Volume two of Sapiens: A Graphic History: the epic, beautifully illustrated graphic history of humankind, based on Yuval Noah Harari's internationally…

bestselling phenomenon.  Twelve thousand years ago, we humans fell into a trap. Volume II of Sapiens: A Graphic History tells the story of how we took over the world; how an unlikely marriage between a god and a bureaucrat created the first empires; and how war, famine, disease, and inequality became a part of the human condition.Sound sombre? Not with this cast of entertaining characters, returning from Volume I to explore the Agricultural Revolution. Yuval, Zoe, Prof. Saraswati, Cindy and Bill (turned farmers), Detective Lopez, and Dr. Fiction – are all back to travel the length and breadth of human history. The cunning Mephisto shows them how to entrap humans, King Hammurabi lays down the law, and Confucius explains harmonious society. With guest appearances by Thomas Jefferson, Scarlet O&’Hara and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. And there&’s plenty more genre-bending to enjoy in this book. The origins of modern farming are introduced through Elizabethan tragedy, the changing fortunes of domesticated plants and animals are tracked in the columns of the Daily Business News, the story of urbanization is told as a travel brochure offering discount journeys to ancient Babylon and China, while the history of inequality is scouted out in a superhero detective story.

We Took the Streets: Fighting for Latino Rights with the Young Lords

An inside look at the Young Lords, the radical Puerto Rican activist group of the 1960s, from one of its…

founding members. In 1968 Miguel "Mickey" Melendez was a college student, developing pride in his unique cultural identity as Cuban and Puerto Rican, while growing increasingly aware of the lack of quality health care, education, and housing—not to mention respect—his people endured for the sake of the American Dream. He was not alone. Bringing together other like-minded Latino student activists, like Juan Gonzalez, Felipe Luciano, David Perez, and Pablo "Yoruba" Guzman, Melendez helped to form the central committee of what would become the New York branch of the Young Lords. Over the course of the next three years, the Young Lords were a force to be reckoned with. From their storefront offices in East Harlem, they defiantly took back the streets of El Barrio. In addition to running clothing drives, day-care centers, and free breakfast and health programs, the Young Lords became known for their bold radical actions, like the takeovers of the First People's Church and Lincoln Hospital. Front-page news, they forced the city to take notice of their demands for social and political justice and make drastic policy changes. Melendez was part of it all, and describes the idealism, anger, and vitality of the Lords with the unsparing eye of an insider. For the first time, he reveals the extent of the clandestine military branch of the organization and his role coordinating and arming the underground.Although they were active for only a brief period of time, the legacy of the Young Lords—their urban guerrilla, media-savvy tactics, as well as their message of popular power and liberation, civil rights, and ethnic equity—is lasting. We Took the Streets is one man's passionate and inspiring story of the Puerto Rican struggle for equality, civil rights, and independence.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs returns with a twisty, surprise-packed thriller featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, who…

finds herself at the center of an arson investigation, a deepening mystery, and a stunning culmination of violence and deception. It&’s never easy working fire scenes, Tempe thinks. Called to Washington, DC to analyze the victims of a building set ablaze amid mysterious circumstances, she sees all of her misgivings justified. The building site is in Foggy Bottom, a neighborhood with a colorful past and present, and the residence&’s ownership becomes even more suspicious when Tempe delves into the building's past. The pieces start falling into place strangely and quickly, and, sensing a good story, Tempe teams with a new ally, telejournalist Ivy Doyle. Soon the duo learns that back in the thirties and forties the property belonged to a member a group of bootleggers and racketeers known as the Foggy Bottom Gang. Though interesting, this fact seems irrelevant—until the son of a Foggy Bottom gang member is shot dead at his farm in Fairfax County, Virginia. Coincidence? Targeted attacks? So many questions. As Tempe and Ivy dig deeper, an arrest is finally made. Then another Foggy Bottom Gang-linked property burns to the ground, claiming one more victim. Slowly, Tempe&’s instincts begin raising flags. Have too many of her moves while in Washington been anticipated in advance? Long after that first fire is extinguished its flames of consequence spread outward, and eventually Tempe finds herself fighting for her life.

An alarming exposé of the new challenges to literary freedom in the age of social media—when anyone with an identity…

and an internet connection can be a censor. In That Book Is Dangerous!, Adam Szetela investigates how well-intentioned and often successful efforts to diversify American literature have also produced serious problems for literary freedom. Although progressives are correct to be focused on right-wing attempts at legislative censorship, Szetela argues for attention to the ways that left-wing censorship controls speech within the publishing industry itself. The author draws on interviews with presidents and vice presidents at the Big Five publishers, literary agents at the most prestigious agencies, award-winning authors, editors, marketers, sensitivity readers, and other industry professionals to examine the new publishing landscape. What he finds is unsettling: mandatory sensitivity reads; morality clauses in author contracts; even censorship of &“dangerous&” books in the name of antiracism, feminism, and other forms of social justice. These changes to acquisition practices, editing policies, and other aspects of literary culture are a direct outgrowth of the culture of public outcries on X, Goodreads, Change.org, and other online platforms, where users accuse authors—justifiably or not—of racism, sexism, homophobia, and other transgressions. But rather than genuinely address the economic inequities of literary production, this current moral crusade over literature serves only to entrench the status quo. &“While the right is remaking the world in its image,&” he writes, &“the left is standing in a circular firing squad.&”Compellingly argued and incisively written, the book is a much-needed wake-up call for anyone who cares about reading, writing, and the publication of books—as well as the generations of young readers we are raising.
