Expanding on the trailblazing ideas of Ellen Langer, this provocative volume explores the implications of critical mindfulness for making psychology…

more responsive and its practice more meaningful. Powerful critiques take the discipline to task for positioning therapists as experts over their clients and focusing on outcomes to the detriment of therapeutic process. Contributors use the principles of Langerian mindfulness to inform self-understanding and relationships, areas such as athletic performance and consumer decision making, and basic and complex forms of cognitive engagement. The mindfulness demonstrated here is not only critical but also creative, inclusive, and humane, with the potential to transform the consciousness of psychology and other mind-based fields. Included in the coverage:  Critical mindfulness of psychology&’s mindlessness. The construct of mindfulness amidst and along conceptions of rationality. Understanding confidence: its roots and role in performance. Mindfulness in action: the emergence of distinctive thought and behavior. Langerian mindfulness and optimal sport performance. Health and the psychology of possibility. Critical Mindfulness is bracing and insightful reading for undergraduate and graduate students, psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians, clinicians, neurologists, and educators within and outside positive psychology. These pages challenge the wider community of professionals to rethink their perspectives on practice—as well as their long-held tenets of living.

The exploration, use, and exploitation of space resources is the most exciting chapter among today's issues of concern to the…

space community. At the same time, however, it has generated intense controversy at the international level, since current international and space law do not seem to ensure a stable, clear regime for such activities to take place. Furthermore, some legislative approaches at the national level, which have seen the light of day, do not seem capable of ensuring a universally acceptable solution. It could therefore be said that the question of how the governance of space resources in general should ideally be regulated remains, for the time being, unresolved. This book thoroughly reviews the relevant international experience and explores why current international law is at an impasse on the issue of space resources. Further, it discusses the possible ways out in the legal field and proposes solutions, some of which have not been presently discussed.

The Free Market is a fundamental building block, a precondition of a free society. Increasingly, we are witnessing monopolistic and…

competitive monopolistic behavior, and a growing government intervention in the market, e.g., taxes, subsidies, tariffs, and rules and regulations. Such interventions, along with unexpected exogenous shocks, affect the prices and the costs of goods and services. This book provides a simple methodology to examine the deviations from Perfect Competition equilibrium condition, where the price level is set equal to the marginal cost.It opens with an exploration of the concept of the free market, highlighting its foundational principles of unrestricted exchange of goods and services. It argues that, in addition to various exogenous shocks, government intervention such as regulations and policies, can impede this freedom, and sets out to measure the deviation from perfect competition equilibrium condition. The book empirically tests time series data of a sample of 45 countries and 22 industries and manufacturers in the US, the EU, Germany and Japan to inform policymakers of how far the economy, or an industry is moving away from Perfect Competition, and in which direction. The book addresses a topic of significant contemporary interest, making it timely and relevant. The inclusion of clear, data-driven conclusions further enhances its value as a resource for understanding the actual functioning of markets in today's global economy. Its broad applicability, touching on both macroeconomic and microeconomic theories, ensures that it will be relevant to a wide, international audience, including academics, policymakers, and professionals in finance and economics.

This book presents experiences that enable economic growth with more well-being, and better environmental qualities within framework of Sustainable Development…

Goals. Authoritative statistical data on economic, social, and environmental indicators in all countries are used, with particular attention to the most populated countries. It is shown that the radical economic ideas of neo-liberalism and degrowth fail to achieve their own objectives, while sustainable innovations generate continuous improvements with promising results. Sustainable development is driven by growing services and innovations dedicated to better uses of the natural resources and pollution prevention in all countries. Larger leisure time and knowledge work generate demands for sustainable innovations. While the global changes are slow, a few dozen countries have improved income, well-being, and environmental qualities due to moderate economic growth, capable population and democratic governances. Therefore, the shareholder greed for quick results, which generates cheap junk, can be turned toward valuable labour for quality services. This is demanded by consumers when supported by policies. Experiences of the past decades illustrate that many Sustainable Development Goals can be reached within the next generation if higher value, labour-intensive services and sustainable innovations are delivered. Policies can support this process.

