information, and effectively write a wide variety of story types. This classic text's reputation is built on its thorough grounding in the basic skills that aspiring reporters need. Section One introduces students to the current journalism landscape and the foundational tools of journalism, including news judgement, newswriting style, and grammar and language choice. In Section Two, the text explores questions of libel, privacy, newsgathering issues, and ethics. Section Three teaches students to write summary and alternative leads; organize and write the body of a news story; interview sources and integrate quotations; write feature stories; write for broadcast news; and integrate photo, video, and audio elements. Finally, in Section Four, students learn about specific areas of journalism, including covering speeches and meetings; writing brights, follow-ups, roundups, sidebars, and obituaries; public affairs reporting; investigative reporting; and public relations. The text engages students through its use of clear, accessible language and extensive examples, often drawn from recent news articles about important contemporary topics including the COVID-19 pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the war in Ukraine. Extensive and realistic practice exercises at the end of each chapter give students the opportunity to apply and master the skills under discussion.

Controlling the Dangerous Classes: A History of Criminal Justice in America
By Randall G. Shelden, Pavel V. Vasiliev. 2018
Throughout history, the powerful have created laws, developed agencies to enforce those laws, and established institutions to punish lawbreakers. Maintaining…
the social order to their advantage resulted in the systematic repression of disadvantaged groups—the “dangerous classes.” The third edition retains a historical approach to exploring patterns of social control and, through current examples, demonstrates how those strategies continue today. The authors trace the roots of race, class, and gender bias in how laws are written, interpreted, and applied. The management of dangerous classes is not a recent phenomenon; there is a long history of keeping those who derive the least advantage from the status quo (and therefore pose the greatest threat) under control. There was and is one system of justice for the privileged and a very different system for the less privileged. The criminal justice system—from the law to daily operations of the police, courts, and corrections—generally comes down hardest on those with the least amount of power and influence and is the most lenient with those with the most power and influence. The book raises critical questions. What is a crime? What is law? Whose interests are served by the law and the criminal justice system? What patterns are repeated generation after generation? How does the criminal justice system relate to larger issues such as social inequality, social class, race, and gender? Contemplation of these topics contributes to informed public dialogue and careful deliberation about the present state and the future of criminal justice.
Communities and Crime: An Enduring American Challenge
By Francis T. Cullen, Pamela Wilcox, Ben Feldmeyer. 2018
Social scientists have long argued over the links between crime and place. The authors of Communities and Crime provide an…
intellectual history that traces how varying images of community have evolved over time and influenced criminological thinking and criminal justice policy. The authors outline the major ideas that have shaped the development of theory, research, and policy in the area of communities and crime. Each chapter examines the problem of the community through a defining critical or theoretical lens: the community as social disorganization; as a system of associations; as a symptom of larger structural forces; as a result of criminal subcultures; as a broken window; as crime opportunity; and as a site of resilience. Focusing on these changing images of community, the empirical adequacy of these images, and how they have resulted in concrete programs to reduce crime, Communities and Crime theorizes about and reflects upon why some neighborhoods produce so much crime. The result is a tour of the dominant theories of place in social science today.

Christianity with Power: Your Worldview and Your Experience of the Supernatural
By Charles H. Kraft. 1989
Power. Politicians crave it. Money buys it. And some people will do anything to get it. In a world where…
New Agers rely on crystals and channeling to tap into spiritual power, the Christian is reminded that Jesus used supernatural power to heal the sick, cast out demons, and raise the dead. Two thousand years later, the world still desperately needs a Savior who works in power. However, many modern Christians are embarrassed and reluctant to preach a gospel accompanied by supernatural power. Our Western worldview conditions us to fit God into a neat, predictable mold. But Kraft is convinced that the power of the gospel will not be confined to our categories. Step by step, he offers a biblical understanding of signs and wonders and shows how Christians can become God's instruments to heal the sick, to work miracles, and to oppose the counterfeit powers of this age.

Exploring and Developing the Use of Art-Based Genograms in Family of Origin Therapy was written to share the almost magical…
understandings that literally become visible when we use symbols, metaphors and imagery in the genogram process. The traditional genogram process is invaluable in helping people understand family history and who was present in generations of family life. An astonishing movement into depth of meaning happens when people are asked to create a visual image or symbol for their family members and ancestors. Suddenly, through metaphor, we can see the emotional impact and the qualities of relationships that these images and therefore family members hold. Unspoken or hidden family beliefs, patterns and rules suddenly surface from the depths of the art, freeing one from following along unconsciously and opening up the possibilities for choice as one moves into the future. The foundation of the art-based genogram provides abundant information about the family generational theme that is revealing and insightful for the art maker. It allows support for a creative depiction of the art maker's ancestral pains, sufferings, joys, celebrations, and life's viewpoints. This creative endeavor reveals therapeutic information that art makers can integrate into their current, present-day lives. Major topics include: (1) the historical use of the genogram; (2) the family of origin and unspoken or hidden family beliefs; (3) how to create art-based genograms; (4) therapeutic uses in individual therapy; (5) therapeutic uses in couples and family work; (6) how to welcome children to the process; (7) the intergenerational flow of special issues; and (8) a wide variety of uses for art-based genograms. Case examples are used to illustrate specific points throughout the book. This unique text will be a valuable resource for art therapists, counselors, and other mental health professionals.
