This book explores the single-session work done by Irving Yalom and considers the implications of this work for the current…
theory and practice of single-session therapy (SST).Due to failing memory and decreasing stamina as he aged, Yalom eventually decided that if he was to continue to offer help to patients, he could only do so by offering them single-session consultations. While it was perhaps reluctant single-session work, it coincided with the continued rise of SST starting with the publication of Moshe Talmon's book in 1990. This book examines Yalom’s work against the growing literature on single-session therapy, covering both what single-session therapists can learn from Yalom’s consultations as well as what they would not want to implement. Dryden closely examines Yalom’s work in these sessions through a single-session mindset and tracks how it impacts the development of SST.This book will be of interest to any single-session practitioners as well as those scholars and followers of Yalom.
Critical Qualitative Research and Social Justice is an encyclopedia-esque book that is a must have for any researcher interested in…
critical and social justice qualitative research. It helps readers understand and navigate the labyrinthine of critical and social justice concepts available for qualitative research studies. The book focuses on critical, decolonial, transformative, critical interpretivist, participatory, or related approaches that disrupt dominant paradigms, unapologetically name issues of power, identify and overturn oppressive policies, and engage with communities in meaningful ways. There are 28 chapters that take up a different critical and/or social justice research concept and define it for readers. The chapters are not mutually exclusive but overlap and connect with each other. As such, readers can draw from different chapters as they create their own critical and/or social justice research designs. This book will be of interest to researchers (faculty, institutional researchers, graduate students, nonprofit research or assessment people, etc.) across fields and disciplines who are interested in crafting quality research designs and making a concerted difference with their research.

The Social Life of Objects in Early Development: New Perspectives on the Pragmatics of the Object (Social Interaction in Learning and Development)
By Cintia Rodríguez, Pedro Palacios, Iván Moreno-Llanos, Irene Guevara. 2025
This book fills a gap in early developmental psychology by providing a critical reconsideration of the status of artifact objects…
as protagonists of children's actions and communication. The main thesis explored in the book is that objects are part of the material culture; they have public functions and social meanings that are transmitted by the members of the community. Their meanings are not "naturally" given, and children are not born knowing what to do with objects. All chapters analyze and illustrate communication with parents, or with teachers and peers in the early-years school. The book also explores the status of action and uses of materiality in communicative situations with children on the autism spectrum. The book shows objects coming alive in action and in communication, shaping the social foundations and early development of the human psyche. The book is intended for use by scholars and researchers in developmental psychology, teachers in early childhood education (mainly 0-3 years), undergraduate and postgraduate students in the fields of psychology and education, and sociocultural psychologists interested in early development.

Within its framework of scientific literacy, the text charts four key themes to guide learners: a focus on aging as development; a global perspective on contexts; a vibrant, integrated approach to diverse coverage; and psychological science that translates into real-life experiences. A final chapter focuses on ways to improve the experience of aging for all adults.
Designing for Human Intelligence in an Artificial Intelligence World: Understanding Human Cognition to Design for Humans
By Rebecca Baker, Jerome L. Rekart. 2025
How we think and react has a direct impact on experience design, but often designers don't understand the "whys" behind…
their best practices, leaving them at risk for misusing or underutilizing those designs. Similarly, psychologists/neuroscientists don't understand the design decisions that their science is informing and how they might be leveraged further. This book explores how neuroscience and cognitive psychology inform experience design, within the modern context of research and technological advances. With a conversational and playful tone, this book begins by grounding you in research and AI. That foundation then allows you to expand your repertoire through chapters on design-relevant cognitive phenomena such as memory, learning, and perception. By delving into how our brains handle these processes and how our designs can effectively (or ineffectively) leverage them, the book follows a journey that weaves academic learning with practical, real-world applications and examples. With the widespread availability of generative AI tools, understanding the intersection of human cognition and design and how that knowledge can be used to build a bridge between the brain and the software has become even more critical. By understanding the brain and human behavior more completely, designers will be able to effectively use AI as an accelerator for tactical projects and provide the context that is unique to the human ability to understand the "why.&”

Several decades of psychometric research have led to the development of sophisticated models for multidimensional test data, and in recent…
years, multidimensional item response theory (MIRT) has become a burgeoning topic in psychological and educational measurement. Considered a cutting-edge statistical technique, the methodology underlying MIRT can be complex, and therefore doesn’t receive much attention in introductory IRT courses. However author Wes Bonifay shows how MIRT can be understood and applied by anyone with a firm grounding in unidimensional IRT modeling. His volume includes practical examples and illustrations, along with numerous figures and diagrams. Multidimensional Item Response Theory includes snippets of R code interspersed throughout the text (with the complete R code included on an accompanying website) to guide readers in exploring MIRT models, estimating the model parameters, generating plots, and implementing the various procedures and applications discussed throughout the book.
