cultural identityDeep spirituality: Folk healing, native spirituality, and deep, mystical realitiesCultural authenticity: navigating the complexities of identity and reconnecting with our most authentic selvesReclaiming values: Challenging stereotypes about Filipino cultural valuesTowards Kapwa: Understanding shared identity—and learning how it manifestsRevolution and fate: Applying cultural frameworks and existential tools to self-help practicesCervantes also shows how we can apply vital cultural frameworks to our own self-help and empowerment practices, from learning to use existential tools like Bahala na (letting go of burden) to understanding the inherently collective meaning-making of Kasaysayan (history). A vital contribution to a more inclusive world psychology, Sikodiwa uplifts Indigenized ways of knowing—and offers a timely and inspired path toward collective consciousness, cultural authenticity, and embodied well-being.
