Languages, Compilers, Analysis - From Beautiful Theory to Useful Practice: Essays Dedicated to Alan Mycroft on the Occasion of His Retirement (Lecture Notes in Computer Science #15500)
Par Dominic Orchard, Tomas Petricek, Jeremy Singer. 2026
This Festschrift is dedicated to Alan Mycroft who formally retired from the University of Cambridge after almost 40 years. Following…
a BA in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge in 1977, Alan took the Diploma in Computer Science in 1978. He then completed a PhD in Edinburgh in 1981 on Abstract Interpretation and Optimising Transformations for Applicative Programs under the supervision of Rod Burstall and Robin Milner. After an EPSRC postdoctoral fellowship at Edinburgh and a research assistant position at Chalmers University, he returned to the University of Cambridge in 1984 and remained there until his retirement in 2023. Alan is well-known for pioneering contributions to programming language theory and applications, covering both design and implementation. His work ranges from compilation and optimisation techniques, through semantics, static analysis, and type systems, to parallel, concurrent, and dataflow programming. He co-created the Norcroft C compiler with Arthur Norman, he co-authored the book Java 8 in Action: Lambdas, Streams, and Functional-Style Programming, and he co-founded the Raspberry Pi Foundation, a hugely successful initiative to develop programming skills and thinking for all ages. In addition to his excellent research profile, Alan has been an inspiring teacher, mentor, and collaborator, always generous with encouragement and feedback. The impact and scope of his career is reflected in the breadth of topics in this volume, a fitting tribute to him.
"The Normative Power of the EU and China: Interests Drive Norms is a vital contribution to the scholarship on global…
governance. It deftly dissects how both the EU and China pursue norm diffusion not as idealistic projects but as interest-driven strategies. The book provides a much-needed corrective to overly simplistic conceptions of 'normative power'." —Richard G. Whitman, Professor, School of Economics, Politics and International Relations, University of Kent, UK "Zhongzhou Peng has written a very welcome recent addition to the normative power approach literature. His balanced book seeks to understand how the normative power of China compares with the EU in global governance. The analysis compares and contrasts the EU and China to provide an interesting new take on how direct diffusion is driven by different interests rather than normative concerns." —Ian Manners, Professor, Department of Political Science, Lund University, Sweden This book systematically examines how the EU and China exercise their normative power in global governance, and how they interact with each other in the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the Paris Agreement, and the United Nations Human Rights Council. It demonstrates that the interests of the EU and China constitute a predominant factor that shapes their norm interpretation, norm diffusion, and outcomes of norm diffusion. The book makes the case that international norms represent a deal that fulfils the interests of actors that exercise normative power in international institutions. These findings make important theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on normative power, EU-China relationship, and global governance.
Australian classrooms are among the most linguistically diverse in the world, with more than 350 languages spoken across the nation.…
Yet, despite this rich reality, schools continue to be shaped by the enduring dominance of English monolingualism. Translanguaging in Australian Classrooms calls for a fundamental rethinking of teacher education, curriculum, and pedagogy to better reflect and harness the plurilingual repertoires of today&’s learners. At the heart of this book is the concept of Plurilingual Pedagogical Knowledge (PPK), a transformative framework that equips teachers to move beyond traditional literacy models and to value, mobilise, and affirm students&’ full communicative resources. Drawing on practitioner inquiry and richly detailed case studies, the book demonstrates how translanguaging can be enacted across subject areas, from mathematics and science to social studies and the arts. Challenging entrenched language ideologies, this volume positions teachers as agents of linguistic equity, capable of designing inclusive classrooms that support both academic success and cultural identity. It offers a compelling vision for teacher education in Australia, one that places linguistic justice at the centre of professional practice and reimagines the future of schooling through the dynamic possibilities of plurilingualism.
Leadership in Neurodiversity and Neurodivergence: Cases, Best Practices and Recommendations for Leaders and Organizations (Diversity and Inclusion Research)
Par Marc Helmold, Malte Martensen. 2025
This book explores neurodiversity and neurodivergence in the workplace from a practical perspective. There are estimates and surveys that assume…
15 to 20 percent of all employees are neurodivergent, including people with attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit-hyperactive disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, dyscalculia, and autism. In contrast to neurotypical people, they have a different way of absorbing and processing information or expressing feelings than the majority, presenting challenges for traditional corporate management for employees, managers, and organizations. In this book, the authors examine ways in which organizations can attract, recruit, and engage neurodiverse talent, and provide guidance on how to adapt human resource practices and processes to ensure that all employees can reach their full potential. It describes the forms of neurodiversity and how optimal collaborations can work successfully. Featuring cases, work aides, and best practices, this book helps leaders and organizations to use neurodiversity as competitive advantage to significantly increase productivity, teamwork and employee retention.

