The Eleventh Edition of Farquharson’s continues to provide both the fundamental surgical skills needed by junior trainee surgeons and the…

general surgical subspecialty knowledge necessary for higher surgical training. The topics cover the whole patient, with the concept that trainee surgeons need an overview and all surgeons need to occasionally operate outside of their area of expertise.Although surgeons in training no longer anticipate that they will be expected to undertake unfamiliar operations without supervision, disease and injury do not respect specialty organ practice, especially in emergency surgery and trauma. With increasing specialisation, even experienced surgeons can sometimes be involved in a surgical emergency, or an intraoperative complication, requiring them to perform an operative procedure in a subspecialty other than their own. With this in mind, each of the specialist authors have focused their topic on principles for the general surgeon, and the editors have consolidated and adapted the information to bridge the gap between general and specialty surgery. In many parts of the world, General Surgery has remained an all-encompassing surgical discipline, and in remote hospitals, General Surgeons may be the only surgical specialists. When transfer and referral options are unavailable, or delayed, these surgeons may have to offer a limited service in orthopaedics, neurosurgery, urology and obstetrics. For these reasons, some operations in other surgical disciplines are included, and here the emphasis is more on what might be achievable in difficult circumstances, rather than on a more sophisticated procedure, if this would be impractical outside a specialist centre. This classic concise textbook will benefit all General Surgeons, whether already well established or just embarking on their career in surgery.

Eight Principles for a Modern CBT is a training guide for both new and experienced clinicians who want to understand…

and apply the newest developments in cognitive behavioral therapy. It’s a hands-on manual that helps readers sort through competing models for addressing cognitive change, emotion processing, and behavior change. When is acceptance indicated, and how does one “do” acceptance in therapy? How can mindfulness be incorporated in ways that are brief, simple to teach, and effective? How should therapists use clients’ values and hopes as guides for setting a course in therapy, rather than focusing exclusively on medicalized diagnoses? How does one tailor treatment for varying levels of severity of impairment? In these pages, readers will find answers to and insights on these questions and much more, including perspectives on evolutionary psychology and newer, process-based models that put human suffering in a less medicalized and stigmatizing frame.

Deviations is the definitive collection of writing by Gayle S. Rubin, a pioneering theorist and activist in feminist, lesbian and…

gay, queer, and sexuality studies since the 1970s. Rubin first rose to prominence in 1975 with the publication of "The Traffic in Women," an essay that had a galvanizing effect on feminist thinking and theory. In another landmark piece, "Thinking Sex," she examined how certain sexual behaviors are constructed as moral or natural, and others as unnatural. That essay became one of queer theory's foundational texts. Along with such canonical work, Deviations features less well-known but equally insightful writing on subjects such as lesbian history, the feminist sex wars, the politics of sadomasochism, crusades against prostitution and pornography, and the historical development of sexual knowledge. In the introduction, Rubin traces her intellectual trajectory and discusses the development and reception of some of her most influential essays. Like the book it opens, the introduction highlights the major lines of inquiry pursued for nearly forty years by a singularly important theorist of sex, gender, and culture.

Contemporary Art in the Conflicts of Globalization presents an authoritative introductory guide to the emergence, development, and meanings of contemporary…

art around the world from the era of twentieth-century western colonialism to the crises and conflicts of globalization over the last three decades.Examining contemporary art’s connections to and breaks from modern art in the last century, the study offers an innovative account of its artists’ formation during the era of decolonization after 1945 and the Cold War. Through a series of complementary analytic perspectives, the book considers the cultural politics of the global art world, its patterns of inclusion and exclusion, and charts contemporary art’s relations to feminist, anti-racist, and climate change activisms (among others) as these have both mutated and interconnected since the 1990s. More than 50 illustrations are included and are the basis for the book’s empirical and theoretically informed study. The book is designed for both students and general readers and will be of great value for all who see contemporary art and global cultures as a contested ground of creativity and social significance, within which transformative progressive change may be achieved for the whole world and all its peoples.

Carpet specialist Dorothy Armstrong tells the stories surrounding twelve of the world’s most fascinating carpets.Dorothy Armstrong’s Threads of Empire is…

a spellbinding look at the history of the world through the stories of twelve carpets. Beautiful, sensuous, and enigmatic, great carpets follow power. Emperors, shahs, sultans and samurai crave them as symbols of earthly domination. Shamans and priests desire them to evoke the spiritual realm. The world’s 1% hunger after them as displays of extreme status. And yet these seductive objects are made by poor and illiterate weavers, using the most basic materials and crafts; hedgerow plants for dyes, fibers from domestic animals, and the millennia-old skills of interweaving warps, wefts and knots. In Threads of Empire, Armstrong tells the histories of some of the world’s most fascinating carpets, exploring how these textiles came into being then were transformed as they moved across geography and time in the slipstream of the great. She shows why the world’s powerful were drawn to them, but also asks what was happening in the weavers’ lives, and how they were affected by events in the world outside their tent, village or workshop. In its wide-ranging examination of these dazzling objects, from the 5th century BCE contents of the tombs of Scythian chieftains, to the carpets under the boots of Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill at the 1945 Yalta Peace Conference, Threads of Empire uncovers a new, hitherto hidden past right beneath our feet.
