Couples in Conflict (Penn State University Family Issues Symposia Series)
By Alan Booth, Ann C. Crouter, Mari Clements. 2001
This volume is based on the presentations and discussions of a national symposium on "Couples in Conflict" that focused on…
family issues. A common thread throughout is that constructive conflict and negotiation are beneficial for relationships. Together, the chapters provide a foundation for thinking about creative ways in which our society can work to prevent or minimize destructive couple conflict and to enhance couples' abilities to constructively handle their differences. Divided into four parts, this book: *addresses the societal and bioevolutionary underpinnings of couple conflict; *presents the interpersonal roots of couple conflict and the consequences for individuals and couples; *discusses what effects couple conflict have on children and how individual differences in children moderate these effects; and *outlines the issue of policies and programs that address couple conflict. This book concludes with an essay that pulls these four themes together and points to new directions for research and program efforts.Handbook of Divorce and Relationship Dissolution

By Cheryl A. Kuba. 2006
Navigating the Journey of Aging Parents proposes an entirely unique approach to the field of gerontology, giving dependent care receivers…
a voice. Caregivers will be made aware of what care receivers truly want during life's final chapters. Exploring issues of housing, spirituality, personal care and death, Cheryl Kuba has created a testament to the dependent elderly. This book draws on numerous interviews with aging people and discusses common caregiver mistakes and interpretations, what a caregiver should expect when an aging parent moves in, and how to care for an aging parent from afar. Kuba also delves into such phenomena as guilt, role reversal, changing family dynamics, financial stress, and caring for oneself while caring for another. The 22.4 million elderly people being cared for in the United States comprises the fastest growing segment of the population, making this reference on the opinions and concerns of care receivers invaluable.Alternde Gesellschaft im Wandel: Zur Gestaltung einer Gesellschaft des langen Lebens (Schriften zu Gesundheit und Gesellschaft - Studies on Health and Society #4)

By Claudia M. Gold, Ed Tronick. 2020
This "profoundly wise" look at how to foster connections, attachment, and resiliency explains why working through discord is the key…
to better relationships. (Sue Johnson, bestselling author of Hold Me Tight)You might think that perfect harmony is the defining characteristic of healthy relationships, but the truth is that human interactions are messy, complicated, and confusing. And according to renowned psychologist Ed Tronick and pediatrician Claudia Gold, that is not only okay, it is actually crucial to our social and emotional development. In The Power of Discord they show how working through the inevitable dissonance of human connection is the path to better relationships with romantic partners, family, friends, and colleagues.Dr. Tronick was one of the first researchers to show that babies are profoundly affected by their parents' emotions and behavior via "The Still-Face Experiment." His work, which brought about a foundational shift in our understanding of human development, shows that our highly evolved sense of self makes us separate, yet our survival depends on connection. And so we approximate, iteratively learning about one another's desires and intentions, and gaining confidence in the process as we correct the mistakes and misunderstandings that arise.Working through the volley of mismatch and repair in everyday life helps us form deep, lasting, trusting relationships, resilience in times of stress and trauma, and a solid sense of self in the world. Drawing on Dr. Tronick's research and Dr. Gold's clinical experience, The Power of Discord is a refreshing and original look at our ability to relate to others and to ourselves.Manual of Vibration Exercise and Vibration Therapy
By Jörn Rittweger. 2020
This book addresses the practical aspects of vibration exercise and vibration therapy. In addition, it describes the technical and physiological…
background, providing applied scientists and doctors with a deeper understanding of the therapeutic potential that vibration exercise holds. Having first emerged two decades ago, vibration exercise has since established itself as a widespread form of physical exercise, used in all rehabilitation areas. The goal of this book is to close the gap between scientific knowledge and practice.Given that occupational exposure to vibration leads to well-known unfavorable effects, the book is also dedicated to potential risks, hazards and contra-indications and of course, the application of vibration therapy in a number of specific conditions is presented in a clinically usable fashion. Given its breadth of coverage, this book will be of interest to physiotherapists and exercise scientists, but also to a wider range of physicians working in the field of rehabilitation.Active Ageing and Physical Activity: Guidelines, Functional Exercises and Recommendations (SpringerBriefs in Well-Being and Quality of Life Research)
