By Johann Bauer. 1994
This book presents a summary of the application and instrumentation of cell electrophoresis. The method of making cell purification and…
characterization possible according to the cellular negative surface charge density is discussed, and ideas for future developments are explained. The negative electrostatic forces at cell surfaces provide information about cell-cell interaction, blood vessel sealing, cytokine actions, cell transformation, ion transport phenomena, and other biological phenomena. Recalculations of the physical principles of cell electrophoresis reveal possibilities for removing disruptive factors caused by electrical current, heat, and sedimentation. The introduction of computer technology, the performance of simultaneous two-parameter measurements, and the application of cell-friendly but current-inert buffer systems render the method more reliable and efficient. The Psychopathology of Functional Somatic Syndromes: Neurobiology and Illness Behavior in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Gulf War Illness, Irrit
By Peter Manu, Roberto Patarca-Montero. 2004
Learn how a patient&’s behavior can factor into the prognosis of medically unexplainable illness! The Psychopathology of Functional Somatic Syndromes…
examines the link between mental illness and physical syndromes that lack organic disease explanations, including chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, premenstrual dysphoria, irritable bowel, and Gulf War illness. The author has evaluated the best research work of the past 20 years to determine the association between psychopathology and functional illness, the biological gradient between somatic and psychological symptoms, and the manifestations of dysfunctional coping. The Psychopathology of Functional Somatic Syndromes challenges recent conceptualizations of functional somatic syndromes as brain disorders connected to affective spectrum disorder, serotonin deficiency, cerebral hypoperfusion or abnormal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal function and highlights the importance of abnormal illness behavior, sexual victimization, and maladaptive coping for the production and maintenance of these disorders. The Psychopathology of Functional Somatic Syndromes explores observations on the neurobiology and the personality abnormalities of patients made from structured data collected over a period of several years. It describes modern perceptions of functional somatic syndromes and how they have evolved into a tightly knit family of self-standing syndromes with a common core. The book examines the correlation between the burden of psychopathology and the physical features of these illnesses; reviews advances made in the appraisal of the neuroanatomy, neuropsychology, and neurochemistry of functional syndromes; and focuses on the connection between measurable dimensions of personality, coping, and illness behavior and the prognosis of medically unexplainable illnesses. The Psychopathology of Functional Somatic Syndromes examines: psychiatric morbidity brain perfusion post-traumatic stress in Gulf War illness the spectrum of mood disorders the hypothalamatic-pituitary-adrenal axis the sexual victimization of patients and much more! The Psychopathology of Functional Somatic Syndromes is an essential resource for psychiatrists and psychologists working in outpatient practice.Nutrition in the '90s: Current Controversies and Analysis

Reaffirm your political and spiritual commitment to helping the poor and oppressed! How can teachers and social workers reach the endangered…
kids who seldom come to school? By going to the streets, where the children live, work, fight, steal, get sick, sell their bodies, and all too often die. Working with Children on the Streets of Brazil is an in-depth study of Brazil's homeless children and the street youthworkers who offer them food, clothing, beds, hope, medical attention, education, and simple respect. The street children of Brazil live in unimaginable poverty and squalor, stealing jewelry or selling their bodies to survive, wandering homeless and untaught, pursued by death squads who clean up the streets by washing them with blood. Yet the street youthworkers interviewed in this moving, powerful book--some inspired by the Catholic Church's Liberation Theology movement, some employed by the government or private agencies--continue their efforts to help and heal these children, often with remarkable success. Their work is widely respected, and their unique viewpoint on serving throwaway children can offer creative solutions for social service workers around the globe. Many of the issues discussed in Working with Children on the Streets of Brazil will be painfully familiar to social service workers everywhere, including: the problems of how to identify, classify, and count the children of the streets the reasons children leave or lose their homes the implications of policy decisions and socioeconomic forces on the children's lives the clash between law-and-order advocates and social service professionals the negative effects of deinstitutionalization and overcrowded youth homes the tragic societal consequences of the widening gap between rich and poor the problems of youth crime and violence the difficulties in delivering education, health care, and basic services for homeless childrenThis impressive book offers a detailed history of the development of street social education; a study of the aims, methods, and experiences of youthworkers; and solid advice on using the principles and practices of street social education to reach the at-risk youth of any country, including the United States. Working with Children on the Streets of Brazil is both a scholarly work on the phenomenon of homeless children and a rousing call to action that will remind you of the reasons you chose to work in social services.Adherance to Treatment in Medical Conditions

By Jean A Pardeck, Roland Meinert, Larry W Kreuger. 2000
Discover why social work must be restructured if it is to remain viable!Social Work: Seeking Relevancy in the Twenty-First Century…
provides you with a critical examination of the major issues that social work education and practice must confront if social work is to remain as a mainline profession. The book explores issues that are not normally covered in social work literature, such as the challenge of reconstructing the social work profession, the use of technology in social work, and the tension surrounding various social work education curriculums. You will benefit from this thorough discussion of the many problems that the social work profession is facing: a lack of scholarly research, inadequate educational programs, and the use of hypertechnology to educate social work students.Social Work: Seeking Relevancy in the Twenty-First Century examines the epistemological, theoretical, socio/technical, and practice directions that social work has branched into. You'll discover that today's central direction for social work is generated from liberal, postmodern, and increasingly feminist ideological perspectives. In a field where conceptual and theoretical input rarely allow for intellectual diversity, this volume demonstrates that several views are best for inquiry and exploration in social work.Issues discussed include: examining real or unreal social work values by separating them from beliefs, preferences, norms, attitudes, and opinions creating social work course outlines that incorporate practices developed around the globe, allowing for more conceptual and theoretical growth within the field realizing the tremendous difference between communication in the instrumental sense via technology, and in the affective, soul-oriented sense via personal interaction investigating the negative effects of communicating with hypertechnology (modems, e-mail) in the social work profession realizing the need for a greater quantity and quality of social work research to progress further in the fieldSocial Work: Seeking Relevancy in the Twenty-First Century invites you to reinvent social work for today's post-industrial and post-modern era. You will discover a series of challenges that social work must meet and overcome if it is to move into the new century as a relevant and viable profession. You will explore solutions such as increasing scholarship and research among social workers, and decreasing the use of technology (for example, classes held via the Internet) in social work education programs in order to increase the quality of the social work profession. The Guide to Complementary and Alternative Medicine on the Internet

