Mayhem: Unanswered Questions about the Tsarnaev Brothers, the US Government and the Boston Marathon Bombing
By Michele R. McPhee. 2020
Mayhem goes a long way toward answering questions that still linger about the notorious Boston Marathon bombing, such as: Where…
were the bombs made? And what had been Tamerlan Tsarnaev's relationship to the FBI? This page-turning narrative casts a spotlight on the US Government's relationship with the older Tsarnaev brother as his younger brother, Dzhokhar, continues his efforts to have his death sentence commuted. The federal government may be forced to confirm a longstanding relationship with Tamerlan and its decision to shield him from investigation for the Sept. 11, 2011 ISIS-style triple murder of three friends. As they infamously did with Whitey Bulger, federal agents appear to have protected Tamerlan because of his value as a paid informant. Mayhem is a substantially revised and updated first paperback edition of Michele R. McPhee's earlier book about the bombing, Maximum Harm.Opportunity Knocks: How Hard Work, Community, and Business Can Improve Lives and End Poverty
By Senator Tim Scott. 2020
Senator Tim Scott knows adversity. As the son of a single mother from North Charleston, South Carolina, he struggled to…
get through school and had his dreams of a college football career shattered by a car wreck. But thanks to his mother and a few mentors along the way, he learned that "failure isn't failure unless you quit." He also learned that it's hard work and perseverance, not a government handout, that will get you ahead in life.Today, Senator Scott is the only black Republican in the Senate, and he believes that investment and commerce are the best ways to rebuild our most impoverished communities. This is the idea behind his signature piece of legislation, the "opportunity zones" program, which President Trump has strongly endorsed. The program provides tax incentives for businesses that invest in low-income urban areas, seeking to replace things like welfare and government assistance. In Opportunity Knocks, Senator Scott will tell his life story with a focus on adversity and opportunity. He will teach readers about the principles of hard work and hope while addressing the dangers of veering too far toward socialist policies. The book will also not shy away from discussions of racism and racial inequality in the United States, and will recount some of Senator Scott's own brushes with racism as well as the many discussions he's had with people who want to help, including President Trump.Do you know what the Constitution ACTUALLY says? p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Calibri} This witty and…

By Alina Das. 2020
This provocative account of our immigration system's long, racist history reveals how it has become the brutal machine that upends…
the lives of millions of immigrants today. Each year in the United States, hundreds of thousands of people are arrested, imprisoned, and deported, trapped in what leading immigrant rights activist and lawyer Alina Das calls the "deportation machine." The bulk of the arrests target people who have a criminal record -- so-called "criminal aliens" -- the majority of whose offenses are immigration-, drug-, or traffic-related. These individuals are uprooted and banished from their homes, their families, and their communities.Through the stories of those caught in the system, Das traces the ugly history of immigration policy to explain how the U.S. constructed the idea of the "criminal alien," effectively dividing immigrants into the categories "good" and "bad," "deserving" and "undeserving." As Das argues, we need to confront the cruelty of the machine so that we can build an inclusive immigration policy premised on human dignity and break the cycle once and for all.Markets, Minds, and Money: Why America Leads the World in University Research
By Miguel Urquiola. 2020
A colorful history of US research universities, and a market-based theory of their global success. American education has its share…
of problems, but it excels in at least one area: university-based research. That’s why American universities have produced more Nobel Prize winners than those of the next twenty-nine countries combined. Economist Miguel Urquiola argues that the principal source of this triumph is a free-market approach to higher education. Until the late nineteenth century, research at American universities was largely an afterthought, suffering for the same reason that it now prospers: the free market permits institutional self-rule. Most universities exploited that flexibility to provide what well-heeled families and church benefactors wanted. They taught denominationally appropriate materials and produced the next generation of regional elites, no matter the students’—or their instructors’—competence. These schools were nothing like the German universities that led the world in research and advanced training. The American system only began to shift when certain universities, free to change their business model, realized there was demand in the industrial economy for students who were taught by experts and sorted by talent rather than breeding. Cornell and Johns Hopkins led the way, followed by Harvard, Columbia, and a few dozen others that remain centers of research. By the 1920s the United States was well on its way to producing the best university research. Free markets are not the solution for all educational problems. Urquiola explains why they are less successful at the primary and secondary level, areas in which the United States often lags. But the entrepreneurial spirit has certainly been the key to American leadership in the research sector that is so crucial to economic success.A Brief History of Fascist Lies
