Within the annals of Alamo and Texas Revolutionary historiography, the important contributions of the Irish in winning the struggle against…

Mexico and establishing a new republic are noticeably absent. Breaking new ground with fresh views and original insights, Phillip Thomas Tucker’s The Forgotten Defenders of the Alamo: The Irish of the Texas Revolution, 1835-1836, sets forth one of the best remaining untold stories of the Alamo and Texas Revolution by exploring a largely forgotten and long ignored history: the dramatic saga of the Irish in Texas. Dr. Tucker has thoroughly explored a hidden history long ignored by generations of historians. Relying upon a wealth of previously unexplored primary sources, The Forgotten Defenders of the Alamo is the first book devoted to the dramatic story of Irish achievements, contributions, and sacrifices in winning independence for Texas. In doing so, Tucker’s study bestows much-needed recognition upon the Irish and shatters a host of long-existing stereotypes and myths about the Texas Revolution. Reflecting a distinctive cultural, political, and military heritage, the Irish possessed a lengthy and distinguished Emerald Isle revolutionary tradition reborn during the Texas uprising of 1835-1836. The Irish were the largest immigrant group in Texas at the time and among the most vocal and passionate of liberty-loving revolutionaries in all Texas. Symbolically, the largely Ireland-born garrison of Goliad raised the first flag of Texas Independence months before the Alamo’s fall. More than a dozen natives of Ireland fought and died at the Alamo, and the old Franciscan mission’s garrison primarily consisted of soldiers of Scotch-Irish descent. From 1835-1836, Irish Protestants and Catholics made invaluable and disproportionate contributions in the struggle for Texas Independence that will no longer pass unrecognized. Presented not only as a military history of the Irish in the Texas Revolution, but also as a social, economic, and cultural history of the Irish in Texas, The Forgotten Defenders of the Alamo will stand as a long-overdue corrective to the outdated “standard” views of the story of the Alamo and the Texas Revolution.

A gripping account of one of the Royal Navy’s most significant modern warships.

The HMS Invincible is a ship whose…

eventful life story, it is argued, embodies that of the Royal Navy itself during the second half of the 20th century and into the 21st. From her conception and design, through her various deployments (including the Falklands) and her evolving role and technical adaptation to meet changing strategic requirements, her fluctuating fortunes have been intertwined with those of the Royal Navy as a whole. Now, as a new breed of carriers is being commissioned to replace her, this thoroughly researched analysis of her career is the perfect platform from which to ask the important questions regarding the future role of the Royal Navy and Britain’s place in the world.

The generation of young men and women who joined the British Army during the mid to late 1980s would serve…

their country during an unprecedented period of history. Unlike the two world war generations, they would never face total war – there was never any declaration of war and there was no one single country to defeat. In fact, it was supposed to have been the end of war, a time of peace and stability. Politicians started to use the term, Peace Dividend, with government officials even planning on how and where it should be spent. But for those in the military, the two decades following the end of the Cold War would not be a time of peace. Government spending and the size of the military was reduced but the Army’s commitments increased exponentially. Those serving not only faced continuous deployment in overseas operations, they would also be involved in immense upheavals that took place within the army. When the Berlin Wall came down, the British Army had not changed for decades. The ending of the Cold War, combined with a technological revolution, a changing society at home, and new global threats mean that the Army of the second decade of the twentieth-first century – the army this generation of soldiers is now retiring from – is unrecognizable from the one they joined in the late 1980s. This is the story of the soldiers who served in the British Army in those tumultuous decades. Product Details About the Author Table of Contents

The Latin epic poem The Aeneid, which was written between 29 and 19 BC by Virgil, narrates the narrative of…

Aeneas, a Trojan who fled the collapse of Troy and made his way to Italy, where he eventually settled and became the progenitor of the Romans. It has 9,896 dactylic hexameter lines. The poem's second half describes the Trojans' eventually successful fight against the Latins, under whose name Aeneas and his Trojan followers are destined to be absorbed. The wanderings of Aeneas from Troy to Italy are detailed in the first six of the poem's twelve books. Greco-Roman myth and legend were already familiar with the hero Aeneas because he appeared in the Iliad. The Aeneid was transformed by Virgil from the disjointed tales of Aeneas' wanderings, his hazy connection to the founding of Rome, and his description as a personage of no fixed characteristics other than scrupulous pietas into a compelling founding myth or national epic that connected Rome to the Troyan legends, explained the Punic Wars, exalted traditional Roman virtues, and validated the Julio-Claudian dynasty. One of the best pieces of Latin literature and largely recognized as Virgil's masterpiece is The Aeneid.

This biography of John Jervis, who became Admiral Lord Vincent, makes compelling reading. It throws an oblique light on Nelsons…

personality. St Vincent, who was born twenty-three years before Nelson, and survived for eighteen years after Trafalgar, fundamentally influenced the younger mans career despite the two men being diametrically different characters. Yet without him, Nelsons genius might have been submerged by professional jealousy or emotional fragility.

It was St Vincents strategy and preparation which positioned Nelson to win his three famous victories, but St Vincent himself made vital contributions not only to the defeat of Napoleon but to the well-being of the Royal Navy. Before he became First Lord of the Admiralty, the Navy had been severely weakened by corruption in the dockyards, nepotism in appointments and the appalling conditions under which the seamen lived and worked.

St Vincent deserves the profound gratitude of the Nation; not only for enabling Nelson to exercise his tactical brilliance, but also for the role he played in preventing Napoleon from invading the British Isles.

