This book tells true and poignant stories from both sides of the physician-patient/parent relationship and provides a unique glimpse into…
how parents and physicians think, feel, and interact. The stories are grouped under four sections: Hope, Compassion, Communication, and Trust. Each section includes stories contributed by parents from all across the United States and by pediatricians practicing at many of the best children’s hospitals throughout the country. The parents tell of interactions with physicians that had a significant impact on them and their child and offer context and insight that promote empathy and reflection. The physicians tell of interactions with patients and families that served as learning moments in their career and promote the humanization of medicine and show there is more to a physician beyond their scientific knowledge and white coat. The stories are edited by Barry P. Markovitz - a pediatrician specializing in critical care medicine who has been in practice for more than 20 years and by Ann F. Schrooten - the parent of a child born with a chronic complex condition who has more than 15 years of experience interacting with pediatric subspecialists and other healthcare professionals who cared for her son. The editors have written commentaries to the stories to provide an independent perspective on the events and messages conveyed and to encourage reflection, inquiry, and discussion. In addition to being a valuable resource for pediatricians, pediatric subspecialists, nurses and other healthcare professionals, the book will also appeal to families of children living with complex medical conditions because it shares physician encounters and behaviors many have experienced in the care of their own children. By giving a voice to both parents and physicians, the goal is to create a bridge to better understanding that can improve communication, minimize conflicts, and foster trust and compassion among physicians, patients, and families.By Aubrey Milunsky. 2021

This book covers the theory, design and applications of computer networks, distributed computing and information systems. Networks of today are…
going through a rapid evolution, and there are many emerging areas of information networking and their applications. Heterogeneous networking supported by recent technological advances in low-power wireless communications along with silicon integration of various functionalities such as sensing, communications, intelligence and actuations is emerging as a critically important disruptive computer class based on a new platform, networking structure and interface that enable novel, low-cost and high-volume applications. Several of such applications have been difficult to realize because of many interconnections problems. To fulfill their large range of applications, different kinds of networks need to collaborate, and wired and next-generation wireless systems should be integrated in order to develop high-performance computing solutions to problems arising from the complexities of these networks. The aim of the book “Advanced Information Networking and Applications” is to provide latest research findings, innovative research results, methods and development techniques from both theoretical and practical perspectives related to the emerging areas of information networking and applications.By Jonathan Stadler. 2021
This book tells the story of the HIV epidemic in South Africa, and asks why, after more than three decades, it…
has not normalised. Despite considerable efforts to prevent infection, and ambitious targets set to end the epidemic by 2030, HIV infections are increasing among young women and treatment uptake and adherence have been uneven. Focusing on the years preceding and following treatment access, this book addresses why an end to AIDS may be misplaced optimism. By examining public discourses and private narratives about infection, illness and death, this work reveals the contradictions between the lived experiences of AIDS suffering on the one hand, and biomedical certainties on the other. Based on long-term ethnographic research in rural villages of the South African lowveld, and within HIV prevention interventions in South Africa more generally, this book offers an intimate perspective on the social and cultural responses to the epidemic.By Atooshe Rohani. 2021

This book provides an extensive coverage of the methodology of survival analysis, ranging from introductory level material to deeper more…
advanced topics. The framework is that of proportional and non-proportional hazards models; a structure that is broad enough to enable the recovery of a large number of established results as well as to open the way to many new developments. The emphasis is on concepts and guiding principles, logical and graphical. Formal proofs of theorems, propositions and lemmas are gathered together at the end of each chapter separate from the main presentation. The intended audience includes academic statisticians, biostatisticians, epidemiologists and also researchers in these fields whose focus may be more on the applications than on the theory. The text could provide the basis for a two semester course on survival analysis and, with this goal in mind, each chapter includes a section with a range of exercises as a teaching aid for instructors.By Gernot Müller-Putz, Rüdiger Rupp. 2021

A midwife's heartwarming and inspirational true storyCatching Babies is a moving account of an extraordinary career. It reveals the unique…
experiences that filled midwife Sheena Byrom's days as she looked after mums and dads and helped to bring their precious babies into the world. Bronchitis and emphysema affect some three million people in the U.K. and kill 30,000 people each year. They account for…
more loss of time from work than any other form of illness, and are usually caused by smoking, which leads to inflammation of the bronchi. As the lungs become increasingly damaged, shortness of breath develops even on moderate exertion, such as climbing stairs. As the condition worsens, simple tasks such as washing or shaving cause marked shortness of breath, and eventually fighting for breath occurs even at rest. The condition cannot be cured. However, further deterioration can be prevented, and this new edition brings us up to date with changes in treatment, though stopping smoking is still key. Difficulty in breathing can be eased by using inhalers or nebulisers which deliver drugs that open up the airways called bronchodilators (eg 'Ventolin'). Inhaled steroids (eg 'Becotide') are useful in reducing inflammation of the air tubes. Many people need to have oxygen several times a day, and dust, fumes and pollution should be avoided. Lifestyle changes may also help, such as losing weight and taking exercise.By John Naughton. 2011
We've gone from regarding the Net as something exotic to something that we take for granted, like mains electricity or…
running water. Yet most people have no idea how the network functions, nor any conception of its architecture; and few can explain why it has been - and continues to be - so uniquely disruptive in social, economic and cultural contexts. John Naughton has been thinking, arguing, lecturing and writing about the Net for over two and a half decades, and in FROM GUTENBERG TO ZUCKERBERG he distills the noisy chatter surrounding the internet's relentless evolution into nine clear-sighted and accessible areas of understanding.FROM GUTENBERG TO ZUCKERBERG gives you the requisite knowledge to make better use of the technologies and networks around and raises important questions, as exciting as they are unsettling, about the future of the Net and the impact it will have on our lives. We know what it's like to worry from time to time, but for some of us, our worrying can take…

Mysterious, intricate, pulsing with energy ... the human body is an endlessly fascinating repository of incredible secrets. In this new…
work, comprising two classics (Fearfully and Wonderfully Made and In His Image) edited together and updated, renowned surgeon Dr Paul Brand and award-winning writer Philip Yancey take us on a tour of wonder through the human body.Illustrated with stories from Dr Brand's ground-breaking career as a hand surgeon who changed the lives of leprosy sufferers by transforming medical treatment protocols, this lively narrative paints an unforgettable portrait of the incredible unity of the human body in its trillions of parts. As compassionate as he was brilliant, Dr Brand cared as much about his suffering patients as he was intensely curious about how the body works. And so just as his brilliant intuition - which led to medical breakthroughs earning him international awards and acclaim - makes human physiology come alive on the page, so does his deep love for people in their dignity as image-bearers make spirituality come alive on the page as well.Although Brand and Yancey do not presume that readers share their Christian faith, they trace the metaphor of 'one body, many parts' from a medical perspective on human life as well as a mystical perspective on the unifying presence of the Body of Christ. Filled with riveting stories of Dr Brand's work among the marginalized and outcast, this journey of understanding offers astonishing insights and page-turning reading.By Leonora Brosan. 2010
