By Laura Huang. 2020
SHORTLISTED FOR THE BUSINESS BOOK AWARDS 2021How do you find a competitive edge when you feel like the world is…
against you? How do you get people to take you seriously when they're predisposed not to?Star Harvard Business School professor Laura Huang has come up against that problem many times - and so has anyone who's ever felt out of place or underrecognised. Many of us sit back quietly, hoping that our hard work and grit will speak for themselves. Or we force ourselves to fit the mold of what we perceive as 'successful', stifling the creativity and charm that makes us memorable. In this perfect guide for ambitious readers of Amy Cuddy's Presence and Angela Duckworth's Grit looking for the missing piece that will take them to the next level, Huang offers a different approach. She argues that success is rarely about the quality of your ideas, your credentials and skills or the effort you put in. Instead, it's about how well you shape others' perceptions - about your strengths, yes, but also about your flaws. It's about creating an edge by confronting the factors that seem like shortcomings and turning them into assets that persuade others to take notice.Drawing from her research on gut feeling, pitching and investment decisions, as well as stories about previously overlooked Olympians, assistants-turned executives and first-time entrepreneurs, Huang shows that success comes from knowing who you are and using that knowledge unapologetically and strategically. This book will teach you how to find your unique edge and keep it sharp.A Brief Guide to Smart Thinking: From Zeno’s Paradoxes to Freakonomics

They survive injury in the military, and campaign across the country to raise awareness about the emotional difficulties linked to combat service. These people bounce back from horrendous trauma that would emotionally and physically cripple most people. They flourish with renewed resolve to face any problem with grace and ease. Knowing how people in challenging circumstances such as these transition from ordinary to extraordinary gives us the knowledge to transform our own lives without first suffering trauma. Be Extraordinary reveals a life-changing formula that will lead us on the path to being extraordinary even when we encounter setbacks along the way. Jennifer Wild has discovered that overcoming adversity and becoming extraordinary tap the same factor. People who flourish with or without trauma as their catalyst naturally draw on seven key processes - the unwavering belief in recovering against all odds, the conviction to reach one's goals, the courage to focus on the future rather than the past, and the invaluable, necessary conscious and continuous process of updating out-dated memories and self-concepts. These factors drive people to overcome adversity. They drive people to become extraordinary. Some people have them. Some people don't. This book is about what those factors are, how to get them and why they work. Linking science to achievable transformation, Dr Wild reveals the seven processes and gives inspiring real-life examples of how ordinary people have used them to come through astonishing adversity. Offering an accessible, practical no-nonsense plan of how to overcome everyday setbacks, this is the essential guide if you want to Be Extraordinary. All in Her Head: A page-turning thriller perfect for fans of Harriet Tyce

HeatThe Dance Cure: The surprising secret to being smarter, stronger, happier
By Peter Lovatt. 1984
“Peter has brilliantly put into words what I have felt my whole dancing life: that the power of dance can…
liberate and change all our lives.” Darcey BussellHumans are born to dance. And in today’s sedentary world, we would all benefit from doing more of it. Science shows that just ten minutes of dancing provides a thorough work out for the body and brain, raising the heartbeat to cause a release of feel-good endorphins, connecting us to our emotions and reducing our stress levels. Dancing quite simply makes us feel more alive.Dr Peter Lovatt, a former professional dancer turned dance psychologist, has spent the past two decades studying why we dance and what it does for us, and is on a personal mission to make dancing as natural an activity in our daily lives as walking or drinking coffee.Filled with fascinating case studies from his research as well as great stories from dance history, The Dance Cure will inspire even those who think they “can’t dance” to turn the music on, get up on the floor and dance themselves happy.A PARADIGM SHIFT FOR CAREGIVERS THAT WILL REVOLUTIONIZE THE WAY YOU APPROACH, TREAT OR PARENT A CHILD WITH CHALLENGING OR…
EXPLOSIVE BEHAVIOURS. When you are confronted with a child who is troubled, disruptive, oppositional, defiant or angry - whether you are a parent or a teacher - it can be difficult to know the best way to support them. Traditional methods of 'shaping' a child's behaviour can often be at best ineffective, at worst distressing, for child and adult alike.Drawing on 30 years of experience, internationally known paediatric psychologist Dr Mona Delahooke describes these troubled behaviours as the 'tip of the iceberg', important signals that point to deeper, individual differences in the child that we need to understand and address before we can resolve behavioural challenges. Using the very latest neuroscientific research Beyond Behaviours makes the case that many children who can't seem to behave simply don't have the developmental capacity to do so - yet. This book uses neuroscientific findings to help you deconstruct behaviour challenges, and to discover their cause and triggers for your child. It will show you how to apply this knowledge across a variety of behaviour spectrums, from children diagnosed with autism or other forms of neurodiversity, to those who might have been exposed to toxic stress or trauma during their early years. There are practical strategies to implement at every stage, backed up by impactful worksheets and charts, with a strong emphasis not on 'managing' behaviour, but instead on helping children and families build positive experiences to counteract the stress and pressure felt by everybody when you're working, or living, with a child who has behavioural challenges. Accessible, practical, warmly supportive and steeped in research and clinical expertise, Beyond Behaviours offers a break-through book which guides us - parents and caregivers alike - to the realisation that the most important tool in our toolkit is always our connection with the child standing in front of us.Psychiatric Ideologies and Institutions
By Anselm L. Strauss. 1981
The authors of this volume point out that what is ordinarily termed the psychiatric hospital's "social structure" is principally derived…
from three sources: the number and kinds of professionals who work there; the treatment ideologies and professional identities of these professionals; and the relationships of the institution and its professionals to outside communities, both professional and lay. They describe hospitals as sites where ideological battles characterizing the mental health arena are being fought, implemented, critiqued, modified, and transformed. This classic monograph in medical sociology was originally published in the 1960s. The period studied was 1958 through 1963, when somatic and psychotherapeutic ideologies were flourishing—as now—and milieutherapy was just emerging. The research team was multidisciplinary: three sociologists, one psychologist, and one psychiatrist. Three distinct psychiatric environments were researched: two at the Chicago State Hospital—"chronic services" and "treatment services"—and one at a private hospital. What evolved were thoughtful comparative analyses of hospitals, wards, professionals, ideological positions, careers, and organizational and situational placements.Stigma: A Social Psychological Analysis