This book focuses on collecting some of the best results with the goal, dealing with the important and efficient combination…
of mathematics and computational intelligence, with a stress of fuzzy systems, and fuzzy logic. Artificial intelligence appears nowadays very much in the media, and also in the practice. In addition, every day, thousands of automatic intelligent systems for decision making are designed and applied around the world. In their design, many advanced techniques based on mathematics and computational intelligence are considered and used. Therefore, it is fundamental to continuously work on novel approaches in these areas and research models and algorithms with foundation in the mutual relationship of these two fields. Naturally, an important part of this issue focuses on the applications of these both areas, taking a special interest in the development and application of mathematics, artificial intelligence, and automatic reasoning tools applicable to Digital Forensics, also following the main objective of the COST Action DigForASP-CA17124.
Municipal Tasks and Financing: An Urban-Rural Perspective (Local and Urban Governance)
Par Karl Kössler, Francisco Velasco Caballero, Martin Burgi. 2026
This an Open access book. It provides a comparative and multidisciplinary analysis of how local governments perform their tasks and…
how these are financed. The volume stands out with three essential features. First, the comparative research reflected in the volume has a global geographical scope because it is the outcome of a Horizon 2020 project involving 18 partners from six continents. Therefore, it includes highly topical and so far under-researched case studies beyond just the European continent. Secondly, we look at the above-mentioned topics from a timely urban-rural perspective, as the ultimate aim is to explore the impact of the phenomenon of urbanisation on local governments and the response of urban and rural municipalities. Thirdly, the book focuses within broader research on municipal tasks and finances on several specific topics that have been revealed by our project as particularly relevant. These are public transport policies of urban and rural local governments, different ways of public service provision like PPP and public enterprises, financial equalization between urban and rural municipalities, as well as special fees as alternative sources of local revenue.
This book begins by tracing the evolution of energy systems—from traditional fossil fuels to the rise of land-based renewables—and highlights…
the spatial and societal pressures that hinder further terrestrial expansion. It then introduces the ocean as a promising frontier for renewable energy generation. The core of the book is structured into four main chapters, each dedicated to a key marine renewable energy type: offshore wind turbines, wave energy converters, tidal energy converters, and floating solar farms. Each chapter explores the fundamental principles, system components, design considerations, and challenges unique to ocean environments. The final chapters examine emerging future directions, including hybrid renewable systems, offshore hydrogen production, clean fuels and maritime decarbonization, and the role of digital technologies in offshore system monitoring, management and maintenance.
Dialectics as Mode of Thought and Method in History (Perspectives in Cultural-Historical Research #14)
Par Manolis Dafermos. 2025
This book provides a thorough and panoramic exploration of dialectics, presenting it as both a mode of thought and a…
method of inquiry deeply embedded in the history of human thought. Rather than treating dialectics as a fixed system of abstract principles, the book underscores both its dynamic character and its historical development. Through careful examination of pivotal moments in dialectics across diverse historical periods and intellectual traditions, the book illuminates how dialectics has continually evolved to address the pressing intellectual and social challenges of each era. By tracing the historical trajectory of dialectics from its ancient, spontaneous forms to its modern expressions, the book highlights the significant transformations it has undergone over time. The book also addresses the growing crisis in many fields dominated by reductionist and narrowly empirical approaches, which have proved inadequate for capturing the complexity and dynamism of developmental processes. In response, it points to a resurgence of interest in dialectics as a powerful methodological alternative. A central claim of the book is that the full potential of dialectics remains largely unrealised. Far from being an obsolete relic of the past, dialectics emerges as an essential method, particularly for the study of complex, dynamic systems. Ultimately, the book reconstructs the historical trajectory of dialectics and advocates its vital role in confronting the epistemological and methodological challenges of contemporary inquiry in an ever-changing world.
