Accessible, student-friendly textbook on a core subject in undergraduate physics courses, updated with more worked examples, exercises, and everyday problems…

Emphasizing physical principles rather than mathematics, Vibrations and Waves, 2nd edition delivers a comprehensive and logical overview of the subject. Each topic begins with a discussion of the physical characteristics of the motion or system. The mathematics is kept as clear as possible and includes elegant mathematical descriptions where appropriate. This book features many worked examples, frequently drawn from everyday life (e.g., why microwave ovens typically have rotating turntables), along with more cutting-edge ones. Each chapter includes problems ranging in difficulty from simple to challenging and provides hints for solving problems. This new edition has been updated with even more worked examples, exercises, and relations to everyday problems. Vibrations and Waves discusses sample topics including: Simple harmonic motion, covering displacement, velocity, acceleration, and the physics of small vibrationsThe damped harmonic oscillator, covering light, leavy, and critical damping in its equation of motionTraveling waves, covering the transport of energy by a wave, waves at discontinuities, and waves in two and three dimensionsThe dispersion of waves, covering phase and group velocities and the superposition of waves in non-dispersive mediaInterference and diffraction of waves, covering Young’s double-slit experiment and the Michelonson spectral interferometer Vibrations and Waves is an essential textbook for all readers learning about waves and vibrations for the first time, either on their own or through an undergraduate or advanced undergraduate course.

In this book, the renowned philosopher and polymath Alain Badiou tells the story of the first five decades of his…

life, from 1937 to 1985, setting it within the political history of the twentieth century. Born in Morocco on the eve of catastrophic conflict, Badiou’s childhood and youth were marked by the Second World War and the Algerian War, experiences that would shape his political consciousness.  Badiou honed his political convictions as an activist and organizer among students and workers and in solidarity with the Algerian independence movement, but his life was upended and transformed by May ’68 in ways that were profoundly consequential for his philosophical thought.  By weaving his philosophical ideas into the narrative of his life, we see how the concepts for which Badiou is well-known – such as subject, being, event and truth – operate in the domain of experience and history.  Written in an engaging and often playful style, this book illuminates both the unique trajectory of a major philosopher and the turbulent history of the twentieth century, showing how the latter shaped the thinking of a man who has come to embody the very idea of political commitment and radical political thought.

A brilliant virtuoso of violence, Richard Marcinko rose through Navy ranks to create and command one of this country's most…

elite and classified counterterrorist units, SEAL TEAM SIX. Now this thirty-year veteran recounts the secret missions and Special Warfare madness of his worldwide military career—and the riveting truth about the top-secret Navy SEALs.Marcinko was almost inhumanly tough, and proved it on hair-raising missions across Vietnam and a war-torn world: blowing up supply junks, charging through minefields, jumping at 19,000 feet with a chute that wouldn't open, fighting hand-to-hand in a hellhole jungle. For the Pentagon, he organized the Navy's first counterterrorist unit: the legendary SEAL TEAM SIX, which went on classified missions from Central America to the Middle East, the North Sea, Africa and beyond. Then Marcinko was tapped to create Red Cell, a dirty-dozen team of the military's most accomplished and decorated counterterrorists. Their unbelievable job was to test the defenses of the Navy's most secure facilities and installations. The result was predictable: all hell broke loose. Here is the hero who saw beyond the blood to ultimate justice—and the decorated warrior who became such a maverick that the Navy brass wanted his head on a pole, and for a time, got it. Richard Marcinko—ROGUE WARRIOR.

Jordan is determined to preserve the history of her family&’s inn, particularly as the rest of her life is in shambles. When that determination turns into some light sabotage to ruffle Astrid&’s perfect little feathers, the showrunners ask them to play up the tension. But somewhere along the way, their dislike for each other evolves into something quite different, and Astrid must decide what success truly means. Is she going to pursue the life that she&’s expected to lead or the one that she wants?

This book uses cultural and psycho-social analysis to examine the beat writer Charles Bukowski and his literature, focusing on representations…

of the anti-hero rebel and outsider. Clements considers the complexities, ambiguities, and contradictions represented by the author and his work, exploring Bukowski’s visceral writing of the cultural ordinary and everyday self-narrative. The study considers Bukowski’s apolitical, gendered, and working-class stance to understand how the writer represents reality and is represented with regards to counter-cultural literature. In addition, Clements provides a broader socio-cultural focus that evaluates counterculture in relation to the American beat movement and mythology, highlighting the male cool anti-hero. The cultural practices and discourses utilized to situate Bukowski include the individual and society, outsiderdom, cult celebrity, fan embodiment, and disneyfication, providing a greater understanding of the beat generation and counterculture literature.

In books such as The Complete Walker and The Man Who Walked Through Time, Colin Fletcher has established a reputation…

as a literate and witty apostle of roughing it. His newest book is a highly personal celebration of solitary backpacking (and day walking, too), in the wild places of the world, and of all the attendant pleasures: of finding a foothold in difficult terrain, of catching a glimpse of an unsuspecting coyote, of healing the wounds that civilization inevitably inflicts on human nature --of simply "mucking about." Overflowing with fresh descriptions of nature and with the wisdom of a curmudgeonly Thoreau, this book is a must for backpackers and all unconstrained spirits.

The glorious novel from the beloved author whose bright, hopelessly romantic New York Times bestsellers have been called “My perfect…

10 of a book” (Emily Henry) and cheered for their “speedy pacing and sexual tension for miles” (People).Love may be blind. But what if . . . what you see isn't what you get? It’s all starting to come together for struggling artist Sadie Montgomery. She was just named a finalist in the national portrait competition of her dreams. But when she winds up with a rare, but real, condition where human faces look like jumbled puzzle pieces . . . it is, to say the least, not good. With only a few weeks to paint the best portrait of her entire life, Sadie will do anything to reverse her condition and get back to work, but it’s anyone’s guess when (or even if) that'll happen.Enter her dog’s charming veterinarian (who may or may not be Sadie’s daydream fiancé), and her bowling-jacket-wearing, Vespa-riding neighbor (who she can’t seem to stay away from)—both vying for her attention and adding to the chaos. It’s a lot, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. Because the truth is, seeing the world differently has its upsides. And love has an undeniable way of giving us courage. And the best way of looking is always, always with the heart. "With its emphasis on its central character, combined with its “swoony” romance, “Hello Stranger” is a hit. Sadie is everything you could want in a protagonist — the right amount of quirky, sunshiney and stubborn, and the men she’s in love with are equally fascinating. All the side characters provide humor and comfort, and even those characters who you aren’t really supposed to like are annoyingly intriguing and captivating. Center created a brilliant cast of characters, set to a plot that’s sure to keep you reading." --Michigan Daily
