Psychoanalysis and Education: Minding a Gap
By Linden West, Alan Bainbridge. 2012
This book provides a unique and highly topical application of psychoanalytic theory to the broad context of education, including schools,…
universities, and adult learning. Education is understood as a crucial element in a lifelong project to gain more coherent and meaningful understanding of self and others. Psychoanalysis has taken the contingency, construction, and development of human subjectivity, as well as the difficulty of thinking, to be its prime preoccupation. Yet - at a time of increasing doubt and anxiety about the purposes and practice of education - psychoanalytic understanding, from various traditions, has never been more marginal in educational debate. The book seeks, in these terms, to bridge some of this gap: it is written for teachers, trainers, policy-makers, clinicians, researchers, and diverse academics who want to look beyond bland superficialities to deeper struggles for self and understanding. This includes unconscious processes in the relationships that constitue education as well as resistance to new ideas and practices.Paradigms in Psychoanalysis: An Integration
By Marco Bacciagaluppi. 2012
This book aims at making explicit the scientific theories, termed paradigms, that the author has found useful in psychoanalysis. It…
lists nine paradigms: genetics, neurobiology, attachment theory, infant research, trauma, their relational model, the family system, the socio-cultural level, and prehistory. These nine paradigms are presented in as many chapters. Special attention is devoted to attachment theory, which the author considers to be the most powerful conceptual tool at the disposal of the psychoanalyst. He also covers trauma, the relational model - with special reference to Ferenczi, Bowlby and Fromm. He explores the effect of cultural evolution, with the advent of agriculture, on family and character structures and the resulting discontinuity with the individual, or group's inborn needs, giving rise to an unnatural environment, and thus to psychopathology and pathology at a social level, such as war. The consequence of these combined factors gives rise to the need for psychotherapy, this is explored, together with the role of the therapist and the therapy of psychoses,Love and Other Emotions: On the Process of Feeling
By Jason W. Brown. 2012
This book is an account of the psychology of romantic love in the context of a theory of emotions. The…
account develops out of studies in brain psychology and the extension to topics in process-philosophy, such as the nature of value and belief, and the central role of feeling in mental process. The approach is subjectivist, that is, from the internal standpoint, and in this respect it differs greatly from the externalist and objectivist trends in modern cognitive science and empiricist philosophy. Love is the ultimate in value, so that a theory of love is also a theory of the nature of value and its relation to feeling, belief, and to drive and desire. The role of intention, reason, and appraisal is critiqued. The relation to other feelings, such as jealousy, envy, anger, loss and grief is discussed in terms of a general theory of emotion and the basis in a process account of the mind/brain state.Love Bombing: Reset Your Child's Emotional Thermostat
By Oliver James. 2012
"Love Bombing" is a radical new method for resetting the emotional thermostats of troubled children and their parents, setting them…
on a much happier trajectory. It is simple to do, easily explained and works for both severe and mild problems from aged three to early teenage. Many, if not most, parents feel that their children may have missed out in some way during the early years. Offering a simple, relatively trouble-free self-help method for putting that right is what parents are waiting for. "This book is written in highly accessible language", assures Oliver James. "The method is explained as simply as possible, illustrated with cases". "Love Bombing is a very simple technique which helps most children from aged three to early teenage. Because so many parents are, or have had, periods of living very busy or miserable or complicated lives, most of us need to reconnect with our children from time to time. Love Bombing does the job," explains James.Kabbalah and Psychoanalysis: More Explorations Of Psychoanalysis And Kabbalah
By Michael Eigen. 2012
Wilfred Bion once said, "I use the Kabbalah as a framework for psychoanalysis." Both are preoccupied with catastrophe and faith,…
infinity and intensity of experience, shatter and growth of being that supports dimensions which sensitivity opens. Both are preoccupied with ontological implications of the Unknown and the importance of emotional life. This work is a psychospiritual adventure touching the places Kabbalah and psychoanalysis give something to each other. Michael Eigen uses aspects of Bion, Winnicott, Akivah, Luria and Nachman (and many more) as colours on a palette to open realities for growth of experience. Bion called faith "the psychoanalytic attitude" and Eigen here explores creative, paradoxical, multidimensional aspects of faith. Eigen previously wrote of psychoanalysis as a form of prayer in The Psychoanalytic Mystic. In Kabbalah and Psychoanalysis he writes of creative faith. Sessions as crucibles in which diverse currents of personality mix in new ways, alchemy or soul chemistry perhaps, or simply homage to our embryonic nature which responds to the breath of feeling moment to moment.Independent Psychoanalysis Today

