This book provides a detailed view of the author’s conception of ‘apocalyptic phenomenology’, referring to the revelatory and self-disclosing nature…
of phenomenological thinking, a thinking that is central to our philosophical traditions today. The concept of ‘apocalyptic phenomenology’, i.e., a phenomenological theology that discloses the ultimate ground of being, God in the form of divine revelation, is original. At the same time, it is rooted in the phenomenological tradition of Offenbarung (revelation, revealing) as the basic feature of phenomena. In the author’s view, reality is self-disclosing, ‘apocalyptic’, and thus he explains the connections between the original, biblical notion of apocalupsis and the important developments of our philosophical traditions leading up to the ‘theological turn of phenomenology’. The chapters are framed around a focus on newness and engage with the work of key thinkers such as Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Paul Ricœur, Hans Urs von Balthasar, and Anton Günther.Apocalyptic Phenomenology will be of interest to scholars of both theology and philosophy.
This book focuses on the theme of "the impact of education development on rural poverty reduction in China". Firstly, it…
reviews in detail the research results on the relationship between education and poverty at home and abroad, and then analyzes in depth the mechanism of the role of education in promoting rural poverty reduction, taking into account the causes of rural poverty and anti-poverty measures and tools. On this basis, we empirically analyze the effects of education level, education level, education type, compulsory education law implementation and university expansion policies on rural poverty in China based on macro and micro, spatial and non-spatial, static and dynamic, and unidimensional and multidimensional poverty perspectives with the help of spatial lag model (SAR), spatial error model (SEM), logit model, double difference model and breakpoint regression model. poverty. Finally, integrating the empirical results with the actual national situation, relevant policy recommendations are proposed to promote rural anti-poverty in terms of upgrading education level, optimizing education level structure, and strengthening vocational education development. In order to enrich the research results related to education development and poverty alleviation, provide guidance for assessing the quality of precise poverty alleviation as well as improve the targeting and effectiveness of future poverty alleviation work, and provide more valuable references for decision-making in the anti-poverty cause in China.
This book presents cutting-edge algorithms for solving large-scale quadratic programming (QP) and/or QCQP. While applying these algorithms to the class…
of QP problems with the spectrum confined to a positive interval, the theory guarantees finding the prescribed precision solution through a uniformly bounded number of simple iterations, like matrix-vector multiplications. Key concepts explored include the active set strategy, spectral gradients, and augmented Lagrangian methods. The book provides a comprehensive quantitative convergence theory, avoiding unspecified constants. Through detailed numerical experiments, the author demonstrates the algorithms' superior performance compared to traditional methods, especially in handling large problems with sparse Hessian. The performance of the algorithms is shown on large-scale (billions of variables) problems of mechanics, optimal control, and support vector machines. Ideal for researchers and practitioners in optimization and computational mathematics, this volume is also an introductory text and a reference for advanced studies in nonlinear programming. Whether you're a scholar in applied mathematics or an engineer tackling complex optimization challenges, this book offers valuable insights and practical tools for your work.

The Social Psychology of the Human-Animal Bond
By Laurent Bègue-Shankland. 2022
Winner of the 2024 Prix Emile Girardeau prize, rewarding exceptional work in the economic or sociological sciences, this book examines…
afresh our relationships of dominance with and affection for animals. It reviews how animals played a pivotal role in ancient civilizations, and still play a fundamental part in human lives, and looks at how many humans feel deep affection and other strong emotions towards animals. This book offers an understanding of human relationships with animals, providing an analysis of paradoxical human behaviour towards animals and a look at how empathy toward animals can be manipulated. Most notably, this book offers an in-depth look at Bègue-Shankland's adaptation of the famous Stanley Milgram’s experiment on submission to authority (this time, ordinary men and women are led to harm what they believe to be a lab animal (actually a robot) for the sake of science) to shed new light on what influences our behaviour and empathy towards animals. This book shows how much our relations with animals – from attachment to abuse – reveal our identity and our relations with others. It will provide a valuable resource not only to students and researchers studying human-animal relations, zoology, and human psychology, but also to a general reader interested in animal advocacy.

