Collective Farmers, Master Science: Youth, Education, and Inequality in the Russian Countryside, 1960s–1970s
Par Tatiana Voronina. 2025
Soviet authorities had long aimed to create a classless society and eliminate the differences between the city and the countryside.…
Collective Farmers, Master Science! describes the Russian peasantry’s transformation and ultimate extinction through the young people who became immersed in a new Soviet education system. In the process, they adopted the attitudes of Soviet modernity and abandoned the long-standing social patterns of their class. Memory studies and Soviet sociocultural scholar Tatiana Voronina argues that inequality was created by Soviet educational institutions. This book describes how Soviet modernity was conceptualized and implemented by focusing on the work of the rural Komsomol, rural schools, and an agricultural university. The book is written as a micro-history of three distinct rural communities in the Vologda region. It is based on rich archival material from central and regional archives of Russia and oral history interviews with former members of the region’s rural youth. Collective Farmers, Master Science! illuminates the intricacy and diversity of the Soviet modernization processes that took place in the Russian provinces during the 1960s and 1970s.

Armored Forces of Russia and the Soviet Union: Tanks and Armored Vehicles
Par Victor Schunkow. 2025
This text covers all of the data science, machine learning, and deep learning topics relevant to materials science and engineering,…
accompanied by numerous examples and applications. Almost all methods and algorithms introduced are implemented “from scratch” using Python and NumPy. The book starts with an introduction to statistics and probabilities, explaining important concepts such as random variables and probability distributions, Bayes’ theorem and correlations, sampling techniques, and exploratory data analysis, and puts them in the context of materials science and engineering. Therefore, it serves as a valuable primer for both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a review for research scientists and practicing engineers. The second part provides an in-depth introduction of (statistical) machine learning. It begins with outlining fundamental concepts and proceeds to explore a variety of supervised learning techniques for regression and classification, including advanced methods such as kernel regression and support vector machines. The section on unsupervised learning emphasizes principal component analysis, and also covers manifold learning (t-SNE and UMAP) and clustering techniques. Additionally, feature engineering, feature importance, and cross-validation are introduced. The final part on neural networks and deep learning aims to promote an understanding of these methods and dispel misconceptions that they are a “black box”. The complexity gradually increases until fully connected networks can be implemented. Advanced techniques and network architectures, including GANs, are implemented “from scratch” using Python and NumPy, which facilitates a comprehensive understanding of all the details and enables the user to conduct their own experiments in Deep Learning.

Ghosts Behind Glass: Encountering Extinction in Museums
Par Dolly Jørgensen. 2025
How museums display extinct species—and what these exhibits say about us. While it’s no longer possible to encounter a…
dodo in the wild, we can still come face-to-face with them in museums. The remains of extinct species—whether taxidermied, skeletal, drawn, or sculpted—stare back at us from display cases. In this moving meditation on what’s lost and what endures, environmental historian Dolly Jørgensen visits natural history collections worldwide—from Shanghai to Philadelphia, from Edinburgh to Hobart, Australia—to understand the many ways that museums tell stories about extinction. She encounters extinct animals that are framed as cultural artifacts and as rare valuables, that are memorialized with lists, and that are brought to life through augmented reality. She draws our attention to creatures with prominent afterlives—passenger pigeons, giant moas, thylacines—as well as those that are less likely to be discussed or displayed. Throughout, Jørgensen examines the relationship between museums and the natural world, so readers can look more closely at exhibits about extinction, studying the displays for what is there, as well as what is missing. During a period of rapid species loss driven by humanity’s environmental impact, Ghosts Behind Glass asks what we can learn about our world from the presence of the extinct.

Vanished Beyond the Map: The Mystery of Lost Explorer Hubert Darrell
Par Adam Shoalts. 2025
Canada&’s greatest modern-day explorer sets out into the arctic wilderness to solve a mystery more than 100 years old.In November…
1910, explorer Hubert Darrell vanished in the uncharted wilds of the Northwest Territories. A prospector who had been swept up in the Klondike Gold Rush, Darrell later made his name as an expert guide, trapper, and restless wanderer who ventured where few others dared. At a time when travel by dogsled in the North was the norm, Darrell became legendary for traversing thousands of kilometres alone and on foot; ranging over mountains and across windswept tundra from Alaska to Hudson Bay. During his epic journeys, he helped rescue sailors trapped in sea ice, led Mounties on their patrols, and even guided some of the era&’s most famous explorers. Roald Amundsen, the first person to reach the South Pole, held Darrell in awe, remarking once that with men like him, he could go to the moon. Contemporaries regarded Darrell as the hardiest, most competent explorer of his day. Despite clues reported by Inuit trappers and Mounted Police inquiries, his fate remains a mystery. While his disappearance sparked headlines around the world, Darrell&’s name would soon also vanish from the history books, ironically, just as surely as he had in the wild.Yet Darrell left behind a trail of letters, journals, and hand-drawn maps. With these faded clues and his zeal for adventure, Adam Shoalts retraces Darrell&’s forgotten routes through the wilderness, searching for cabin ruins and old campsites. He unearths water-stained records and tracks down elderly individuals in the hopes that they might remember someone who&’d known Darrell. Part detective story, part biography, and part first-person adventure narrative, Vanished Beyond the Map combines expeditions with historical research to solve one of exploration history&’s enduring cold cases—the mystery of Hubert Darrell.
