In the twenty-first century, expecting parents are inundated with information and advice from every direction, but are often strapped for…
perspective on how to think through it. Unlike traditional pregnancy guidebooks that offer recommendations, Carrying On helps expecting parents make sense of the overwhelming amount of counsel available to them by shedding light on where it all came from. How and why did such confusing and contradictory guidance on pregnancy come to exist? Carrying On investigates the origin stories of prevailing prenatal health norms by exploring the evolution of issues at the center of pregnancy, ranging from morning sickness and weight gain to ultrasounds and induction. When did women start taking prenatal vitamins, and why? When did the notion that pregnant women should “eat for two” originate? Where did exercise guidelines come from? And when did women start formulating birth plans? A learning project with one foot in the past and the other in the present, Carrying On considers what history and medicine together can teach us about how and why we treat pregnancy–and pregnant women–the way we do. In a world of information overload, Carrying On offers expecting parents the context and background they need to approach pregnancy and prenatal health from a new place of understanding.
2022 NATIONAL INDIE EXCELLENCE AWARDS WINNER — LGBTQIA NONFICTION "The author offers an empowering perspective for people whose identities are…
often marginalized in the health and wellness industry." —Manhattan Book Review Become the healthiest and happiest version of yourself using wellness tools designed specifically for BIPOC and LGBTQ folks. The lack of BIPOC and LGBTQ representation in the fields of health and nutrition has led to repeated racist and unscientific biases that negatively impact the very people they purport to help. Many representatives of the increasingly popular body positivity movement actually add to the body image concerns of queer people of color by emphasizing cisgender, heteronormative, and Eurocentric standards of beauty. Few mainstream body positivity resources address the intersectional challenges of anti-Blackness, colorism, homophobia, transphobia, and generational trauma that are at the root of our struggles with wellness and self-care. In Decolonizing Wellness: A QTBIPOC-Centered Guide to Escape the Diet Trap, Heal Your Self-Image, and Achieve Body Liberation, registered dietitian and nutritionist Dalia Kinsey will help readers to improve their health without restriction, eliminate stress around food and eating, and turn food into a source of pleasure instead of shame. A road map to body acceptance and self-care for queer people of color, Decolonizing Wellness is filled with practical eating practices, journal prompts, affirmations, and mindfulness tools. Ultimately, decolonizing nutrition is essential not only to our personal well-being but to our community&’s well-being and to the possibility of greater social transformation. This is a body positivity and food freedom book for marginalized folks. It&’s a guide to throwing out food rules in exchange for internal cues and adopting a self-love-based approach to eating. It&’s about learning to trust our bodies and turning mealtime into a time for celebration and healing. It&’s also a love letter to those of us who struggle with our bodies and a gentle plea for us to do the work it takes to accept, trust, and love ourselves.
2022 NATIONAL INDIE EXCELLENCE AWARDS FINALIST — HEALTH: GENERAL &“It is exceptionally well organized and presented, making it an ideal…
and highly recommended addition to personal, community, college, and university library Health/Medicine collections.&” —Midwest Book Review Nature puts a &“survival switch&” in our bodies to protect us from starvation. Stuck in the &“on&” position, it&’s the hidden source of weight gain, heart disease, and many other common health struggles. But you can turn it off. Dr. Richard Johnson has been on the cutting edge of research into the cause of obesity for more than a decade. His team&’s discovery of the fructose-powered survival switch—a metabolic pathway that animals in nature turn on and off as needed, but that our modern diet has permanently fixed in the &“on&” position, where it becomes a fat switch—revolutionized the way we think about why we gain weight. In Nature Wants Us to Be Fat, he details the mounting evidence on how this switch is responsible both for excess fat storage and for many of the major diseases endemic to the Western world, including heart disease, cancer, and dementia. Dr. Johnson also reveals the surprising link between the survival switch and health conditions such as gout, kidney disease, liver disease, stroke—and even behavioral issues like addiction and ADHD. And, most important, he shares a science-based plan to help readers fight back against nature. Guided by ongoing clinical research—plus fascinating observations from the animal kingdom, evolution, and history—Dr. Johnson takes you along on an eye-opening investigation into: What you can do to turn off your survival switch What we have in common with hibernating bears, sperm whales, and the world&’s fattest bird Why it&’s fructose (not glucose) that drives insulin resistance and metabolic disease The foods we eat that trigger the body to make its own fructose The surprising role salt and dehydration play in fat accumulation The surprising link between the survival switch and health conditions such as gout and liver and kidney diseases, and even behavioral issues like addiction and ADHD Dr. Johnson not only provides new recommendations for how we can prevent or treat obesity, but also how we can use this information to reduce our risk of developing disease. Nature wants us to be fat, and when we understand why, we gain the tools we need to lose weight and optimize our health.

A Celebration of Family: Stories of Parents with Disabilities
By Dave Matheis. 2021
“A Celebration of Family: Stories of Parents with Disabilities” contains the stories of thirty families. In every family, one or…
both parents have disabilities: physical, mental, sensory, and/or intellectual. The stories illustrate the infinite variety of the American family. It is that variety that gives the family both its strength and its beauty. Like individuals, no two families are the same. In the course of discussing their family experiences, the parents cover a number of topics. Most stories concern having children through birth, but there are also stories about fostering and adopting. Four stories concern single parenthood. Many parents talk about adaptations and accommodations they made to be effective parents, but even more talk about how wonderfully adaptive their children were to their disabilities. Many parents talk about individual discrimination and societal bias they have faced. A number of stories highlight the decision-making process to have children when the possibility exists of passing on an inheritable condition. Parents are included that had children before they acquired a disability and they relate how that acquired disability affected their family. Several stories discuss legal and policy issues around parenting with a disability. The stories contain humor, compassion, and gratitude. They are proof that one thing you can get any parent to talk about is their children. As one parent in the book puts it, “if you suck as a person, you are going to suck as a parent, whether you have a disability or not. If you are compassionate and caring and nurturing as a person, you will be like that as a parent, too.

our body’s built-in systems for healing and introducing a new program that offers a perpetual inner core of wellness and adaptability.Dr. Eric Goodman’s innovative approach to self-healing—Foundation Training—has helped athletes, first responders, celebrities, and regular folks around the world. The heart of Foundation Training is a unique form of biomechanics—a series of postures, poses, and movements designed to teach the body’s individual muscles to act within strong, flexible chains, shifting the burden of support away from sensitive joints.Foundations of Health builds on this core program, going deep into its principles to help us understand how to maintain a healthy body, even when the mechanics eventually break down. Our bodies are built to heal themselves—without surgeries and prescriptive medications. The protocols expand on the original Foundation Training concepts, focusing on the endogenous cannabinoid stimulators—part of an extraordinary built-in endocannabinoid system that profoundly affects our central, enteric, and peripheral nervous systems and helps to regulate numerous responses in our body.Dr. Goodman explains the science behind the endogenous cannabinoid system and how it can be stimulated in natural and healthy ways, including heat, breath work, and movement—techniques that will help guide and maintain the state of balance the body needs to function optimally with stability and harmony. He recommends foods, herbs, and supplements likely to ease pain, lower stress, and boost mental and physical function. He addresses the notable medicinal benefits of CBD, THC, and the many terpenes associated with cannabis’s reputation for healing, and teaches how to be a smart consumer of cannabinoids.Foundations of Health provides a unique understanding and approach to healing that will forever change the way we think of our bodies and our physical health.