The European Artificial Intelligence Act: Promises and Perils? (Law, Governance and Technology Series #78)
By Vera Lúcia Raposo. 2025
The legal and regulatory landscape for artificial intelligence is shifting, and this is the book that will equip you to…
navigate it with clarity and authority.Gathering contributions from leading experts in the field, this edited volume provides one of the first in-depth examinations of the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) in its final form. It is not a mere commentary. Rather, it delivers a critical and structured analysis of how the AI Act will reconfigure the governance of digital technologies in Europe and beyond. The chapters engage closely with the legal text, unpacking its architecture, regulatory logic, and underlying normative choices. Key elements of the framework - ranging from high-risk systems and prohibited practices to conformity assessments and the institutional role of national authorities - are examined in detail, with an eye to both doctrinal coherence and regulatory practice.Importantly, the volume situates the AI Act within the broader EU legal landscape, exploring its intersection with instruments such as the General Data Protection Regulation, the Medical Devices Regulation, and other sector-specific regimes. In doing so, it exposes synergies, tensions, and unresolved questions that will shape implementation and enforcement. The analysis is not confined to the European context. Dedicated chapters on the approaches adopted in non-EU jurisdictions provide a comparative dimension, highlighting both shared concerns and diverging regulatory philosophies. The result is a richer understanding of where global AI governance may be heading and how fragmented or coordinated it might become.Designed for legal scholars, practitioners, regulators, and policy experts, this book is more than a reference: it is an indispensable guide to the law that will define Europe&’s approach to artificial intelligence for years to come.
Ecocide: Massive Damage to the Environment and the International Criminal System
By Djalma Alvarez Brochado Neto. 2025
This book offers a thorough exploration of the evolving concept of ecocide within the realm of international criminal law. Authored…
by Djalma Brochado, it addresses the urgent need to recognize and criminalize severe environmental destruction as an international crime. The book tackles critical issues such as the challenges in defining ecocide, the historical development of the term, and its global legal implications. Readers will find an in-depth analysis of various legal approaches to ecocide across different jurisdictions, highlighting the diverse interpretations and enforcement mechanisms that have emerged. Brochado also examines the current gaps in international law that hinder the effective prosecution of environmental crimes and proposes frameworks for establishing ecocide as a recognized crime under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court. Additionally, the book evaluates real cases of large-scale environmental destruction, whether labeled as ecocide or not, that could serve as precedents for criminalization under international law. This analysis provides practical insights into how existing and future legal frameworks could be applied to address such crimes. One of the key strengths of this book is its detailed examination of existing penal codes around the world that incorporate ecocidal behavior, offering comparative insights and shedding light on potential legal models for global adoption. Brochado&’s work is particularly valuable for legal scholars, policymakers, and environmental advocates interested in the intersection of environmental protection and international criminal justice. The book not only provides a legal analysis but also engages in a broader discussion on the ethical and moral imperatives for protecting the planet, making it an essential resource for those seeking to understand and influence the future of environmental law.

oil and gas resources exploitation. The hydrofracturing, which forms a complex fracture network in deep reservoir rock, is a key technology for oil and gas flow and extraction. The propagation behaviors (such as deflection, penetration, and intersection) and fracture network morphology are crucial to the evaluation and control of oil and gas production. This book mainly introduces from the following three aspects, including deflection of fracturing fracture network disturbed by discontinuity in rock, deflection of fracturing fracture network disturbed by multiple fractures, propagation and deflection of fracturing fracture network in supercritical CO₂ fracturing. The book focuses on the numerical research progresses of deflection of fracturing fracture network disturbed by discontinuity and multiple fractures in rock, which covers the following main contents: (1) dynamic intersection and deflection behaviors of hydraulic fractures meeting granules and natural fractures in tight reservoir rock based on statistical modelling and fractal characterization, (2) deflection behaviors and fractal morphology of hydraulic fractures meeting beddings and granules with variable geometrical configurations and geo-mechanical properties, (3) dynamic propagation of tensile and shear fractures induced by impact load in rock based on dual bilinear cohesive zone model, (4) center- and edge-type intersections of hydraulic fracture network under varying crossed natural fractures and fluid injection rate, (5) wells connection and long hydraulic fracture induced by multi-well hydrofracturing utilizing crossed perforation clusters, (6) deflection of fracture networks and gas production in multi-well hydrofracturing utilizing parallel and crossed perforation clusters, (7) supercritical CO₂-driven intersections of multi-well fracturing fracture network and induced micro-seismic events in naturally fractured reservoir. Given its scope, the book offers a valuable reference guide for researchers, postgraduates and undergraduates majoring in engineering mechanics, mining engineering, petroleum engineering, geotechnical engineering, and geological engineering.
Heidegger und die Lebenskunst: Zwischen Existenzdenken und Gelassenheit (Schriften zur Kritischen Lebenskunst)
By Günter Gödde, Jörg Zirfas, Eike Brock, Dennis Sölch. 2025
