By David Donnison, Alan Middleton. 1987
Originally published in 1987, Regenerating the Inner City looks at the changes to Glasgow’s East End and how industrial closures…
and slum clearance projects have caused people to leave. This is reflected across the western world, and causes severe blows to cities where these industries are located. The book draws on Glasgow’s Eastern Area Renewal Scheme, the first big urban renewal project in Britain. The contributors to the volume come from a range of disciplines and form practical conclusions for policy-makers, and community activists. The book uses door-to-door surveys in Glasgow’s east end, and interviews with community groups to gain an authentic understanding of the issue.Ling Stu Of Dev Scient Vocab Ara

Educational Responses to Adult Unemployment (Routledge Library Editions: Adult Education)
By Barbara Senior, John Naylor. 1987
Originally published in 1987, at a time of high unemployment, this book provides a critical analysis of the role played…
by education in solving unemployment. It examines the practical, social and psychological effects of unemployment on adults and argues that formal institutional responses are inadequate within any long term perspective, and that it is rather community, informal and often unofficial initiatives that will provide learning experiences for unemployed people.First published in 1987. Many Victorian novels that considered social problems made extensive use of contemporary source material for their…
descriptions. This book aims to provide a greater acquaintance with this non-literary material — illustrating and exemplifying issues that the authors treated imaginatively. The material is divided into parts dealing with: the industrial north of England, London and the agricultural poor. Extracts from writings that bear directly on the fiction of writers like Dickens and Gaskell are featured, as are Government Blue Books and newspaper reports and articles. This volume also contains articles by Dickens and others, from his magazine, Household Words. The Origins Of War In South Asia: Indo-pakistani Conflicts Since 1947
By Sumit Ganguly. 1987
In examining the forces that made the Indo-Pakistani relationship prone to conflict, Dr. Ganguly focusses first on the nature of…
the British colonial disengagement policy, a hasty and ill-conceived procedure that served to exacerbate the ideological differences between India's major political parties, the Congress and the Muslim League. Their competing views–the Congress espoused a secular polity while the League drew its inspiration from Islamic tenets–formed the basis of the two polities that emerged from the collapse of the British Indian empire. Disputes also arose over the uncertain status of Kashmir. With the lapse of the British doctrine of paramountcy (recognition of the British as the sovereign power in India), the so-called princely states had to join either India or Pakistan on the basis of geographic location and demographic composition. Kashmir posed a problem because of its location and because it had a Hindu monarch ruling a Muslim majority population. This peculiar status made it the center of a Pakistani irredentist claim. This claim was rejected by India, iintent upon demonstrating that all minorities could thrive under the aegis of secular government. Once set in motion by the interplay of domestic, regional, and systematic factors, these three forces--disengagement, ideological differences, and the conflict over Kashmir--brought the subcontinent to war in 1947-1948, 1965, and 1971. Dr. Ganguly provides a comprehensive and comparative analysis of these three Indo-Pakistani conflicts as well as an assessment of both the impact of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan on the security of South Asia and the changes in the perceptions of that security.Originally published in 1987. The Consumption Theory of Land Rent or CTLR is a comprehensive model of the urban landscape…
developed by Grant Ian Thrall. Working from the basic idea that the same underlying processes account for the spatial structure of all places, Thrall shows how CTLR can be used as a tool to explain and predict the long-term consequences of policy decisions by governments, such as introducing light rail rapid transit, or parameter changes in the economy, such as a general rise in real income. Thrall’s methodology for the analysis of land rent and land use in a significant research accomplishment and a major analytical tool for students and professionals within city planning, regional science, urban geography, and urban economics.Politics and Leisure (Routledge Library Editions: Leisure Studies #Vol. 5)
By John Wilson. 1988
First published in 1988. This book provides a lucid and exceptionally well-informed account at the controversial relationship between politics and…
leisure. The author combines historical and sociological material to show the ways in which ‘leisure’ has often been a fiercely disputed battleground. Free time and free space have always posed a threat to political authorities, while providing room for experimentation and expression for the citizenry. This has led to extensive attempts at leisure regulation; John Wilson examines the purposes and effectiveness of such regulation in the fields of games sexuality, the mass media, and gambling. He is able to draw on evidence of leisure planning and policy from a wide variety of political regimes, from communist and socialist through social democrat to liberal, conservative, and fascist. The importance of the relationship between political forces and leisure, in subjects as disparate as the future of the Olympic games and the future of full employment, has rarely been so evident. John Wilson has provided an excellent guide to its intricacies.Art, Research, Philosophy
