This book presents the main theoretical and practical tools provided by behavior analysis to diagnose and treat substance use disorders.…
Based on the theoretical framework of radical behaviorism, first developed by B.F. Skinner, behavior analysis offers a distinctive biopsychosocial approach to substance use disorders by considering both the biogenetic and environmental influences on behaviors associated with substance use, enabling the development of more integrative and effective diagnostic, prevention, and treatment strategies at the individual and collective level. The volume is divided in three parts. Part one presents an introduction to core concepts in behavior analysis and related disciplines, such as behavioral pharmacology, and their specific applications in substance use disorders diagnostics and treatment. Part two shows how different types of behavioral-analytical clinical and social interventions can be applied in practice to treat substance use disorders, such as: Contingency ManagementExposure TherapyFunctional Analytical Psychotherapy (FAP)Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)Therapy by Contingencies of Reinforcement (TCR)Motivational InterviewingFinally, part three covers special topics, such as the interfaces between neurosciences and behavior analysis on drug use and dependence, effects of substance use in romantic relationships and their relationship with violence against women. Behavior Analysis and Substance Dependence will be a valuable tool for clinical and health psychologists, as well as other health professionals and social workers dealing with substance use disorders, by presenting, in one single volume, an overview of the tools offered by behavior analysis to deal with this serious health issue.By James O. Prochaska, John C. Norcross, Carlo C. Diclemente. 1994

Medical literature for health care practitioners on the evaluation and treatment of breastfeeding issues has been disjointed, conflicting, and difficult…
to find. The field of breastfeeding medicine itself is nonexistent--there are no "breastfeeding doctors" who are specifically trained to understand this complex and interactive process. While much of the literature about breastfeeding describes how it "should" work, there is currently nothing available to explain why it often fails and how to treat it. Clinician's Guide to Breastfeeding: Evidence-based Evaluation and Management is written for health care practitioners who work with breastfeeding mothers; physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, and lactation consultants. It provides clear information and clinically tested strategies to help professionals guide new mothers to breastfeed successfully. The first of its kind to consider the entirety of the breastfeeding experience,Clinician's Guide to Breastfeeding is written by Dr. Linda D. Dahl, a leading expert on the subject. It is a comprehensive review of breastfeeding, covering objective analyses of ideal or "normal" nursing, as well as the evaluation and treatment of abnormal nursing, including case studies to illustrate the treatment decision-making process.By Suhas Shetgovekar. 2018

In this deeply emotional memoir, a longtime ESPN writer reflects on the suicide of his son Max and delves into how…
their complicated relationship led him to see grief as love.In February 2015, Ivan Maisel received a call that would alter his life forever: his son Max's car had been found abandoned in a parking next to Lake Ontario. Two months later, Max's body would be found in the lake. There&’d been no note or obvious indication that Max wanted to harm himself; he&’d signed up for a year-long subscription to a dating service; he&’d spent the day he disappeared doing photography work for school. And this uncertainty became part of his father&’s grief. I Keep Trying to Catch His Eye explores with grace, depth, and refinement the tragically transformative reality of losing a child. But it also tells the deeply human and deeply empathetic story of a father&’s relationship with his son, of its complications, and of Max and Ivan&’s struggle—as is the case for so many parents and their children—to connect.I Keep Trying to Catch His Eye is a stunning, poignant exploration of the father and son relationship, of how our tendency to overlook men&’s mental health can have devastating consequences, and how ultimately letting those who grieve do so openly and freely can lead to greater healing.By Benjamin Van Rooij, Adam Fine. 2021
Freakonomics for the law—the revolutionary behavioral science insights into how the law fails to reduce misbehavior. Why do some laws radically…
change behavior whereas others are consistently ignored and routinely broken? Why do we keep relying on harsh punishment against crime even though it continues to fail?Professors Benjamin van Rooij and Adam Fine present the first accessible analysis of behavioral jurisprudence, which will fundamentally alter how we understand the connection between law and human behavior. Drawing upon decades of research, the authors reveal the behavioral code: the root causes and hidden forces that drive human behavior and our responses to society&’s laws. The Behavioral Code offers a necessary and different approach to battling crime and injustice that is based in understanding the science of human misconduct—rather than relying on punishment to shape behavior. The book will show how this code affects all of us using illustrative examples like:· Park rangers in Arizona&’s Petrified Forest who worked with social psychologists to reduce theft—beginning by throwing out &“no stealing&” signs· German walls that &“pee back&” at public urinators· A $2.3 billion legal settlement against Pfizer that revealed how whistleblower protections fail to reduce corporate malfeasance· NYC subway ads that reduced manspreading· How Richmond, California, reduced gun violence by offering young firearm offenders $1,000 monthly rewards for good behaviorRevelatory and counterintuitive, The Behavioral Code catalyzes the conversation about how the law can effectively improve human conduct and respond to some of our most pressing issues today, from police misconduct to corporate malfeasance.By Nadine Weidman. 2021
A historian of science examines key public debates about the fundamental nature of humans to ask why a polarized discourse…
about nature versus nurture became so entrenched in the popular sciences of animal and human behavior. Are humans innately aggressive or innately cooperative? In the 1960s, bestselling books enthralled American readers with the startling claim that humans possessed an instinct for violence inherited from primate ancestors. Critics responded that humans were inherently loving and altruistic. The resulting debate—fiercely contested and highly public—left a lasting impression on the popular science discourse surrounding what it means to be human. Killer Instinct traces how Konrad Lorenz, Robert Ardrey, and their followers drew on the sciences of animal behavior and paleoanthropology to argue that the aggression instinct drove human evolutionary progress. Their message, spread throughout popular media, brought pointed ripostes. Led by the anthropologist Ashley Montagu, opponents presented a rival vision of human nature, equally based in biological evidence, that humans possessed inborn drives toward love and cooperation. Over the course of the debate, however, each side accused the other of holding an extremist position: that behavior was either determined entirely by genes or shaped solely by environment. Nadine Weidman shows that what started as a dispute over the innate tendencies of animals and humans transformed into an opposition between nature and nurture. This polarized formulation proved powerful. When E. O. Wilson introduced his sociobiology in 1975, he tried to rise above the oppositional terms of the aggression debate. But the controversy over Wilson’s work—led by critics like the feminist biologist Ruth Hubbard—was ultimately absorbed back into the nature-versus-nurture formulation. Killer Instinct explores what happens and what gets lost when polemics dominate discussions of the science of human nature.By Jessica Dore. 2021
