Psalms Volume 2 which is part of the NIV Application Commentary Series helps readers learn how the…
message of the Psalms can have the same powerful impact today that it did when they were first written The majority of Bible commentaries take readers on a one-way trip to the world of the Bible But they leave them there assuming that they can somehow make the return journey on their own They focus on the original meaning of the passage but don t discuss its contemporary application - the job is only half done The NIV Application Commentary Series helps bring both halves of the interpretive task together This unique award-winning series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into our postmodern context It explains not only what the Bible meant but also how it speaks powerfully todayBy Rev J. who pierced Jesus’s side as he died on the cross. Longinus sees the great mercy that Jesus showed even in his darkest hour. Through the saint’s eyes, we also view Christ in a new way and appreciate his sacrifice with deeper understanding. These reflections create a resonant experience that helps readers discover Christ’s mercy for renewed faith.By Torey Hayden. 1983
When Torey Hayden first met fifteen-year-old Kevin, he was barricaded under a table. Desperately afraid of the world around him,…
he hadn’t spoken a word in eight years. He was considered hopeless, incurable, but Hayden refused to believe it. With unwavering devotion and gentle, patient love, she set out to free him—and slowly uncovered a shocking, violent history and a terrible secret that an unfeeling bureaucracy had simply filed away and forgotten. But she never gave up on this tragic “lost case.” For a trapped and frightened boy desperately needed her help—and she knew in her heart she could not rest easy until she had rescued him from the darkness.By Andrew Bishop. 2018
Sleep occupies around one third of a person's life and is the subject of research across many disciplines. In this…
groundbreaking new monograph, Andrew Bishop explores sleep by creatively drawing on resources of the Christian tradition. Sleep is a subject which demands theological attention, because of the central place it occupies in contemporary reflection on what it is to be human. Offering original research, this book investigates sleep for the first time from a theological position, looking at all key questions that a theological treatment of sleep raises, including issues of identity and personhood, sleep and mortality, resurrection, and renewal and healing.Second chair leaders play a critical role in churches across the world. They serve in paid and unpaid capacities, and…
include laity, ordained clergy, bivocational, licensed local pastors and others who lead significant ministries, but who are not the lead or senior pastor. Mike Bonem, author of Leading from the Second Chair, takes that important work to the next level, with Thriving in the Second Chair. Here, Bonem points readers beyond their external circumstances to the ways they can act and think differently. He highlights ten key factors that will help second chair leaders do more than just survive. These deep "springs" will enable them to thrive, so that their lives and ministries are fulfilling, vital, and sustainable. The first three springs relate to the single most important professional relationship for any second chair leader - their relationship with the first chair. The next four look at some of the most common and essential aspects of the second chair's job. The final three springs are arguably the deepest and most important. They enable second chairs to thrive even if they're struggling with the first seven. These three springs offer help for staying spiritually anchored, overcoming loneliness, and becoming re-energized.By William Jeynes, Enedina Martinez. 2015
This book combines the research on spiritual ministering with the practice of counseling families. It examines such topics as how…
to prepare for marriage, how to keep a marriage divorce proof, and how parents influence children, and vice versa. In its quest to discover what makes families thrive, the book addresses and compares best parenting practices and describes interventions that help the development of family ties over a large span of the life-course. It offers guidance to families through several stages of family life: Pre-marital, marital, and raising children and adolescents. It makes clear that what constitutes an effective parent changes over the life course.By Fr. Thomas Dubay. 1977

Jadie never spoke. She never laughed, or cried, or uttered any sound. Despite efforts to reach her, Jadie remained locked…
in her own troubled world . . . until one remarkable teacher persuaded her to break her self-imposed silence.Nothing in all of Torey Hayden’s experience could have prepared her for the shock of what Jadie told her—a story too horrendous for Torey’s professional colleagues to acknowledge. Yet a little girl was living in a nightmare, and Torey responded in the only way she knew how—with courage, compassion, and dedication—demonstrating once again the tremendous power of love and the resilience of the human spirit.By Beverly Courrege. 1998