By Clive Cazeaux. 2017
Art, Research, Philosophy explores the emergent field of artistic research: art produced as a contribution to knowledge. As a new…
subject, it raises several questions: What is art-as-research? Don’t the requirements of research amount to an imposition on the artistic process that dilutes the power of art? How can something subjective become objective? What is the relationship between art and writing? Doesn’t description always miss the particularity of the artwork? This is the first book-length study to show how ideas in philosophy can be applied to artistic research to answer its questions and to make proposals for its future. Clive Cazeaux argues that artistic research is an exciting development in the historical debate between aesthetics and the theory of knowledge. The book draws upon Kant, phenomenology and critical theory to show how the immediacies of art and experience are enmeshed in the structures that create knowledge. The power of art to act on these structures is illustrated through a series of studies that look closely at a number of contemporary artworks. This book will be ideal for postgraduate students and scholars of the visual and creative arts, aesthetics and art theory.First published in 1987. Unemployment is currently the major economic concern in developed economies. This book provides a comprehensive analysis…
of the economics of unemployment. It concentrates on theories of the labour market and examines the critical inter-relationships with the rest of the economy. It provides a thorough evaluation of theory and extensive consideration of the relevant empirical evidence. It emphasises the multi-causal nature of unemployment and concludes that policy-makers should respond with a multi-faceted mix of policies.China Through The Ages: History Of A Civilization
By Franz Michael. 1987
Past studies of China have concentrated on specific events or have related a chronological history of the dynastic periods. These…
works have included aspects of cultural history but have underemphasized the country's great social, political, and intellectual movements and their ultimate expression in the art and literature of the time. By focusing on such themes, Professor Michael provides a new framework for understanding the Chinese cultural tradition. The author describes the evolving history of ideas in China, from ancient faith in powerful magic to more modern concepts of a logical moral order of the universe and mankind's place in it. He also explores the intellectual ferment following the dawn of the age of reason, the integration of Buddhism into the Confucian social order, and the social transformations accompanying the rise and fall of the centralized state. Throughout, he illustrates how the changing society's beliefs, values, and aesthetic sense were embodied in its art and literature. This portrayal of the Chinese cultural tradition not only puts Chinese history in a new perspective, it also illuminates the process through which China constructed a modern society from a non-Western foundation and serves as an essential tool for understanding modern-day China and its prospects for the future. The Social Basis of Community Care (Routledge Revivals)
By Martin Bulmer. 1987
Care for the elderly, disabled and mentally-ill within and by the community forms a vital part of current social policy.…
Martin Bulmer argues that this policy is inadequately thought out and rests on a series of poorly founded sociological assumptions. As a result there is a vacuum at the heart of government’s social care policy which is likely to lead to ineffective or deteriorating provision for those in need. This book, first published in 1987, will be essential reading for all those concerned with the organization and delivery of social care, whether as students, practitioners or teachers. It will be particularly useful for courses dealing with social policy, the personal social services and the social context of social work.Subsistence And Change: Lessons Of Agropastoralism In Somalia
By Garth Massey. 1988
Focusing on an agropastoral society of southcentral Somalia, this book explores the seeming incompatibility of subsistence agriculture and development goals.…
Based upon survey and ethnographic research carried out among the Rahanweyn, the study pays particular attention to economic activities, linking them with environmental factors as well as with history, culture, the division of labor and women's roles, family structure, demography, and herding and agriculture. How change can best be introduced into such a society is the central question of the book. The meaning of subsistence and its relationship to self-sufficiency and a survival threshold are examined within the context of an externally imposed market system. The implications of rapidly induced market involvement in a traditional society are looked at in light of data on a range of subsistence societies. The author argues for a redirection of development practices, making a case for the viability of a mixed agropastoral system that diverges little from the traditional subsistence patterns, and for peasant-centered development compatible with subsistence production, balancing national and international interests.Persuasions and Prejudices: An Informal Compendium of Modern Social Science, 1953-1988
By Irving Horowitz. 1988
Review essays and statements written for special occasions may reveal as much about the writer as those written about; this…
