Ringmaster: Vince McMahon and the Unmaking of America
By Abraham Josephine Riesman. 2023
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER NPR&’s 2023 Books We Love &“Riveting, essential reading.&” —Rick Perlstein, author of Reaganland The definitive…
biography of Vince McMahon, former WWE chairman and CEO, charts his rise from rural poverty to the throne of one of the world&’s most influential media empires—and features never-before-seen research and exclusive interviews with more than 150 people who witnessed, aided, and suffered from his ascent.Even if you&’ve never watched a minute of professional wrestling, you are living in Vince McMahon&’s world. In his four decades as the defining figure of American pro wrestling, McMahon was the man behind Dwayne &“The Rock&” Johnson, &“Stone Cold&” Steve Austin, John Cena, Dave Bautista, Bret &“The Hitman&” Hart, and Hulk Hogan, to name just a few of the mega-stars who owe him their careers. For more than twenty-five years, he has also been a performer in his own show, acting as the diabolical &“Mr. McMahon&”—a figure who may have more in common with the real Vince than he would care to admit. Just as importantly, McMahon is one of Donald Trump&’s closest friends—and Trump&’s experiences as a performer in McMahon&’s programming were, in many ways, a dress rehearsal for the 45th President&’s campaigns and presidency. McMahon and his wife, Linda, are major Republican donors. Linda was in Trump&’s cabinet. McMahon makes deals with the Saudi government worth hundreds of millions of dollars. And for generations of people who have watched wrestling, he has been a defining cultural force. Accessible to anyone, regardless of wrestling knowledge, Ringmaster is an unauthorized, independent, investigative chronicle of Vince McMahon&’s origins and rise to supreme power. It is built on exclusive interviews with more than 150 people, from McMahon&’s childhood friends to those who accuse him of destroying their lives. Far more than just an athletics or entertainment biography, Ringmaster uses Vince&’s story as a new lens for understanding the contemporary American apocalypse.

The ricocheting bullets whined around the valley.&”On September 1, 1939, ten-year-old Paul Cieslar&’s peaceful childhood in the Polish countryside came to an end. German fighter planes roared overhead, and with them came the invasion of Poland and the chaos of war.In No Heil Hitler, Paul recounts his extraordinary true story of survival, faith, and quiet resistance in Nazi-occupied Poland. As Seventh-day Adventists, Paul&’s family refused to give the &“Heil Hitler&” salute or work on Saturday—their Sabbath. These simple acts of faith became bold defiance under the watchful eyes of the Gestapo.Through Paul&’s eyes, readers witness the fear, hunger, and moral choices that defined his formative years. In a time when conformity meant safety, the Cieslar family&’s courage to live by their beliefs stands as a powerful reminder of human resilience and spiritual conviction. With moments of terror, glimpses of grace, and an unwavering commitment to truth, No Heil Hitler is both a riveting wartime memoir and a testament to the strength of faith in the face of evil.&“Paul Cieslar&’s story is also that of his family and his church, one of faithfulness and endurance in the face of grave threats and many hardships in occupied Poland. Interplanetary Robots: True Stories of Space Exploration
By Rod Pyle. 2019
A NASA insider tells the exciting story of robotic space missions to explore the solar system. Exploring the planets has…
been a goal of America's space program since the dawn of the space race. This insider's perspective examines incredible missions of robotic spacecraft to every corner of our solar system and beyond. Some were flown into glory, while others were planned and relegated to dusty filing cabinets. All were remarkable in their aspirations. Award-winning science writer Rod Pyle profiles both the remarkable spacecraft and the amazing scientists and engineers who made them possible. From the earliest sprints past Venus and Mars to Voyager1's current explorations of the space between the stars, this exciting book sheds new light on ever-more ambitious journeys designed to increase the human reach into the solar system. Drawing on his perspective as a writer for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, ground zero for NASA's planetary exploration, the author further details plans now in development to look for signs of life on Jupiter's moon Europa, submarines that will dive into the hazy hydrocarbon lakes of Saturn's moon Titan, and intelligent spacecraft that will operate for months without human intervention on Mars and in the outer solar system well into the 2030s. Equally compelling are programs of exploration that were considered but never left the drawing board, such as automobile-sized biology laboratories designed for a Mars landing in the 1960s and plans to detonate atomic bombs on the moon. Complemented by many rarely-seen photos and illustrations, these stories of incredible engineering achievements, daring imaginations, and technological genius will fascinate and inspire.