By Raúl Necochea López, Anne-Emanuelle Birn. 2020
Buenos Aires psychoanalysts resisting imperialism. Brazilian parasitologists embracing communism as an antidote to rural misery. Nicaraguan revolutionaries welcoming Cuban health…
cooperation. Chilean public health reformers gauging domestic approaches against their Soviet and Western counterparts. As explored in Peripheral Nerve, these and accompanying accounts problematize existing understandings of how the Cold War unfolded in Latin America generally and in the health and medical realms more specifically. Bringing together scholars from across the Americas, this volume chronicles the experiences of Latin American physicians, nurses, medical scientists, and reformers who interacted with dominant U.S. and European players and sought alternative channels of health and medical solidarity with the Soviet Union and via South-South cooperation. Throughout, Peripheral Nerve highlights how Latin American health professionals accepted, rejected, and adapted foreign involvement; manipulated the rivalry between the United States and the USSR; and forged local variants that they projected internationally. In so doing, this collection reveals the multivalent nature of Latin American health politics, offering a significant contribution to Cold War history.Contributors. By Françoise Vergès. 2020
In the 1960s thousands of poor women of color on the (post)colonial French island of Reunion had their pregnancies forcefully…
terminated by white doctors; the doctors operated under the pretext of performing benign surgeries, for which they sought government compensation. When the scandal broke in 1970, the doctors claimed to have been encouraged to perform these abortions by French politicians who sought to curtail reproduction on the island, even though abortion was illegal in France. In The Wombs of Women—first published in French and appearing here in English for the first time—Françoise Vergès traces the long history of colonial state intervention in black women’s wombs during the slave trade and postslavery imperialism as well as in current birth control politics. She examines the women’s liberation movement in France in the 1960s and 1970s, showing that by choosing to ignore the history of the racialization of women’s wombs, French feminists inevitably ended up defending the rights of white women at the expense of women of color. Ultimately, Vergès demonstrates how the forced abortions on Reunion were manifestations of the legacies of the racialized violence of slavery and colonialism.Handbook of Disaster Medicine
By Jan De Boer, Marcel Dubouloz. 1979
Technological development has not only provided mankind with more prosperity, but with increased destructive power as well. These developments, combined…
with an explosive growth of the world population, have led to mass casualty situations, varying from traffic accidents to war. In the 20th Century over 200 million people were killed as a result of man-made disasters --- a figure unequalled in the history of mankind. It is not surprising, therefore, that a new medical discipline has emerged: disaster medicine. The realization that disasters have effects which cross the traditional boundaries of medical specialisms and nationality, led to the foundation of the International Society of Disaster Medicine (ISDM), which issued an international curriculum on education and training in disaster medicine. As a logical consequence the ISDM decided to develop its curriculum into a handbook, now available to the global community of disaster medicine specialists. This Handbook of Disaster Medicine contains contributions from international experts in the field and will be of value and interest to a wide variety of professionals in the discipline of disaster medicine and management.Capsule Endoscopy: A Guide to Becoming an Efficient and Effective Reader

and recommend appropriate treatment for patients believed to be substance abusers. While it is not written for drug abuse specialists, it provides information regarding the diagnosis and treatments a competent, concerned physician can provide without becoming immersed in addiction treatment. Topics discussed include the degree to which a physician should become involved, when it is appropriate to refer, using other professions and volunteer groups, and useful medications. Guidelines for recognizing substance abuse, testing to confirm the abuse, confronting the patient, and motivating the patient into specific treatment are also presented. Tables and illustrations are used to summarize major points, making this an extremely useful reference tool for internists and other non-specialist private practitioners.HEALTH POLICY (The Gildredge Social Policy Series)
By Ann Wall, Barry Owen. 2002
The health care system in Britain at the beginning of the twenty-first century is being subjected to radical rethinking. Health…
Policy examines how the NHS has developed to the point it has reached today as well as placing it in the wider context of the kinds of health care which are available to people in Britain. It looks at key issues which have arisen in the provision of health care such as rationing, the operation of interest groups, relationships between the public, voluntary and private sectors and whether the NHS has delivered care equally to all sectors of the population. In this second edition, the authors pay particular attention to the policy changes introduced by the Labour government following it selection in 1997 and places these within a wider discussion of the concept of a primary care-led system.Health Policy will be especially useful to readers who wish to inform themselves about what is happening in the NHS today or to deepen their understanding of current developments through an appreciation of how the health care system has evolved over the past fifty years. It includes useful summaries of key points, guides to further reading and a glossary of key terms.Measurement of Cardiovascular Function (Routledge Revivals)