Trends and Prospects in Metacognition Research across the Life Span: A Tribute to Anastasia Efklides
By Despina Moraitou, Panayiota Metallidou. 2021
This volume brings together trends and their prospects to understand the complexity of metacognitive phenomena, with emphasis on the interactions…
of metacognition with affect. It discusses the three perspectives in understanding these interactions: the possible mechanisms underlying them, the manifestation of interactions of metacognition with affect in self- and co-regulation in social and educational contexts, and changes during development in young children and older adults. This volume is a tribute to Professor Emerita Anastasia Efklides, who was among the pioneers to investigate and argue the importance of the interactions between metacognition and affect. It serves as a dedication to her contribution in the widening of the scope of research in metacognition and self-regulated learning.Self-Compassion – Emotionales Coping bei chronischen Erkrankungen: Moderator zwischen neurologischen Symptomen und subjektivem Wohlfühlen
By Christiane Andrea Fahlböck. 2021
Animal and Human Conduct (Psychology Library Editions: Comparative Psychology)
By William E. Ritter. 1927
Originally published in 1928, this title looks at the link between animal and human conduct. It had long been recognized…
on the basis of their activities that many animals possess minds, and that these are similar in a considerable number of respects to human minds. According to the author, this book looks at man’s position within nature from the perspective of a naturalist, rather than a psychologist or philosopher. He has attempted to describe the working of mind and body in human beings and in other living things; to examine critically the mental technique involved in such descriptions; and to reason broadly as to the bearings of the facts and processes on human life. Now it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.Logical Abilities in Children: Reasoning in Adolescence: Deductive Inference (Logical Abilities in Children #3)
By Daniel N. Osherson. 1975
Originally published in 1975, this volume (3 of 4) presents an expanded model of certain deductive abilities in children and…
adults. A partial explanation of the growth of these abilities was suggested in Volume 2 of this series, and it is amplified here, both with regard to propositional logic and the logic of class inclusion. A new methodology is employed, the issue of the effect of content in deductive reasoning is covered, and developmental questions are reformulated. Although only data from experiments with adolescents are presented here, the volume sets the stage for potentially illustrating developmental comparisons, a topic pursued in Volume 4 of this novel and inventive series.Logical Abilities in Children: Reasoning and Concepts (Logical Abilities in Children #4)
By Daniel N. Osherson. 1976
Originally published in 1976, this fourth and final volume in a series that met with critical acclaim is concerned with…
a certain kind of answer to the question "What distinguishes the concepts that are a natural part of human languages from those that are merely expressible in language?" The kind of answers contemplated rely on formal properties of the logics that overlay the two sorts of concepts. The author presents a substantive theory of natural concepts which helps to make concrete the methodological proposals. In order to make the theory more manageable, it is restricted to sentential modifiers expressed in English. Although these proposals are substantive, the methodology they exemplify may be of even more significance. Some of the ideas in the author’s approach derive from the work of Chomsky, and several issues relevant to the growth of logical thinking are also treated with data that speak to questions raised in Volume 3, concerning qualitative change through development. This final volume in the series will be essential reading for all concerned with both logical abilities in children, their development, and novel methodological approaches to research bearing on this and related issues.