A thrilling account of the rescue of RAF crewmen after their aircraft crashes in Afghanistan in 1919. This is the…

story of an unknown incident during the little-known Third Afghan War. An aircraft from the No. 20 Squadron RAF was lost while investigating gathering tribesman. The crew were rescued, and most of the aircraft was recovered by the Kurram Militia and the 22nd Battery Motor Machine Gun Service. It was an all-arms action—the lives of two airmen were saved at the cost of an Indian Militiaman and an unknown number of Afghan tribesmen. It also illustrates the experience of a virtually unknown group of soldiers, the 22nd Battery of the Motor Machine Gun Service. They had volunteered to serve as Motor Machine Gunners in France, had been through an intense, competitive, and sometimes costly selection process, and had now suddenly found themselves dispatched half way round the globe to the heat, dust, snows and monsoons of India and the North-West Frontier. This book examines the conflict’s background, the Kurram Militia, the history of the squadron and the lives of the key players. While this was not the only action the 22nd Battery of the Motor Machine Gun Service fought during the Third Afghan War, this one was recorded in the account of A/Sjt Ernest “Bill” Macro, who was in charge of the section of 22nd Battery dispatched to Badama Post in late July 1919. This is his story, and the stories of the other men for whom the climax of their experience in the Third Afghan War came during the action at Badama Post

The true tale behind the tragic poem is revealed. On September 5, 1755, the British declared that all Acadians were…

to be expelled from their homeland of Nova Scotia. The Acadians were forcibly removed from their homes and deported. They wandered for decades, searching for their families and hoping to find a place to call home; many were never reunited with love ones and died as exiles, living as outcasts in unfamiliar lands. George P. Bible uses Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s original poem Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie and the poignant account of Emmeline Labiche, the real-life orphan who inspired the story, as a basis for his treatise. His research explores the facts underlying each section of the famous poem, revealing the real families, many of whom settled at last in the fertile lands of Louisiana. With correspondence detailing oral histories, along with sketches of family heirlooms, Bible provides a glimpse of a resilient people and a tragic history.

An account of the heroic D-Day actions of the US Army’s first airborne division in the series that brings World…

War II battles to life.

Since its formation on August 15, 1942, the 82nd Airborne, commanded by Major General Matthew B. Ridgway, trained exhaustively for their new role, which involved parachuting from C-47s and insertion by Waco CG-4A gliders. After participating in the invasion of Sicily and performing night parachute drops onto the Salerno beachhead in September 1943, the bulk of the division left for the United Kingdom and training for D-Day.

Reorganized with two new parachute infantry regiments, the 507th and the 508th, joining the 505th, the division dropped onto the Cotentin peninsula between Ste-Mère-Église and Carentan on the night of June 5–6, in a mission codenamed Boston. Their glider-borne component, the 325th GIR, arrived the next day. Widely dispersed on landing, the division overcame its problems and strong German defenses to take the important town of Ste-Mère-Église. Further intense action along the Merderet River ensured that the Utah beachhead wasn’t compromised, and subsequently, the division fought on losing 5,245 troopers killed, wounded, or missing. When withdrawn after 33 days of action, the division could be satisfied it had performed heroically and helped establish the Allied forces’ foothold in France.

The Past & Present Series reconstructs historical battles by using photography, juxtaposing modern views with those of the past together with concise explanatory text. It shows how much infrastructure has remained and how much such as outfits, uniforms, and ephemera has changed, providing a coherent link between now and then.

A common sense guide to becoming a better leader and achieving a healthy work/life balance in order to live your…

best life.

The number one complaint from many companies is “Our leaders don’t know how to lead!” Why would they? Most people are promoted because they did one thing really well or outlasted their “addicted to average” co-workers/teammates, not because they knew how to lead. Andre Young’s favorite example is “You sold a million dollars worth of product . . . You are now the Sales Manager.” They haven’t proved they can manage or lead anyone; they’ve only proven they can sell a million dollars worth of product . . . their way.

Work/Life Harmony is more important now than it’s ever been. The notion of leaving home at the door before entering work and leaving work at the door when entering home is obsolete. The fact that cell phones are always accessible means significant others, relationships, and outside life now enter work with every employee . . . ALL DAY. So, when things are bad intimately, parentally, and socially, it shows up at work with employees trying to do their job in between responding to ten pages of “Hate Texts.” In contrast, when that same employee returns home, their phone may continue to ring with work emails, work texts, etc. If they respond, they’ve effectively communicated it’s okay to invade their time. If they don’t, it doesn’t erase the anxiety of not responding or knowing a pile of work is building up. There may not be a true balance between both realms, but 7 Ways to Lead helps leaders find and create harmony between the two.

“A leadership book written by a real leader! . . . eminently useful for those ‘in command’ of organizations of…

any kind. A stimulating five-star work” (Ralph Peters, New York Times–bestselling author).

This book tells the dramatic story of seven defining leadership moments from the American Revolution, as well as providing case studies that can improve your leadership at home, business, in your community, in the military, or in government.

Leadership is not about position, it is about influence. You can be a leader no matter what your rank or position. It is not about power, it is about selflessness. You cannot be a good leader unless you can also be a good follower. Good leaders don’t shine, they reflect. Lessons like these are the core of this book. The stories in this book are about leaders who were challenged at all corners, adapted, improvised and overcame. The tales of leaders like Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry, Henry Knox, Benjamin Franklin, and George Washington, to name a few, are stories you will want to know and tell. These leaders knew how to push teams to succeed under the toughest conditions. These stories will come alive on the pages of this book to fuel your leadership fire and make you a better leader in any endeavor. Learn how they secured our liberty so you can transform today into a better tomorrow.