"As Canadian as the maple leaf" is how one observer summed up the United Church of Canada after its founding…
in 1925. But was this Canadian-made church flawed in its design, as critics have charged? A Church with the Soul of a Nation explores this question by weaving together the history of the United Church with a provocative analysis of religion and cultural change.
What if psychology isn&’t as liberal as we think? Psychology is often seen as a progressive discipline — a champion…
of social justice, diversity, and liberal values. But this provocative book challenges that assumption. It argues that psychology, from its historical entanglements with eugenics and colonialism to its modern-day focus on individualism, has long served to reinforce the status quo. Even as many psychologists identify as politically liberal, the field&’s methods, theories, and institutions often promote a worldview that downplays inequality, pathologizes dissent, and resists structural change. Psychology&’s emphasis on personal responsibility, resilience, and self-help frequently aligns more closely with conservative ideals than with progressive ones. This book explores how the myth of a &“liberal bias&” in psychology has been weaponised in today&’s culture wars — and how it distracts from the field&’s real political blind spots. It asks: what would it mean for psychology to truly live up to its promise of promoting human welfare? Accessible, deeply researched, and sharply argued, Psychology&’s Quiet Conservatism is essential reading for anyone interested in how science shapes society — and how society shapes science.
Where the Sun Rises Square: Mass Incarceration and the Binds of Reform in Brazil
By David C. Thompson. 2026
Brazil's prison population, estimated at 90,000 in 1990, has exploded to over 650,000, the third highest in the world behind…
the US and China. Systematically targeting poor, Black communities, Brazil's prisons have become infamous for their overcrowding and mismanagement. And yet, this landscape of punishment is built on top of a set of progressive laws that center reform as the primary aim and concern of incarceration. Every morning, when black, windowless vans carry the newly incarcerated to their destinations, they pass through prison gates emblazoned with the words, "Resocialize to Conquer the Future." Through long-term fieldwork within the prisons of Rio de Janeiro, David Thompson investigates the legal and moral impulse to "resocialize" as it animates the prison system of Brazil. Following incarcerated people, psychologists, attorneys, and missionaries, he draws attention to the forms of prison life and governance that reform and resocialization bring forth, from parole applications and psycho-social evaluations to prison escapes. He argues these institutions are driven by a set of unfulfilled promises: the image of a reformed, future self; the insistence that a more "humane" prison is possible; the promise of Brazilian democracy itself; and the stalled project of Black emancipation. Across these domains, Thompson charts how imprisonment forces its captives to constantly navigate between the hope of reform and the weaponization of this hope against them.
Astrology for Christians: Astonishing Evidence from History and the Bible
By Suzan Stephan. 2019
Tracing the roots of astrology from Abraham through the life of Christ and the surrounding Roman Empire, this book provides…
astonishing evidence that astrology once held an essential position within early Christian beliefs and traditional monotheistic Hebrew culture. Powerful proofs from history and the Bible are examined, and the reasons behind the unfounded defamation of astrology by Roman church authorities are presented, finally legitimatizing astrology for Christians today. Applicable to the seasoned astrologer, yet easy to understand by those with little knowledge of astrology, detailed historical and astrological evidence behind the Star of Bethlehem, the biblical nature of wisdom, and the wise men are explored. Original horoscopes for King David and the eclipse preceding the birth of Jesus are described, with astounding implications for modern understanding. The final messages are clear: God is real. The story of Jesus Christ is real. The manifestation of God’s will is real, and nowhere in the Bible is there a condemnation of astrology.