By Federico Finchelstein. 2020
In this short companion to his book From Fascism to Populism in History, world-renowned historian Federico Finchelstein explains why fascists…
regarded simple and often hateful lies as truth, and why so many of their followers believed the falsehoods. Throughout the history of the twentieth century, many supporters of fascist ideologies regarded political lies as truth incarnated in their leader. From Hitler to Mussolini, fascist leaders capitalized on lies as the base of their power and popular sovereignty. This history continues in the present, when lies again seem to increasingly replace empirical truth. Now that actual news is presented as "fake news" and false news becomes government policy, A Brief History of Fascist Lies urges us to remember that the current talk of "post-truth" has a long political and intellectual lineage that we cannot ignore.Deepening Your Prayer Life: Approach God with Boldness (Charles F. Stanley Bible Study Series)
By Charles F. Stanley. 2020
Listening and speaking to God.Prayer is communication. It is not a formula that we have memorized, or an empty repetition…
of words and phrases, but our conversation with God–with us first speaking and then listening to what God has to say to us in return. However, as Dr. Charles Stanley reveals in Deepening Your Prayer Life, our prayers go beyond mere human interaction in that it gives us access into the very throne room of God. Our heavenly Father grants us the privilege to come before him with authority because of our position in Christ. When we do, we can be bold in believing that God will accomplish what He promised He would do in our lives. The Charles F. Stanley Bible Study Series is a unique approach to Bible study, incorporating biblical truth, personal insights, emotional responses, and a call to action. Each study draws on Dr. Stanley&’s many years of teaching the guiding principles found in God&’s Word, showing how we can apply them in practical ways to every situation we face. This edition of the series has been completely revised and updated, and includes two brand-new lessons from Dr. Stanley. Each lesson includes:Overview: A brief look at what is covered in the lessonLife&’s Questions: A teaching from Dr. Stanley that unpacks the topic of the lessonLiving the Principle: Application and Bible study questions based on the key pointsReflection: Key takeaways to put into practice today and tomorrowThe Turkish-Syrian borderlands host almost half of the Syrian refugees, with an estimated 1.5 million people arriving in the area…
following the outbreak of the Syrian civil war. This book investigates the ongoing negotiations of ethnicity, religion and state at the border, as refugees struggle to settle and to navigate their encounters with the Turkish state and with different sectarian groups. In particular, the book explores the situation in Antakya, the site of the ancient city of Antioch, the "cradle of civilizations", and now populated by diverse populations of Arab Alawites, Christians and Sunni-Turks. The book demonstrates that urban refugee encounters at the margins of the state reveal larger concerns that encompass state practices and regional politics. Overall, the book shows how and why displacement in the Middle East is intertwined with negotiations of identity, politics and state. Faced with an environment of everyday oppression, refugees negotiate their own urban space and "refugee" status, challenging, resisting and sometimes confirming sectarian boundaries. This book’s detailed analysis will be of interest to anthropologists, geographers, sociologists, historians, and Middle Eastern studies scholars who are working on questions of displacement, cultural boundaries and the politics of civil war in border regions. In Romans 7:15, St. Paul expressed frustration with something all of us can relate to, saying, “I do not understand…
what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” Despite our best efforts to live our lives as we ought to, we repeatedly fall into the trap of “not understanding what we do,” and constantly perpetrating the same missteps we have previously vowed never to take again. What is the reason of our deeply ingrained fallibility? Christians do what they hate either because they consciously, deliberately and sinfully transgress Jesus’ commands, or because they are experiencing unintended and often unconscious symptoms of mental ailments. The interconnectedness of sinful and psychologically disordered behaviors is undeniable. Malignant selfishness, which we recognize as sin, is often linked to narcissistic character features. Repeated belligerent acting out may be rooted in a paranoid mindset. Emotional cruelty may be not freely chosen but tied to antisocial personality traits; sinning