Reviving Jewish Theology: Metaphysics, Hermeneutics, Ethics
By Steven Kepnes. 2025
In this study, Steven Kepnes constructs a 'positive' Jewish theology, one that gives expression to God's nature and powers and…
that opposes 'apophatic' Holocaust and postmodern theologies that deny the ability of language to express God's nature. Drawing from the Pentateuch, Prophets, and Jewish prayer, Kepnes also uses methods from medieval philosophy, analytic philosophy, and hermeneutics. From medieval philosophy and the Bible, Kepnes develops what he calls a 'soft' metaphysics with principles of God and the revealed Torah at its center. Identifying a fundamental contradiction between the transcendent God of philosophy and the personal God of the Bible, he demonstrates how analytic philosophy, Jewish hermeneutics, and Jewish liturgy offer constructive strategies to negotiate this contradiction. Kepnes also argues that Jewish theology can neither remain in the domain of metaphysics nor the nature of God, but must turn toward the practical and ethical. He concludes with a call for a prophetic theological ethics to address the pressing issue of climate change.

Delivery Man: The Enemy-Alien Nisei Translator Who Saved his Battalion
By Rory Laverty. 2025
The American battalion was trapped, under siege and under fire, and one man was their best, last hope.Delivery Man: The…
Enemy-Alien Nisei Translator Who Saved His Battalion in World War II is the suspenseful, tragic, and true story of a combat translator in a pioneering American special operations force, sent into the heart of a forgotten jungle war in which he fought soldiers of his own ancestry and put his life on the line to save hundreds of his brothers.U.S. Army Sgt. Roy Matsumoto was born in Los Angeles and lived for seven years in Hiroshima. His family remained in Japan in 1929, when he returned to Southern California alone and took a job delivering groceries. Like all Japanese Americans, Roy&’s life was upended by Japan&’s attack on Pearl Harbor, followed by his internment by his own country – first at the Los Angeles horse-racing track on which Sea Biscuit had triumphed two years before, and then at another concentration camp in Arkansas. In exchange for his freedom, Roy volunteered to join the US Army, which trained him and sent him into northern Burma. That&’s where the American commando force known as Merrill&’s Marauders braved a malarial jungle to engage a tenacious enemy force on a winning streak. In Delivery Man, Rory Laverty masterfully chronicles the unforgettable story of Roy Matsumoto, an unsung American hero fighting in an overlooked American theater of World War II.
Everyday Occupation: American Soldiers and Chinese Civilians after World War II
By Chunmei Du. 2026
'In this rich history of everyday encounters between US soldiers and Chinese civilians, Chunmei Du explores their entangled relations from…
the end of World War II to the founding of the People's Republic of China. Drawing upon official, popular and personal accounts from both countries, Du examines the sensorial, material, and symbolic exchanges that took place between GIs and ordinary Chinese people-stall vendors, pedestrians, rickshaw pullers, 'Jeep girls,' and suspected thieves. Through the conceptual lens of the everyday, this book reveals how interactions such as traffic accidents, sexual relations, theft, and black-market dealings, impacted larger political dynamics during this pivotal era. Du shows how mundane struggles made imperialism and sovereignty tangible, fueling anti-American sentiment. Meanwhile, these encounters fostered informal diplomacy, shaping identities and forging new bonds that left a lasting imprint on both countries. Science Under the Yoke of Value: A Phenomenological Inquiry into the Evaluation Machinery
By Ivo De Gennaro, Maurizio Borghi, Gino Zaccaria. 2026
Science Under the Yoke of Value examines how science today is fundamentally governed not by an autonomous quest for knowledge…
and truth, or by the advancement of society, but by coercion to cater to a machinery that feeds on, and in its turn produces, self‑implicating values of “quality”, “impact”, or “productivity”, with disruptive consequences for scientific life as a whole.Drawing on phenomenological analysis and the insights of thinkers like Plato, Aristotle, Galilei, Kant, Husserl, Einstein, Heidegger, and Arendt, this book exposes how scholarly pursuits worldwide have become subjugated by non‑scientific values. It challenges the uncritical acceptance of evaluation practices that threaten to transform academia into a self‑perpetuating system where scholars labour under what the authors aptly term “the yoke of value”. Readers will gain profound insights into the philosophical underpinnings of academic evaluation, moving beyond common discussions of “bureaucratization” or “corporatization” to question the very concept of value that drives these systems. This book uniquely interrogates why enormous resources are devoted to evaluation systems without examining whether these values truly serve science or society, thereby diverting attention from the true menace to present‑day scientific enquiry. This critical analysis helps scholars understand the mechanisms that “magically” prevent questioning of the system itself, offering a framework to recognize how scientific autonomy has been compromised and what this means for the advancement of knowledge. This volume will appeal to STEM scholars, philosophers, and social scientists alike, interested in scientific integrity and the autonomy of research. University administrators, policymakers, and anyone concerned with the purposes and trajectory of scientific research in contemporary society will find this analysis essential for understanding the current crisis in scientific and academic life. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license
Professional Learning for Diversity, Equity and Democracy: Big Ideas for Better Schools
By Manuela Heinz, María Jesús Rodríguez-Entrena, Gerry Mac Ruairc. 2026
This edited volume examines research and practical examples of professional learning approaches for school leaders and teachers in the areas…
of diversity, equity and democracy – ‘big issues’ that represent some of the most urgent challenges facing our societies and schools today.Educators from Ireland, Poland, Spain, Norway and Chile provide unique insights into professional learning programmes that were intentionally and collaboratively designed and put into action with and for school leaders, teachers and teacher educators. A key principle promoted throughout this book is the commitment to placing individuals, communities and context at the centre. All programmes emphasise the creation of new spaces, where lived experiences, evolving ideas and theoretical frameworks can be explored with honesty, critical depth and moral purpose. They prioritise transformative practice and outcomes through learning together, rather than through mere implementation or replication of programmes or policies. In offering summaries and critical discussions of key theoretical perspectives, learning materials and thinking points, and ultimately a shared sense of solidarity in the ongoing work of shaping transformative educational change, this book will be useful for school leaders, teachers, teacher educators, teacher professional development providers and policymakers working in the areas of diversity, equity and democracy.