How gaming intersects with systems like history, bodies, and code Why do we so compulsively play video games? Might it…
have something to do with how gaming affects our emotions? In Playing with Feelings, scholar Aubrey Anable applies affect theory to game studies, arguing that video games let us “rehearse” feelings, states, and emotions that give new tones and textures to our everyday lives and interactions with digital devices. Rather than thinking about video games as an escape from reality, Anable demonstrates how video games—their narratives, aesthetics, and histories—have been intimately tied to our emotional landscape since the emergence of digital computers.Looking at a wide variety of video games—including mobile games, indie games, art games, and games that have been traditionally neglected by academia—Anable expands our understanding of the ways in which these games and game studies can participate in feminist and queer interventions in digital media culture. She gives a new account of the touchscreen and intimacy with our mobile devices, asking what it means to touch and be touched by a game. She also examines how games played casually throughout the day create meaningful interludes that give us new ways of relating to work in our lives. And Anable reflects on how games allow us to feel differently about what it means to fail.Playing with Feelings offers provocative arguments for why video games should be seen as the most significant art form of the twenty-first century and gives the humanities passionate, incisive, and daring arguments for why games matter.By J. How do you understand the dimensions, power, mind, will, and love of God when He is beyond definition? Dr. J.…
Vernon McGee unravels the mystery of who God is and offers a solid theological understanding for the layman. Thoroughly biblical, Who Is God? dos not attempt to put Him in a box, but instead examines the biblical revelation and affirms that though God cannot be measured by human standards, He does reveal Himself to us. From learning about the Trinity to discussing God's character, Dr. McGee gives both believer and nonbeliever wise counsel on who God is and how He makes Himself known to us.By Alex Harris, Brett Harris. 2013

Deserted by his mother and abandoned by his father at just three months old, Jerry Coyne was sent to live…
in a Catholic children's home run by nuns of the order of the Sisters of Nazareth. Life soon settled into a rhythm and then, one day, the beatings started. Harsh, vicious punishments became part of everyday life for the bemused little boy as the nuns attempted to beat the Devil out of him. Jerry began to hide behind bad behaviour and at the age of 12, his defiance resulted in him being sent to a boarding for boys with behavioural problems. Life then got worse when his housemaster, the man whose job it was to take care of him, began a regime of mental, physical and sexual abuse. Years of self-hatred and guilt led to Jerry suffering from a severe stammer and, eventually, he tried to hang himself. This was the turning point and, after finally finding the courage to go to the authorities, Jerry and numerous other victims came forward and were instrumental in the conviction and imprisonment of their abuser. Devil's Child is the devastating true story of a childhood destroyed by abuse and of a young man's struggle to try to come to terms with the past and believe in the future.By Richard J. Chacon, Michael Charles Scoggins. 2014
This work documents the impact that the Great Awakening had on the inhabitants of colonial America's Southern Backcountry. Special emphasis…
is placed on how this religious revival furrowed the ground on which the seeds of the American Revolution would sprout. The investigation shows how the Great Awakening can be traced to the Europe's Age of Enlightenment. This effort also demonstrates how and why this revival spread so rapidly throughout the colonies. Special focus is placed on how the Great Awakening impacted the mindset of colonists of the Southern Backcountry. Most significantly, this research demonstrates how this 18thcentury revival not only cultivated a sense of American national identity, but how it also fostered a colonial mindset against established authority which, in turn, facilitated the success of the American Revolution. Additionally, this investigation will document (from a cross-cultural perspective) how religious revivals have fueled other revolutionary movements around the world. Such analysis will include the Celtic Druid Revolt, the Maji-Maji Rebellion of East Africa along with the Mad Man's War in Southeast Asia. Lastly, the ethical ramifications of minimizing (or denying) the role that religion played in political and social transformations around the world will be addressed. This final point is of paramount importance given current trend in academia to minimize the role that religion played in spurring revolutions while emphasizing material (i. e. economic) causal factors. This attempt at divorcing religion from history is misguided and unethical because it is not only misleading but it also fails to fully acknowledge the beliefs and values that motivated individuals to take certain actions in the first place.Created to counteract the spiritual imbalance that MI can cause, the Moral Injury Reconciliation (MIR) methodology is a 9-week, 3-phased…
spiritual care treatment, for Veteran and family transformation. This book presents this methodology as a trans-diagnostic approach for practitioners working with clients with MI, PTSD, grief and military sexual trauma. Using the language of reconciliation and spiritual transformation in the context of working therapeutically with Veterans, the author shows how chaplains and others involved in spiritual care can work on the assessment and therapy of those who have experienced MI during their combat experience. It reconciles past trauma, creates a focused 'here-and-now' present and anticipates a hopeful future through spiritual awareness, communication skills and altruism.By Ronald Kessler. 2014

continued to penetrate the wall of secrecy that surrounds the U.S. Secret Service, breaking the story that Secret Service agents who were to protect President Obama hired prostitutes in Cartagena, Colombia and revealing that the Secret Service allowed a third uninvited guest to crash a White House state dinner. Now in The First Family Detail: Secret Service Agents Reveal the Hidden Lives of the Presidents, Kessler presents far bigger and more consequential stories that will make headlines about our nation's leaders and the agency sworn to protect them. Kessler widens his scope to include presidential candidates and former presidents after they leave the White House. In particular, he focuses on first ladies and their children and their relationships with the presidents. From seeing reckless behavior that threatens the country's safety, to overhearing First Lady Michelle Obama's admonitions to the president, to watching their own agency take risks that could result in an assassination, Secret Service agents know a hidden world that Ronald Kessler exposes in The First Family Detail. From the Hardcover edition.By Jim George. 2011