against the sixth commandment can be driven by the illness of pedophilia. The reverse is also true: most mentally disordered behaviors involve some form of intentional and sinful violation of Jesus’ command. Though the boundary between sin and sickness may appear fuzzy at times, a thorough understanding of their interplay is of utmost importance when faced with matters of freedom of choice, conscience, responsibility and, most of all, pastoral care. This comprehensive handbook on pastoral care successfully integrates the biblical and medical/scientific perspectives on human anthropology, mental illness and sin. It expounds on the signs of all major mental ailments and provides recommendations for their pastoral and medical treatment. Problems from psychoses to mood disorders, suicide to sexual disturbances, anxiety to addictive behaviors, and ailments in between are explained. Readers will find new insights on the ways in which various personality disorders interfere with spiritual functioning. Developmental stages in life are also discussed, together with the spiritual challenges they pose, and the pastoral answers they call for. This work does not shy away from controversial topics, such as post-abortion syndrome, euthanasia, gender ideology, or the psychological aspects of atheism. Soundly faith-based, yet well-grounded in contemporary psychiatric knowledge, this handbook captures a lifetime of learning and healing by practicing psychologist who holds an MD, PhD, and a graduate theology degree. It is an indispensable practical reference for all pastoral workers. The Rapture Part II: Fullfillment of : The Signs in The Sky, The Festivals in Summer, and The Parables of The End Times
By Jopie Rattu, Sridadi Atiyanto. 2020
This second part of the book explains about the signs of heaven that are related to the second coming of…
the Lord Jesus. His first coming is marked by a sign in the sky in the form of a star in the east as explained in Matthew 2:2: Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. God also gave signs in the sky relating to His second coming: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: (Acts 2:20) From 2014-2019 there were sixteen sky signs referred to the verse, in the form of nine solar eclipses and seven total lunar eclipses (moons like blood), thirteen of which occur right on the feast days of the people of Israel and three on the days that we interpret related to end-time events, that are on the day would be the beginning of great tribulation, on the day of the cessation of daily sacrifices, and the last day of great tribulation in Jerusalem. Furthermore, the eclipses of years 2018 have the same interval of days with the ones in 2015, especially when reckoned from the calendar year beginning on the 1st day of Nissan and the other calendar year beginning on the 15th day of Shevat. The Bible records that the end times will occur when conditions are safe and peaceful, but they will suddenly turn into chaos accompanied by severe persecution. ”For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.” (1 Thessalonans 5:3) In medical science, the normal gestation period lasts 266 days, and the Lord gave a lot of signs similar to pregnancy (266). In addition, the book also explains the Israelite festivals and their meanings and prophecies. The Israelites have seven main feasts which are divided into two, namely the festivals of Rainy Season and the festival of Summer. The three festivals of the Rainy Season were fulfilled at the time of the first coming of the Lord Jesus. The four summer festivals in the form of the feast of the Trumpet, the day of Atonement, the feast of Tabernacles and the day of Hanukkah have not yet been fulfilled. Many theologians believe that the holidays will be fulfilled in connection with the second coming of the Lord Jesus. Surprisingly, when we interpreted end-time events based on data of solar eclipses and total lunar eclipses , Israel's feasts and Bible verses, it turns out that our interpretation of the end-time events occurred precisely in the days the Summer feast and in accordance with the prophecies of these feast days, so that if this really happens then the second coming of the Lord Jesus will be the fulfillment of the Israel's Summer festivals! The Rapture Part I: Fullfillment of : The Signs in The Sky, The Festivals in Summer, and The Parables of The End Times
By Jopie Rattu, Sridadi Atiyanto. 2020
The end of times is a topic that always attracts the attention of the Lord’s congregation since the beginning, because…