Buryat Intellectuals in Empire and Revolution (Central Asia Research Forum)
By Melissa Chakars, Nikolay Tsyrempilov. 2026
This book takes a deeper look at the history of the Russian Empire and the USSR from the perspective of…
ethno-national minorities. It focuses on Buryat intellectuals who traveled and worked across Eurasia, sometimes crossing international borders into Europe, China, Mongolia, and Tibet. The chapters cover a wide geographic space and address broad themes such as nationalism, identity, modernity, Buddhism, Marxism, education, cultural institutions, language, imperialism, political transition, cultural change, and the consequences of economic and social development. Buryat intellectuals occupied prominent positions in political, cultural, and religious spheres during the late Russian Empire and the early years of the USSR, an intense period of Russification, Christianization, colonization, and modernization. Using unique primary sources, the contributors investigate how Buryat intellectuals responded to these transformative forces. The book shows that they created narratives that drew upon their own history, Mongolian-Tibetan written culture, and the Russian-European intellectual tradition. These intellectuals— from diplomats to scholars to Buddhist lamas—grappled with questions about their identity and role in a rapidly changing Russian/Soviet state. Some focused on how to preserve their traditional culture, others sought to create experimental hybrid forms of identity, and others joined the process of creating a new socialist nation that rejected the past.A novel contribution to the literature on post-colonial/decolonial approaches to knowledge making, this book will be of interest to academics in the fields of history, Russian studies, Mongolian studies, Central Eurasian studies, as well as intellectual history.

Early Modern Bodies (Early Modern Themes)
By Sarah Toulalan. 2026
Early Modern Bodies is a wide-ranging and detailed introduction to a variety of different approaches to and perspectives on bodies…
in the early modern period, circa 1500–1750.The collection guides readers through an examination of bodies at every stage of life, from birth to death and the afterlife, as they are situated in different social, cultural, and geographical contexts. It considers the bodies of numerous potential identities, such as criminals, prostitutes, witches, soldiers, and non-conforming sexualities. Though its focus is primarily Western Europe, the volume also pays attention to the wider world, especially with respect to developing ideas about race and ‘other’ bodies in what has been dubbed an ‘age of exploration’. Chapters are also dedicated to analysing what it was to be human, how humankind was considered in relation to the natural world, and how those adhering to non-Christian faiths were thought about. This book is an accessible, essential text for students and established scholars alike who are interested in the history of the body, early modern history, and gender and sexuality.