By Gonçalo Nuno Figueiredo Dias, Micael Santos Couceiro. 2017
This book presents an analysis of active ageing and physical activity from a multidisciplinary perspective. With descriptions of exercises, adequately…
illustrated with pictures, this book shows that regular physical activity reduces the prevalence of chronic diseases associated with ageing, as well as the risk of morbidity and mortality of the elderly. It confirms that exercise programs minimize the psychomotor decline, prevent the loss of functionality, inability and dementia, and foster significant gains in health and well-being, leading to increased quality of life of the elderly.Becoming A Family: Parents' Stories and Their Implications for Practice, Policy, and Research
By Rena D. Harold, Patricia Stow Bolea, Lisa G. Colarossi, Lucy R. Mercier, Carol R. Freedman-Doan. 2000
The movement from young adulthood through coupling and the transition to parenthood may be among the most universal adult developmental…
transitions. These passages hold interest for all of us, but especially for those who study the psychological, familial, and sociocultural components of development, all of which interact and influence each other. This book enhances understanding of family-life development by shedding light on the meanings that family members ascribe to the developmental process of becoming a family. This is achieved through qualitative analysis of narratives through which individuals and families explain themselves, their thinking, and their behavior. These family narratives are windows into individual and family identity, as well as descriptions of connections to others. The book addresses issues including identity, child characteristics, social support, and work. Each chapter includes a review of seminal literature, parents' comments and ideas about the topic, and a discussion of practice, policy, and research implications.Family Observational Coding Systems: Resources for Systemic Research
By Patricia K. Kerig, Kristin M. Lindahl. 2000
CODING MANUAL INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE FROM THE CHAPTER AUTHORS, AND THEIR E-MAIL ADDRESSES CAN BE FOUND ON PAGE XV OF…
THE BOOK.Family studies is an area that has enjoyed the benefits of conceptual and methodological advances in recent years including the widespread adoption of observational research techniques. The selection of an appropriate coding system is critical to achieving a better understanding of the complex family processes related to normative and pathological development. This book presents 14 examples of family observational coding systems, chosen for the wide range of constructs and phenomena they capture. Each system is described in detail, and excerpts from the coding manual are presented (links to the full coding manuals are available to purchasers of the book at LEA's Web site, www.erlbaum.com). Each chapter follows a consistent outline, so that the different coding systems can be more easily compared to one another. They include the theoretical underpinnings of the measure, its reliability and validity, the coding process, strategies for coder training, and examples of studies in which it has been used. This volume will prove invaluable to students and researchers in family studies, clinicians, and other practitioners who need to interpret data from family observations.Improving Father-Daughter Relationships: A Guide for Women and their Dads
By Linda Nielsen. 2021
Improving Father-Daughter Relationships: A Guide for Women and Their Dads is essential reading for daughters and their fathers, as well as for…
their families and for therapists. This friendly, no-nonsense book by father-daughter relationships expert, Dr. Linda Nielsen, offers women and their dads a step-by-step guide to improve their relationships and to understand the impact this will have on their well-being. Nielsen encourages us to get to the root of problems, instead of dealing with fallout, and helps us resolve the conflicts that commonly strain relationships from late adolescence throughout a daughter’s adult years. Showing how we can strengthen bonds by settling issues that divide us, her book explores a range of difficult issues from conflicts over money, to the daughter’s lifestyle or sexual orientation, to her parents’ divorce and dad’s remarriage. With quizzes and real-life examples to encourage us to examine beliefs that are limiting or complicating the connection between fathers and daughters, this guide helps us feel less isolated and enables us to create more joyful, honest, enriching relationships.Acute Emergencies and Critical Care of the Geriatric Patient

By Stefano Pallanti, Luana Salerno. 2020
This book highlights the importance of investigating for ADHD in adults with attention difficulties, poor memory and executive function impairments.…
