This book explores how and if the mandate for children to worship in schools can be justified within the context…
of declining church attendance and increasing nonreligious identification in British society. Shillitoe asks what place compulsory worship has in an increasingly diverse and plural society, and what the answer means for the relationship between religion, the secular, and education more broadly. Through in-depth ethnographic fieldwork from across three schools in southwest England, the book reveals how examining the significance of children’s experiences expands our understanding of both collective worship in schooling and religion in social life more broadly and demonstrates that adult-centric anxieties and assumptions in this area do not always reflect the experiences of children.By Donald Miller, Don Miller. 2003
"I never liked jazz music because jazz music doesn't resolve. I used to not like God because God didn't resolve.…
But that was before any of this happened." ?Donald MillerIn Donald Miller's early years, he was vaguely familiar with a distant God. But when he came to know Jesus Christ, he pursued the Christian life with great zeal. Within a few years he had a successful ministry that ultimately left him feeling empty, burned out, and, once again, far away from God. In this intimate, soul-searching account, Miller describes his remarkable journey back to a culturally relevant, infinitely loving God.For anyone wondering if the Christian faith is still relevant in a postmodern culture. For anyone thirsting for a genuine encounter with a God who is real. For anyone yearning for a renewed sense of passion iná life.Blue Like Jazz is a fresh and original perspective on life, love, and redemption.By Beth McCord. 2019

A devout Christian herself,…
Ana has blended what has brought her to the top of her game, as an executive at a Fortune 500 company, with the faith–based philosophy she believes is the foundation for her finding meaning, and thus success, in all aspects of her professional life. The principles Ana discusses in this book–faith, integrity, humility, prayer, forgiveness, stewardship, and legacy–are concepts which have carried her well into a very distinguished career. They are principles that underlie a spirit–led career she believes is possible for anyone wanting to give purpose to the single most time–consuming aspect of all our lives: work.Keeping The Faith looks at some of the common struggles all people face at various stages of their working lives–helping readers to remain true to what they deeply believe. From her own experiences, Ana shows us that when difficulties and doubts are confronted using her unique take on spiritual pragmatism, each difficulty can extend itself into success, growth, and a clearer understanding of one's self, and one's own sense of professional purpose.Ana believes that the answers or the outcomes in each case will become clearer, more deeply satisfying, more "right," when one is able to shift one's line of sight, and consider what it means to blend a working life together with devoutly spiritual one.The Book of the Shepherd by Joann Davis, author of The Best Things in Life Aren’t Things, tells the story…
of three travelers on an uncertain journey toward “the new way.” Set in a mythical time in an unnamed land, The Book of the Shepherd follows the shepherd, a small boy, and a former slave as they discover that sometimes the greatest treasures are inside us all along. In the words of Paulo Coelho, this book is an “inspiring and moving fable.”By D. Cooper. 1996
Known as Mitra to the Indians, Mithra and Zarathustra (Zoroaster in Greek) to the Iranians, and Mithras to the Romans,…
this is the oldest of all living deities. Mithras was recognized as the greatest rival of Christianity, a greater threat even than the religion of Isis. If Rome had not become Christian, it would have become Mithrasian. Mithraisians had a sacrament that included wine as a symbol of sacrificial blood. Bread in wafers, or small loaves marked with a cross, was used to symbolize flesh. The priestly symbols were a staff, a ring, a hat, and a hooked sword/ members were called brothers, and priests were called "Father." Mithras was born on December 25th. He offered salvation based on faith, compassion, knowledge, and valor. He appealed to the poor, the slave and the freeman, as well as to the Roman aristocracy, the militia, and even to some emperors. The Christians sacked his temples, burned his books, and attacked his followers--they desecrated his temples, and built their own churches on the same foundations as the old Mithraic temples. Cooper examines Mithras and his religion in the most complete study ever done. He explores the various forms of this godworshiped from Lisbon to modrn Bangladesh, from the Scottish border to the Russian Steppesand investigates the worship. This is an exciting journey into living mythology, the history of a living god, and will fascinate modern Western readers who want to know more about the spiritual pathwhether they want to better understand contemporary Christianity, the basis of many contemporary ideaologies, mythology, or the Western Mystery Tradition.By Dave Goetz. 2006
A great number of seekers find themselves in the seemingly unreal world of the suburbs. They read spirituality books but…
find themselves in carpools and coaching soccer, not in monasteries. Dave Goetz, a former pastor, shows that the suburbs are a real world, but a spiritually corrosive one. The land of SUVs and soccer leagues can truly be toxic to the soul. Suburbanites need to understand how the environment affects them and what spiritual disciplines are needed for their faith to survive and thrive. Goetz identifies eight toxins in the suburban life, such as hyper–competition and the "transactional" friendship, and suggests eight corresponding disciplines to keep the spiritual life authentic. Goetz weaves sociology studies, his own experiences, current events, wisdom of the spiritual masters, and a little humor to equip spiritual suburbanites for how to relate to God amidst Starbucks, strip–malls, and perfect lawns.By Beth McCord. 2019