By Antonio Perez-Sanchez. 2012
The book deals with initial interviews in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, suggesting the idea of special "indicators". These indicators relate to…
three main areas. Firstly, psychoanalytical understanding of initial interviews to evaluate the patient's suitability for a psychoanalytically based treatment, discussing the dynamics, aims and technique of the interview. Three areas to be explored in the interview are considered: psychopathological data; biographical data, and data arising from the interaction of the patient with the therapist in the interview itself. Secondly, part of the book is devoted to the definition and description of what the author calls "indicators" for the therapist to build a personality profile showing suitability for psychoanalytic treatment. The main theoretical bases of the book are Freud, Klein and Bion. A third part deals with the controversial issue of the differentiation between psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The specificity of psychoanalysis is defined in comparison with psychotherapy. A specific psychoanalytic method and setting may be created as well as a specific psychotherapeutic method and setting. In Search of the Spiritual: Gabriel Marcel, Psychoanalysis and the Sacred

as it passes among us it shows our creativity and our ability to co-operate even while it can also lead us to fight to the death. This book is for psychological therapists and for the general reader interested in human nature. Money has mattered since the first human attempts to symbolise value and enable people to wait for the return on their own labours. Since the financial crisis of 2008 its impact at a macro as well as a micro level is inescapable. It has become a means of exchange, much like language and has opened up social mobility to factors other than birth. This book looks at the origin of money and its history but most of all, what attitudes to money tell us about the way we connect to each other.Healing Intelligence: The Spirit in Psychotherapy - Working with Darkness and Light

their reflections and thoughts on the issues of race, culture, and ethnicity in the therapeutic relationship. The aim is to develop this area of systemic practice, to place culture squarely at the centre of all systemic psychotherapy practice as a model for all psychotherapy practice, to encourage both trainees and experienced systemic psychotherapists to pay attention to race, culture, and ethnicity as central issues in their own and their clients' identities, and to inform researchers who use qualitative research techniques such as ethnography. This book moves the issues of culture, race and equity into the centre of psychotherapeutic practice, including that which involves therapeutic encounters across culture, racial and ethnic divides. It develops an approach to cultural transference and demonstrates that thinking about culture, race and ethnicity does not belong at the margin.Broken Bounds: Contemporary Reflections on the Antisocial Tendency (Winnicott Studies Monograph Ser.)

of lectures on the theme of "the antisocial tendency". These lectures are offered here to the wider public much as they were originally given. The speakers, each one an established figure in child care policy or in the residential and therapeutic management of disaffected youngsters, reflect on society's changing attitudes towards antisocial behaviour and its manifestations over the past half century. They consider how altered childrearing practices, the greater incidence of family break-up, and the increasing part played by central government in the determination of child care policies, have contributed to a shift towards the more punitive attitudes towards "wayward youth" prevalent today. Brief, pointed, and accessible, these lectures address topics of contemporary social concern by identifying some of the underlying questions to be asked regarding the child, the family, and society in a mass-communication and mass-organized environment.Bion and Being: Passion and the Creative Mind
By Annie Reiner. 2012
With his concept of "O," Wilfred Bion provided a new psychoanalytic space in which to explore the mind. Dr Annie…
Reiner's new book, Bion and Being: Passion and the Creative Mind, examines the similarities between this psychoanalytic space and the artist's creative sensibility, as well as mystical and religious states. This most mysterious and revolutionary of Bion's analytic ideas reflects what is essentially a state of being, an experience of mental integrity and union between emotional and rational functions of the mind which is the basis of thinking and creativity. In an effort to provide emotional understanding to Bion's theoretical ideas, Dr Reiner uses examples of artists, poets, writers, theologians, and philosophers, including Rilke, Cummings, Shakespeare, Beckett, and Nietzsche, to illustrate these psychoanalytic concepts. She also presents detailed clinical examples of patient's dreams to explore the obstacles to these states of being, as well as how to work clinically to develop access to these creative states.Being a Therapist: A Practitioner's Handbook

other practitioners and describes a new and effective form of dynamic therapy designed for working with adults and with adolescents. The theory, on which the new form of therapy is based, is centred in a paradigm that extends and crucially alters the paradigm for developmental psychology opened by the Bowlby/Ainsworth attachment theory. It describes a pre-programmed process, the dynamics sustaining attachment and interest sharing, which is activated as soon as people perceive that they are in danger. This process is made up of seven pre-programmed systems which interact with one another as an integrated whole. They include Bowlby's two complementary goal-corrected behavioural systems: attachment (also referred to as careseeking) and caregiving. Whenever the process is able to function effectively, it enables people to adapt more constructively and co-operatively to changing circumstances.