The authors advocate a neurodevelopmental assessment approach in all phases of life, and explain how to perform such assessments. The identification of ADHD in adults with other psychiatric and neurological disorders will lead to a better response to treatments, and as a result reduce its social, economic and personal burden. ADHD can no longer be considered solely a pediatric condition, as it occurs in a significant proportion of adults worldwide. However, ADHD in adults is often unrecognized and untreated. Diagnosing the disorder in adulthood is a challenge, due not only to the different clinical presentation in this phase of life, but also to the fact that other conditions may mask the symptoms. ADHD constitutes a hidden comorbidity with a detrimental impact of those affected, and a poor response (or even non-response) to several treatments. Intended for psychiatrists, neurologists, specialists in gerontology and neuropsychology, this book is an indispensable resource for all mental health practitioners who want to optimize the treatment of patients affected by psychiatric and neurological disorders who respond poorly to standard treatments. What Retirees Want: A Holistic View of Life's Third Age
By Ken Dychtwald, Robert Morison. 2020
Throughout 99 percent of human history, life expectancy at birth was less than 18 years. Few people had a chance…
to age. Today, thanks to extraordinary medical, demographic, and economic shifts, most of us expect to live long lives. Consequently, the world is witnessing a powerful new version of retirement, driven by the power and needs of the Baby Boomer generation. Consumers over age 50 account for more than half of all spending and control more than 70% of our total net worth – yet are largely ignored by youth-focused marketers. How will work, family, and retirement be transformed to accommodate two billion people over the age of 60 worldwide? In the coming years, we'll see explosive business growth fueled by this unprecedented longevity revolution. What Retirees Want presents the culmination of 30 years of research by world-famous "Age Wave" expert Ken Dychtwald, Ph.D., and author and consultant Robert Morison. It explains how the aging of the Baby Boomers will forever change our lives, businesses, government programs, and the consumer marketplace. This exciting new stage of life, the "Third Age," poses daunting questions: • What will "old" look like in the years ahead? With continued advances in longevity, all of the traditional life-stage markers and boundaries will need to be adjusted. • What new products and services will boom as a result of this coming longevity revolution? • What unconscious ageist marketing practices are hurting people – and business growth? • Will the majority of elder boomers outlive their pensions and retirement savings and how can this financial disaster be prevented? • What incredible new technologies of medicine, life extension, and human enhancement await us in the near future? • What purposeful new roles can we create for elder boomers so that the aging nations of the Americas, Europe, and Asia capitalize on the upsides of aging? • Which pioneering organizations and companies worldwide have created marketing strategies and programs that resonate with the quirky and demanding Boomer generation? In this entertaining, thought-provoking, and wide-ranging book, Dychtwald and Morison explain how individuals, businesses, non-profits, and governments can best prepare for a new era--where the needs and demands of the "Third Age" will set the lifestyle, health, social, marketplace, and political priorities of generations to come.Television in the Nursing Home: A Case Study of the Media Consumption Routines and Strategies of Nursing Home Residents is…

By Michael Lewis, Candice Feiring. 1998
The problems of studying families arise from the difficulty in studying systems where there are multiple elements interacting with each…
other and with the child. How should this system be described? Still other problems relate to indirect effects; namely the influence of a particular dyad's interaction on the child when the child is not a member of the dyad. While all agree that the mother-father relationship has important bearing on the child's development, exactly how to study this--especially using observational techniques--remains a problem. While progress in studying the family has been slow, there is no question that an increase in interest in the family systems, as opposed to the mother-child relationship, is taking place. This has resulted in an increase in research on families and their effects. This volume, by leading figures in child development on families, attests to the growing sophistication of the conceptualization and measurement techniques for getting at family processes. The third in a series that aims to address topics relevant to the developmental problems and developmental disabilities of retardation, this volume is divided into two parts. Section 1 presents basic family processes and approaches for describing family dynamics. It deals with these issues from a broad perspective, including studying families at dinner, families in different cultural contexts, and the understanding of family in nonhuman primates. Section 2 looks at family processes in the service of studying families at-risk. The risk factors include poverty, malnutrition, and developmental delay and retardation. The study of family processes in these contexts provides data on family dynamics as well as how these dynamics impact on the children's developing competence. This volume will be informative for researchers, clinicians, and educators from a variety of disciplines and settings. The editors' aim is to bring a greater clarity to issues concerning the family life of children and highlight new research and possibilities for intervention.Psychosocial Intervention in Long-Term Care: An Advanced Guide