The Puzzle Solver: A Scientist's Desperate Quest to Cure the Illness that Stole His Son
By Tracie White. 2021
A Father, His Son, and an Unrelenting Quest for a CureAt the age of twenty-seven, Whitney Dafoe was forced to…
give up his life as a photographer who traveled the world. Bit by bit a mysterious illness stole away the pieces of his life: First, it took the strength of his legs, then his voice, and his ability to eat. Finally, even the sound of a footstep in his room became unbearable. The Puzzle Solver follows several years in which he desperately sought answers from specialist after specialist, where at one point his 6'3" frame dropped to 115 lbs. For years, he underwent endless medical tests, but doctors told him there was nothing wrong. Then, finally, a diagnosis: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis. In the 80s, when an outbreak of people immobilized by an indescribable fatigue were reported near Lake Tahoe, Nevada, doctors were at a loss to explain the symptoms. The condition would alternatively be nicknamed Raggedy Ann Syndrome or the Yuppie Disease, and there was no cure or answers about treatment. They were to remain sick. But there was one answer: Whitney's father, Ron Davis, PhD, a world-class geneticist at Stanford University whose legendary research helped crack the code of DNA, suddenly changed the course of his career in a race against time to cure his son's debilitating condition. In The Puzzle Solver, journalist Tracie White, who first wrote a viral and award-winning piece on Davis and his family in Stanford Medicine, tells his story. In gripping prose, she masterfully takes readers along on this journey with Davis to solve one of the greatest mysteries in medicine. In a piercing investigative narrative, closed doors are opened, and masked truths are exposed as Davis uncovers new proof confirming that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a biological disease. At the heart of this book is a moving story that goes far beyond medicine, this is a story about how the power of love -- and science -- can shine light in even the darkest, most hidden, corners of the world.
Showdowns: The 20 Greatest Wrestling Rivalries of the Last Tw (WWE)
By Jeremy Roberts. 2008
Two decades of the top twenty fan favorites and the matches that made them famous. It starts with an insult...then comes…
a push, a shove...a betrayal. Before you know it, the two wrestlers are at each other's throats. It's a rivalry, it's personal...it's a showdown. Some showdowns are straightforward: John Cena wants to prove himself by taking on JBL; Randy Orton knows that if he can slay Undertaker, it will prove that he is the legend killer. Others are grudge matches -- The Rock is finally going to put Stone Cold Steve Austin, the bionic redneck, in his place. There are conflicts we can all identify with: Steve Austin doing to Mr. McMahon what we dream of doing to our boss every Monday morning. There are the epic showdowns that evoke the eternal struggle: Undertaker versus Kane. And the truly bizarre: Mankind against Shawn Michaels. Here for the first time ever, Jeremy Roberts (co-author of Controversy Creates Cash and Batista Unleashed) examines the top twenty rivalries of the past twenty years. Roberts takes us on a veritable tour of recent wrestling history, from Hulk Hogan's showdowns with Randy Savage to the gargantuan struggles between Undertaker and Batista. The high-flying action of the Hardy Boyz, the Dudleys, Edge & Christian -- all are examined in what amounts to a brief for the wrestlers' inclusion in the hall of fame. From the Monday Night Wars between nWo and D-Generation X to the real-life conflict that spawned Matt Hardy's memorable bloodfest with Edge, Roberts takes you into the ring so vividly you'll come away with bruises.
An exploration of early modern accounts of sickness and disability—and what they tell us about our own approach to bodily…
differenceIn our age of biomedicine, society often treats sickness and disability as problems in need of solution. Phenomena of embodied difference, however, have not always been seen in terms of lack and loss. Where Paralytics Walk and the Blind See explores the case of early modern Catholic Canada under French rule and shows it to be a period rich with alternative understandings of infirmity, disease, and death. Counternarratives to our contemporary assumptions, these early modern stories invite us to creatively imagine ways of living meaningfully with embodied difference today. At the heart of Dunn’s account are a range of historical sources: Jesuit stories of illness in New France, an account of Canada’s first hospital, the hagiographic vita of Catherine de Saint-Augustin, and tales of miraculous healings wrought by a dead Franciscan friar. In an early modern world that subscribed to a Christian view of salvation, both sickness and disability held significance for more than the body, opening opportunities for virtue, charity, and even redemption. Dunn demonstrates that when these reflections collide with modern thinking, the effect is a certain kind of freedom to reimagine what sickness and disability might mean to us.Reminding us that the meanings we make of embodied difference are historically conditioned, Where Paralytics Walk and the Blind See makes a forceful case for the role of history in broadening our imagination.