is the presumption undergirding this collection of thirty-five years of criticism and commentary by Irving Louis Horowitz. For this volume, he selected his comments on famous, near famous, and infamous sociologists, political scientists, and assorted literary figures in between. Taken as a whole, this volume will surprise and delight readers who are acquainted with Horowitz's other works as well as those who are interested in the people he writes about. The book covers notable social scientists, from Arendt to Zetterberg, and such major figures in between as Becker, Bell, de Jouvenel, Mills, Parsons, Solzhenitsyn, and more than eighty others who have had an effect on the contemporary social and political landscape. Each is critically examined, sometimes positively, other times negatively. Horowitz was a major figure in his own right, and his writing here displays the kind of refreshing frankness experts will expect and the general reader will appreciate. The underlying assumption behind the volume, giving its disparate parts a unified characteristic, is that together these observations on others amount to a general perspective on social science held by the author. Whether his larger ambition is accepted or disputed, there is no doubt that the volume provides a standard against which to measure the literary quality of writing in the world of professional social research. The essays in this book, first published in 1988, explore the changes that have occurred in the modern harbour in…
the 1970s and 1980s and the many roles of the public port in stimulating or responding to these changes. The goal of this study is to understand the modern harbour and public port and the contemporary pressures on them. The contributors’ disciplines range among geography, law, business, political science, and marine affairs.Inside MTV
By R. Serge Denisoff. 1988
MTV is the third major breakthrough in music broadcasting, and the first since the late 1960s. ""Top Forty"" radio was…
initiated in the 1950s, and along with ""free form"" or ""progressive"" rock molded rock music exposure for nearly twenty years. Many observers credit MTV with resurrecting the music industry from the throes of the Great Depression of 1979. Few would dispute its impact on contemporary film, fashion, and radio.Inside MTV examines the world of cablecasting, the evolution of WASEC, MTV, VH-1, and some of their competitors. The strategies, personalities, promotions, and the contents that placed MTV on the road to its dominant position are described. The many controversies surrounding the channel are thoroughly detailed, and a good deal of the misinformation on the subject is corrected. It is a mere five years since MTV began as the third of four Warner-Amex Satellite Entertainment Company (WASEC) channels, created by two of America's largest conglomerates. Since then, it has become a major force. Before MTV was conceived the relationship between television and rock music was weak, at best. As the new partnership .developed, a story of genius, luck, and discrimination began to unfold, and a corporate innovation of major proportions and psychodemographic success emerged.MTV is now the most profitable 24-hour cable outlet beamed from a satellite. It reaches 30.8 million households. How all this happened is chronicled in this major new book from a leading authority on the American music business.First published in 1975. Using estate records, local newspapers and parliamentary papers, this book focuses upon two central and interrelated…
subjects – the rural economy and the land question – from the perspective of Cork, Ireland’s southernmost country. The author examines the chief responses of Cork landlords, tenant farmers and labourers to the enormous difficulties besetting them after 1815. He shows how the great famine of the late 1840s was in many ways an economic and social watershed because it rapidly accelerated certain previous trends and reversed the direction of others. He also rejects the conventional view of the land war of the 1880s, arguing that in Cork it was essentially a ‘revolution of rising expectations’, in which tenant farmers struggled to preserve their substantial material gains since 1850 by using the weapons of ‘agrarian trade unionism’, civil disobedience and unprecedented violence. This title will be of interest to students of rural history and historical geography.Critical Studies in Teacher Education: Its Folklore, Theory and Practice (Routledge Revivals)
By Thomas S. Popkewitz. 1987
Originally published in 1987, this was the only available book to offer a critical interpretation of the current reform efforts…
in teacher education at the time. The focus is issues of professionalization, the role of the university and schools in the socialization of teachers, and the ideological and social assumptions that underlie educational theory. The book draws upon the sociology of knowledge, Marxist theory and political sociology.Originally published in 1987. In this book we find songs reflecting every aspect of life in the twentieth-century Royal Navy,…
both upper and lower deck: war, ship’s routine, aviation, submarines, the antics of dockyard personnel, not to mention the matelot’s shore-going adventures, both amorous and bibulous. The compiler was well-known as a folk-singer, though he began his career in the Royal Navy. Based on his personal collection of Navy songs, this book proves that the sailor’s muse did not desert him with the passing of the sailing ship. It also dispels the notion that the modern Jack Tar, when he produces any songs at all, confines himself to the pornographic. With the songs, Cyril Tawney interweaves a commentary on the Royal Navy setting, providing a backdrop to the sailor’s own words. This book is of enduring appeal to all who have served as well as to students of twentieth-century oral tradition.