Technologies in Palliative Care for Older People (Synthesis Lectures on Technology and Health)
Par Amara Callistus Nwosu, Sarah Stanley, James Norris, Mark Taubert. 2026
This book provides a comprehensive overview of palliative care digital health by covering current developments, methodology, clinical relevance, research priorities,…
ethical issues, and policy related to technological innovations for those with serious illness. This type of book does not currently exist in the literature, as previous work primarily focuses on digital health for early identification of disease and facilitating self-care or &‘aging in place&’ practices. This book addresses the lack of focus on digital health for people with palliative care needs. This book has a special focus on the needs of individuals as their health worsens throughout their illness. Consequently, the reader will benefit from this book&’s focus on the science, methodology, application, and practicality of digital health developments in palliative care. This book explores the barriers that prevent the meaningful use of digital health in palliative care, including expenses, interoperability issues, data privacy and security concerns, lack of effectiveness and equity, and the concern that technology may reduce face-to-face consultations between patients and clinicians. There is an overall lack of consensus about digital health research priorities in palliative care, and a lack of theories about how these technologies might improve care outcomes. Therefore, this book emphasizes the importance of identifying, discussing, and debating how technological innovations can be meaningfully used to ensure that frail people have appropriate access to palliative care services. Consequently, this book begins the conversation about articulating digital health research priorities in palliative care to determine how finite resources should be allocated to a field saturated with rapidly developing innovation.

Remember Love: Words for Tender Times
Par Cleo Wade. 2025

we can find light in periods of lostness, love for ourselves after heartbreak, okay-ness in the midst of change, and strength in letting go. How do we find steadiness within ourselves in the midst of dizzying personal and global change? At a time when many of us feel overwhelmed by fear and isolation, Cleo Wade&’s Remember Love offers intimate, uplifting words that anchor, nurture, and make us feel less alone. She shares that the heart work we do for ourselves is not done to avoid the tough stuff—periods of lostness, self-doubt, depression, grief, heartbreak, and anxiety. Wade instead suggests that to live is to get lost, and it&’s our task, our great privilege, to learn to love ourselves so that we can handle these periods and our discomfort does not block our healing. Remember Love reminds us that lostness is not our permanent state but a starting point for self-discovery, connection, and growth.
Live Long and Prosper: How Black Megachurches Address HIV/AIDS and Poverty in the Age of Prosperity Theology
Par Sandra L. Barnes. 2012
This pioneering new study of the Black megachurch phenomenon brings nuance and depth to the question, Are Black megachurches more…
focused on prosperity than on people?Black megachurches and their pastors are often accused of failing to use their considerable resources to help the poor; focusing on prosperity theology rather than on social justice; requiring excessive monetary and time commitments of members; and pilfering church coffers for the their personal use. The debate rages on aboutwhether these congregations are doing all they can to address specific challenges facing African American communities. Live Long and Prosper is a refreshing, innovative study that reaches beyond superficial understandings of the Black megachurch phenomenon in a piercing interrogation of how powerful megachurches address (or fail to address) two social crises in the Black community: HIV/AIDS andpoverty.Live Long and Prosper offers an intriguing examination of sixteen representative Black megachurches and explores some of their motivations and subsequent programmatic efforts in light of prosperity or “health and wealth” theology. Professor Barnes makes the case that the Black megachurch is a complex, contemporary model of the historic Black church in response to globalism, consumerism, secularism, religious syncretism, and the realities of race. She contends that many of these megachurches hold unique characteristics of adaptability and innovation that position them well to tackle difficult social issues. Prosperity theology emphasizes two characteristics—physical health and economic wealth—as examples of godly living and faith. This book considers whether and how efforts to address HIV/AIDS (a “health” issue) and poverty (a “wealth” issue) are influenced by church and clergy profiles; theology, in general; and prosperity theology, in particular. Frame analysis informs this mixed-methodological study to compare and contrast experiences, theological beliefs, pastoral profiles, and programs.Live Long and Prosper is a must-read for general readers, academics, and students alike—indeed, anyone interested in the contemporary Black megachurch’s response to social problems and the link between theology and social action. It is at once a fascinating, readable narrative and a rich piece of scholarship complete withextensively documented endnotes, statistics, informative charts and tables, and an exhaustive bibliography.