attempted to make sense of the universe—to discover the connection between mind and matter. Some of today’s scientists, in particular quantum physicists, are doing the same. In this contribution to the study of consciousness, physicist Fred Alan Wolf reveals what he calls the “new alchemy” —a melding of the ideas of the old alchemists and the new scientists to reach a fuller understanding of mind and matter. An elegant book with short, stand-alone chapters, each framed by an alchemical symbol and its definition, Mind into Matter is thought provoking for scientists and lay people alike.Praise for Mind into Matter“I consider Fred Alan Wolf one of the most important pioneers in the field of consciousness. Explore the relationship between psychology and spirituality from a feminist perspective! From the editor: “There are forces in the universe about…
which we know nothing and can learn nothing through empiricism and material means. Such forces can be invoked in the process of therapy to assist in healing, to deepen experience, and to free us from the confining limits of the human mind. This is a book about the spiritual within each of us and about spirituality as it extends beyond any of us to embrace all of us. It deals with inspiration and passion, sorrow and loss, meaning and depth. It focuses upon the relationship between matters of spirit and of psychology, leading to new treatments within the parameters of psychotherapy that extend its vision far beyond the treatment of affliction.”The Invisible Alliance: Psyche and Spirit in Feminist Therapy provides you with a comprehensive review of multiculturalism and its relationship with feminism and spirituality and explores: ways to incorporate Jewish principles and beliefs into feminist therapy the application of religious sources of passion and perspective to parenting and working with children ways to combine Christian and Wiccan philosophies in therapy a provocative approach for integrating Christian biblical teachings into feminist therapy for survivors of sexual abuse ways that Buddhist ideas can enrich the understanding of the self and identity a case study of ancient healing traditions used by Latinas criteria for therapists to use in deciding whether to work with clients dealing with spiritual/religious issues or refer them to someone more appropriate a way to use the power of ritual to heal and give more meaning to important life transitionsBy John Haught. 2017

Evelyn Tucker, coauthor of Journey of the Universe Over the past two centuries scientific advances have made it clear that the universe is a story still unfolding. In this thought-provoking book, John F. Haught considers the deeper implications of this discovery. He contends that many others who have written books on life and the universe—including Stephen Hawking, Stephen Jay Gould, and Richard Dawkins—have overlooked a crucial aspect of cosmic history: the drama of life&’s awakening to interiority and religious awareness. Science may illuminate the outside story of the universe, but a full telling of the cosmic story cannot ignore the inside development that interiority represents. Haught addresses two primary questions: what does the arrival of religion tell us about the universe, and what does our understanding of the cosmos as an unfinished drama tell us about religion? The history of religion may be ambiguous and sometimes even barbarous, he asserts, but its role in the story of cosmic emergence and awakening must be taken into account. &“A well written book overall, and one that should prompt a more inspiring view of where we are in the Big Picture, The New Cosmic Story is highly recommended.&”—Forbes.com &“Haught delivers a singular contribution with his fresh, panoptic perspective on our cosmic story.&”—Charles G. Conway, Reading Religion &“This book, John F. Haught&’s summa, will become a permanent contribution to the religion and science literature.&”—Holmes Rolston, III, Templeton Prize winnerBy Thomas Berry. 2009

environmental thinker (Library Journal). A leading scholar, cultural historian, and Catholic priest who spent more than fifty years writing about our engagement with the Earth, Thomas Berry possessed prophetic insight into the rampant destruction of ecosystems and the extinction of species. In this book he makes a persuasive case for an interreligious dialogue that can better confront the environmental problems of the twenty-first century. These erudite and keenly sympathetic essays represent Berry&’s best work, covering such issues as human beings&’ modern alienation from nature and the possibilities of future, regenerative forms of religious experience. Asking that we create a new story of the universe and the emergence of the Earth within it, Berry resituates the human spirit within a sacred totality. &“This book addresses how the history and diversity of world religions offer ways to engage with Earth; how it is necessary to connect with a spirituality that is Earth derived; how science can be in conversation with the religious sensibilities of wonder and awe; and how our relationship to the natural world is crucial to our spirituality. In the earliest essays, Berry sounds most optimistic and urges readers to reconcile modern impulses and technology with religious traditions.&”—Publishers Weekly &“Thomas Berry demonstrates in these papers the qualities he calls for: humanist vision and imagination.&”—ResurgenceBy Mike Yaconelli. 2002

for the Solitary Practitioner is a groundbreaking look at devotional work in religions from Theodism to Asatru to Norse Paganism, all of which comprise the umbrella of the Northern Tradition. Although interest in devotional and experiential work within these traditions has been growing rapidly in the past few years, this is the first book to show the diverse scope of such practices as a living, modern-day religion. It features an in-depth exploration of altar work, prayer, prayer beads, ritual work, sacred images, and lore, and a thorough examination of common cosmology that forms the foundation of belief for Northern Tradition communities and related Heathen practices.Northern Tradition for the Solitary Practitioner is not denomination-specific: rather, it seeks to provide an entry into interior practice for anyone involved in a branch of this broad family of traditions of the ancient Norse, Germanic, and Saxon peoples, using material suitable for the solitary, independent practitioner. Those outside of the Northern Tradition who wish to deepen their own devotional practice will find this book helpful in their own work, as well.
