The Soul's Pilgrimage: Volume 1: From Advent to Pentecost
By Robert D. Crouse. 2023
This rich volume collects 47 sermons by the late priest and theologian Father Robert D. Crouse – one of the…
finest contemplative theological minds of our age. They are arranged to follow the principal celebrations of the ancient Christian Year – from Advent to Pentecost, while a second, companion volume (The Soul’ s Pilgrimage Volume II: The Descent of the Dove and the Spiritual Life) completes the year – so they can be read in step with the liturgical seasons. A Preface by former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams highlights some of the connecting threads of the sermons – in particular the theme of Divine Friendship offered by the Gospel. The inspired clarity of these sermons brings to life the perennial truth of the Church year as a path of holiness for all believers. This is a volume for those who want to enter into the pattern of spiritual growth and nourishment that the Christian year has always made available but is here renewed for our time.

The Middle East in the World Economy, 1800-1914
By Roger Owen. 1993
Examines the growth and transformation of the Middle East economy during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The text looks…
at how the region's economic structures were fundamentally altered by the growing impact of European trade and finance, and by the internal reforms of the rulers of Egypt. It also examines in detail the impact of this process on the four central areas of the Middle East. The result, the author argues, was the creation of a fixed pattern of agricultural, industrial and financial activity. The states formed after the collapse of teh Ottoman Empire found that altering this pattern in their attempts to promote a less dependent form of development was frought with difficulty; and the problems they faced and their different approaches are still highly relevant to the Middle East's economic development today.

The Ottoman Empire and European Capitalism, 1820-1913: Trade, investment and production
By Şevket Pamuk. 1987
Originally published in 1987, this book examines the consequences of the nineteenth-century economic penetration of Europe into the Ottoman Empire.…
Professor Pamuk makes subtle use of a very wide range of sources encompassing the statistics of most of the European countries and Ottoman records not previously tapped for this purpose. His economic and quantitative analysis established the long-term trends of Ottoman foreign trade and European investment in the Empire. The later chapters focus on the commercialisation of agriculture and the decline as well as the resistance of handicrafts. Geographically, most of the volume focuses on the area within the 1911 borders of the Empire - Turkey, northern Greece, Greater Syria and Iraq. Professor Pamuk compares the relationship of the Ottoman Empire to the world economy with that of other parts of the non-European world and concludes that the two distinguishing features of the Ottoman case were the environment of Great Power rivalry and the ability of the government to react against European pressures.

The Pasha's Peasants: Land, society, and economy in Lower Egypt, 1740-1858
By Kenneth Μ. Cuno. 1992
This book presents a revisionist view of the eighteenth-and nineteenth-century rural origins of modern Egypt. By adopting a long-term perspective…
it offers an alternative to most intrepretations of Egypt’s past which, in my view, draw too sharp a distinction between the “Ottoman” and “modern” periods. I have abandoned the view of modern Egypt as Sleeping Beauty, according to which the country’s “awakening” as a modern nation was the result of contact with Europe. I do not claim to have a new theoretical approach, but merely a sensible one that permits us to see a greater degree of continuity in Egyptian rural history than traditional views admit, and to identify areas of genuinely significant change that heretofore have been overlooked or not well under¬stood.
What Were the Crusades
By Jonathan Riley-Smith. 2009
Few attempts had been made to define 'the crusade' before this book was first published in 1977. Since then, a…
number of historians have built on Jonathan Riley-Smith's original conclusions. Now in its fourth edition, this classic starting point for the study of the crusading movement has been updated to take into account the latest developments in the field. What Were the Crusades? elucidates key ideas and institutions which have been neglected in the past demonstrates, through the analysis of European campaigns, that the movement was not confined to expeditions launched to recover the Holy Land - or to defend the Christian presence there - and shows that it continued, in one form or another, into the eighteenth century and perhaps beyond draws attention to the increasing interest of historians in the motivation of crusaders now includes material on a child crusader and concludes with a short discussion of the current effects of aggressive Pan-Islamism features a new map illustrating the different theatres of war Original in its conception, this essential guide is a contribution of major importance to crusading scholarship. In its clear and concise treatment of the issues, it remains an unequalled introduction to the subject for students and general readers alike.
Living Things: COLLECTED POEMS
By Anne Porter. 2006
Living Things contains all the poems in Porter’s National Book Award Finalist collection, An Altogether Different Language, plus forty-four new…
works. David Shapiro writes in his foreword, “Anne Porter’s diction is as modest as that of William Carlos Williams or of a poet she nurtured as a houseguest for many years, James Schuyler. . . . She has the quality of paying attention to ultimate reality that Fairfield Porter, who painted her so often alone and with their five children, told me should be the conclusion of every sermon. . . . She is an American religious poet of stature who reminds us that the idea of the holy is still possible for us.” Living Things is a book for any lover of fine poetry, but will be particularly inspiring and meaningful to Christians whose faith is strong, and would make a beautiful gift.

Plain English for Lawyers
By Richard C. Wydick and Amy E. Sloan. 2024
Plain English for Lawyers has been a favorite of law students, legal writing teachers, lawyers, and judges for almost 40…
years. The seventh edition, co-authored by Amy Sloan, updates this classic text while preserving all the approaches that make it such a standard in the field. In addition to guiding students through techniques for producing clear writing, this edition includes new exercises, a discussion of the principles of document design, a chapter on the appropriate uses of generative AI for writing, and detailed coverage of best practices for correct pronoun usage and avoiding gendered language. Plain English for Lawyers remains (in size only!) a little book, small enough and palatable enough not to intimidate overloaded law students. In January 2005, the Legal Writing Institute gave Wydick its Golden Pen Award for having written Plain English for Lawyers. The Legal Writing Institute is a non-profit organization that provides a forum for discussion and scholarship about legal writing, analysis, and research. The Institute has over 1,300 members representing all of the ABA-accredited law schools in the United States. Its membership also includes law teachers from other nations, English teachers, and practicing lawyers.