in the last days, the believers will be raised into the clouds to meet the Lord. However, Lord Jesus also stated that in the last days, there will be a severe persecution. That is why they need to prepare themselves to face this severe persecution. In this first part of the book, the authors present very basic things that should be known by Christians, namely, things relating to the end times which include: Signs and marks 666 which must not be accepted by Christians. This section explains the link between "Biochip" and 666 and the reasons and verses that explain why God's children may not accept chip666. What are the consequences for a child of God who receives Chip666 and what is the fate of a child of God who refuses to accept it. The importance of knowing the last world ruler, because from this kingdom will emerge ten kings and antichrists. There are four main end times figures, namely Satan, ten kings, antichrist and false prophets. The Bible clearly explains these four figures so we can interpret these figures today. Rapture: what and when. The rapture will occur after the time of tribulation but before the vials of God's wrath. This means that God's children will experience persecution. The difference between the tribulation period and God’s wrath period. Tribulation period: when it starts and ends. The events that occurred related to the opening of each seal of the seven seals in the Book of Revelation. Emergence and duties of “two witnesses of God.” When the appearance of two witnesses of God and what are their duties. Christian preparations and attitudes in the end times. Because at the end times all of God's children will experience persecution, so much preparation must be done. Where the preparation is not only related to the physical but primarily spiritual preparation that requires time and sincerity. In addition, at the end of this book, the estimated “The Book of Revelation in a New Structure” is included. Many Christians have difficulty understanding the contents of the Book of Revelation. This happened, for one thing, because the contents and events in the Book of Revelation were not sequential from beginning to end, there are several events that were repeated in other sections, because the Apostle John wrote the Book of Revelation from two visions, where some of the two visions are related to the same things. If all the same events are put together so that the contents of the Book of Revelation are sequential in time from beginning to end, then the Book of Revelation becomes easy to understand and even the meaning of the seven seals is easier to understand, without needing to be interpreted, because the meaning of the first to the third seal is found in another chapter of the Book of Revelation.Public Policymaking

other but it didn’t matter. No-one knew how to do this thing but that didn’t matter either. In 1993, the Right Reverend Frank K. Allan, 8th Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, was keeping an interested eye on the rapid development of a northern suburb known as Johns Creek. He began to think about the Christian souls who were settling there, putting down roots to begin a new life and raise their children in a new city. Where would they worship? How would they express their Christian faith? What could he do meet their needs? The Good Tree is the story of a group of parishioners from Saint David’s Episcopal Church in Roswell who got together to build a mission church in nearby Alpharetta. Beginning with prayer and enthusiasm and guided by the inspirational Father Noel Burtenshaw, the founding of a new mission church was a deeply spiritual and yet very human journey for all concerned. The Good Tree describes that journey, from its unexpected beginnings, through the first twenty-five years of highs and lows, twists and turns, including the difficult period that followed the ordination of Canon Gene Robinson as Bishop of New Hampshire. If you ever wondered how a church building comes to be in a particular place at a particular time, or if you are interested in exploring the expression of Christianity in the modern world, or if you are simply interested in reading an inspiring story about a group of ordinary people with a determined Christian purpose, then you will enjoy reading The Good Tree.Embrace Your Identity in Christ
By Niyi Olujobi. 2020
This book brings to light how the Father sees us with scriptural references and how we are to respond to…
the Father’s heart for us. This book takes us from just embracing who we are in Him to assuming the responsibility of a son based on love and not necessarily duty. The revelation of our identity in Christ should be the foundation of all discipleship program for new believers in Christ and one of the key steps in ministering to those who are students of inner healing and the basis of follow-up after freedom sessions with people. The concept and revelation of our identity in Christ is crucial in developing a proper relationship with God our Father. Jesus came to model sonship. The first Adam (also known as a son of God), we never knew him when he was without sin and hence, cannot model on him however the last Adam came (known as the Son of God), we knew Him without sin and He modelled sonship in all forms that He might become our perfect example of what a son should look like.Based on our identity in Christ and our maturity in the same, we can now assume the responsibility of sonship. In the natural, the level of maturity of a son will determine the level of responsibility given to that son. The same is applicable in the kingdom of God. Your level of maturity in your sonship will determine the level of responsibility the Father can commit to you. This book is not just about affirming our identity in Christ but also challenges us on the responsibility of sonship. This book empowers you to overcome the works of darkness. 1 John 3:8 talks of the Son of God was manifested to destroy the works of the devil and as you assume and embrace your sonship, you will equally do the same, that is, destroy the works of the devil in your daily life. The world is waiting for the manifestation of the sons of God. It is time to arise into what God has made you to be. I celebrate the you that emerges after absorbing the truth of God that comes from the words in this book.May this book enable you live the victorious life you have been designed to live; may it enable you rise up to purpose and destiny in the kingdom of God and may it create a ripple effect on all those in whom you come in contact with.A Concise Guide To Pastoral Planning (Concise Guide)