Four Shots in the Night is the story of a political murder: the killing of an IRA member turned British informant. …

The search for justice for this one man's death—his body found in broad daylight, with tape over his eyes, an undisguised hit—would deliver more than the truth. It exposed his status as an informant and led to protests, campaigns, far-reaching changes to British law, a historic ruling from a senior judicial body, a ground-breaking police investigation, and bitter condemnation from a US Congressional commission. And there have been persistent rumors that one of the country&’s most senior politicians, the Sinn Fein leader Martin McGuinness, might have been personally involved in this particular murder. Relying on archival research, interviews, and the findings of a new complete police investigation, Four Shots in the Night tells a riveting story not just of this murder but of his role in the decades-long conflict that defined him--the Troubles. And the questions it tackles are even larger: how did the Troubles really come to an end? Was it a feat of diplomatic negotiation, as we've been told--or did spies play the decisive role? And how far can, or should, a spy go, for the good of his country? Four Shots in the Night is a page-turner that will make you think.

The fragments of the plastics smaller than 5 mm are called microplastics. These are widely distributed contaminants in aquatic, terrestrial,…

and aerial environments. Microplastics are released into the environment due to the extensive use of plastics and microplastics for various purposes, such as mulching, commercial organic fertiliser, and cosmetics. In addition, microplastics are also released from industries like polymer, textiles, and transport industries. The mismanagement of plastic garbage also builds up in the environment and releases microplastics. Microplastics not only act as contaminants but also act as vectors for numerous harmful chemical and biological pollutants, such as heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, and pathogens, which have been linked to detrimental effects on the health of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The present book will discuss the research carried out by the great scientific community working in the field of microplastic pollution in the soil, air, and water, as well as their potential remediation strategies. The readers would be able to find a loop between the significant sources of microplastic pollution, their impact on the biosphere, and solutions in one place.

Gregory Camp shows that the choice and use of music in Disney theme parks is very much grounded in Disney’s…

experience with storytelling on film and television, and that Disney’s musical storytelling in the parks is built upon the concept of nostalgia.Camp illustrates how the instrumentation and composition of the music impacts audience experience and shapes perceptions. The book is an essential guide for anyone seeking to understand the intricate interplay between music and narrative nostalgia. Ever since its founding in 1923, the Disney Company has foregrounded music in its storytelling in film, television, and live entertainment. Music was important at Disneyland from its opening day on 17 July 1955, when a widely viewed television broadcast included many musical performances of the type guests could hear in the parks. Since then, as Disneyland has expanded and the company has opened many more parks all around the world, music has remained fundamental to how the parks’ designers (Imagineers) tell their stories. The book will be of interest to musicologists and those working in film studies, as well as those from the wider Disney scholarship community, who come from urbanism, fandom studies, and various other branches of sociology and ethnography, as well as to others who study various aspects of music’s role in live and virtual spaces and places.

Algorithms and artificial intelligence increasingly drive our lives, cognitive inputs supplant physical inputs in the workplace, and big philanthropies rather…

than governments tackle many societal problems. To examine any one of these interrelated trends alone is to miss a seismic shift in world order. By homing in on the confluence of algorithmic capitalism, cognitive capitalism, and philanthropic capitalism, this tightly argued book offers a novel interpretation of an unnoticed and understudied transformation. The three forces form a trialectic, a system that lacks effective controls and is spreading globally. Conducted on four continents, the research shows how runaway capitalism is making work and daily life ever-more precarious and sparking anti-precarity movements. Tracing these metamorphoses both in the global North and global South, the author identifies plausible scenarios for blunting the sharp edges of runaway capitalism.Based on hard empirical data and qualitative case studies in the global North and South, Runaway Capitalism is aimed at a wide readership. Written in vivid prose, it is appropriate for university students, researchers, policy intellectuals, and a general audience interested in how to address major perils in geopolitics and economics.