By Marta Zaraska. 2020
A smart, research-driven case for why optimism, kindness, and strong social networks will help us live to 100.From the day…
her daughter was born, science journalist Marta Zaraska fretted about what she and her family were eating. She fasted, considered adopting the keto diet, and ran a half-marathon. She bought goji berries and chia seeds and ate organic food. But then her research brought her to read countless scientific papers and to interview dozens of experts in various fields of study, including molecular biochemistry, epidemiology and neuroscience. What Marta discovered shattered her long-held beliefs about aging and longevity. A strong support network of family and friends, she learned, lowers mortality risk by about 45 percent, while exercise only lowers it by about 23 percent. Volunteering your free time lowers it by 22 percent or so, while certain health fads like turmeric haven't been shown to help at all. These revelations led Marta Zaraska to a simple conclusion: In addition to healthy nutrition and physical activity, deepening friendships, practicing empathy and contemplating your purpose in life can improve your lifespan. Through eleven chapters that take her around the world, from catching wild mice in the woods of central England to flower arranging with octogenarians in Japan, from laboratories to "hugging centres," Marta embarks on an absorbing, entertaining and insightful journey to determine the habits that will have the greatest impact on our longevity. Deeply researched and expertly reported, Growing Young will dramatically change the way you seek a longer, happier life.Mit Sterben und Tod besch 65533 ftigt sich jeder Mensch im Laufe des Lebens auch Menschen mit geistiger Behinderung…

Dementia: The Basics provides the reader with a clear and compassionate introduction to dementia and an accessible guide to dealing…
with different parts of the dementia journey, from pre-diagnosis and diagnosis to post-diagnostic support, increasing care needs and end of life care. Co-authored by an academic, a person living with dementia and a family carer, the book endeavours to raise awareness of dementia, challenge stereotypical and negative ideas about what it means to have dementia and champion a society where people living with dementia can be active as they wish for as long as possible. The authors present an overview of current research at each step of the dementia journey as well as including knowledge from lived experience, enhancing understanding and challenging thinking about what it might be like to live with a diagnosis or to care for a loved one. As a whole, the book emphasises the importance of prioritising the person living with dementia, as well as considering the impact of what any initiative or action might mean for them, their families and their care supporters. Offering both an accessible introduction to dementia and practical tools, this book will be ideal for health and social care professionals, students of social care, health care and nursing, people with dementia, carers and anyone wanting to understand more about the condition.Aspiration Pneumonia: The Current Clinical Giant for Respiratory Physicians (Respiratory Disease Series: Diagnostic Tools and Disease Managements)
By Shinji Teramoto, Kosaku Komiya. 2020
This book offers an essential overview of aspiration pneumonia, and focuses on four major aspects: epidemiology, pathophysiology, new preventive strategies,…
and trending topics. Each part presents detailed findings and insights into critical issues for the treatment of the disease including its diagnosis, assessment, selecting antibiotics, similarities and differences between aspiration risk and aspiration pneumonia risk, different therapeutic approaches and so on. The book also discusses emerging topics concerning the definition of NHCAP and sleep apnea. Special attention is given to therapeutic and preventive approaches for the elderly, highlighting recent advances and the evidence on their positive outcomes. Since the patients with this disorder are often in a post-stroke state and elderly, the book is highly relevant for neurologists and geriatric physicians. Further, many surgeons also face this type of pneumonia in association with postoperative complications and cancer therapy related complications. Lastly, the definition of aspiration pneumonia and its therapeutic strategy have yet to be established in many countries, and the data presented here should serve as a guideline for its future diagnosis and treatment. As such, the book offers a valuable resource for primary physicians, pulmonologists, gerontologists, respiratory nurses, physical therapists, dentists and otolaryngologists alike.