By Elizabeth Eddy, Julius Roth. 1967
This book is a study detailing what happens to people and what life is like in a rehabilitation program. The…
program discussed is embedded in an institution, called ""Farewell Hospital"" by the authors, that was designed to fill a demand for facilities for those judged unable to live on their own. Due to physical or mental handicaps and no family, friends, or other social agents who are willing to make a home for them outside of a public institution, these patients were placed in a rehabilitation unit. Most patients were placed with the rehabilitation unit as a brief interlude before their permanent placement in the custodial unit of the vast institution where they would live out their lives. This work deals with the question of what happens to patients once they are rehabilitated and the non-therapeutic rules and practices of the health and welfare structure of which they are a part. In this case, the rehabilitation specialists and ward workers set themselves the task of improving the life chances of their clients by treating their ailments when possible and by improving their physical functioning so that they were better able to care for their own needs. The authors examine the effects of the organizational relationships on rehabilitation outcomes and on the lives of the people who make hospitals their home. The text attempts to sustain feeling for the historical context of their study the ""problem"" of larger numbers of disabled, poverty-stricken persons, who are no longer wanted by anyone and asserts that a ""solution"" must be found.Refugees, Security and the European Union (Routledge/UACES Contemporary European Studies)
By Christian Kaunert, Sarah Léonard. 2019
This book analyses the extent and the modalities of the securitization of asylum-seekers and refugees in the EU. It argues…
that the development of the EU asylum policy, far from 'securitizing' asylum-seekers and refugees, has led to the strengthening and codification of several rights for these two categories of persons. However, the securitization of terrorism and the links that have been constructed between asylum, irregular migration and terrorism in the wake of the various terrorist attacks that have taken place in Europe in the last few years have had a significant impact on the ability of asylum-seekers to gain access to asylum systems in the EU. From a theoretical point of view, the book develops an original analytical framework that draws upon and further develops security studies – more precisely securitization theory – by connecting it to the literature on policy venues and venue-shopping. It therefore makes a significant contribution to the debates on both securitization and migration. Empirically examining the entire development of the EU’s policy towards asylum-seekers and refugees, from its origins in 1993, this book will be of great interest to students of European and EU politics, refugees, migration, security, terrorism and counter-terrorism, security studies and International Relations.Exploring Postcolonial Biblical Criticism: History, Method, Practice

By William H. Rickards, Monica Stitt-Bergh. 2016
Evaluation has played a fundamental role throughout the history of higher education. It has been key to institutional missions and…
for accountability concerns for public funding policy and fiscal oversight. In the last 30 years, there has been focused attention on the quality of education and student learning. Campuses have stepped up their initiatives to evaluate educational outcomes—and communicate these to their constituencies—just as regional, state, and national efforts have emerged regarding assessment of learning outcomes. In this context, various methods and approaches to evaluative inquiry have emerged to support efforts to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of instructional practice and curriculum for higher learning. This edition examines perspectives on evaluation studies addressing higher education learning—from program- to institution-based studies and critiques of practice—to document successes and identify significant challenges that face evaluators and the collaborating educators in the continuing development of higher education. This examination represents both an investigation into the particular insights that evaluative inquiry contributes to the scholarship and practice of higher education and a reflection on the evaluation expertise that can be applied across contexts of professionalpractice and program development. This is the 151st issue in the New Directions for Evaluation series from Jossey-Bass. It is an official publication of the American Evaluation Association.
