Growing older can be a time of great joy and satisfaction for men as they look back on their accomplishments…
and gain more free time, but it can also be a challenging and distressing experience, especially for those men raised with the very traditional notions of what it means to be a "real man." This book will help practitioners working with older and aging men understand the eras in which these men were raised, how they view the world, the gender role conflicts they experience, and the physical, mental, and emotional challenges and problems they face during the later stages of their lives. The authors discuss theories of masculinity and aging and therapeutic considerations for working with this special population. Making use of many detailed case studies, they explore the psychological issues that are commonly faced by older men, such as depression, anxiety, cognitive impairment, and substance use and abuse, as well as effective screening and assessment techniques, and treatment approaches. They then conclude with a look at the future directions of psychotherapy with older men.By Sophie Mas, Caroline De Maigret. 2019
From the bestselling authors of How to be Parisian, what smart, savvy, fabulous French women think, feel and advise as…
they hit forty on life, love, and everything else Older, but Better, but Older has the playful wit, self deprecation and worldly advice we have come to expect from these bestselling authors, but now that advice is focused on the French woman's mindset as she hurtles towards forty. Caroline de Maigret and Sophie Mas are back to amuse you with how they find they are modifying their favorite bad-girl behavior as they address beauty, love, seduction as well as lifestyle, family, work, and living alone. They are still bohemian iconoclasts saying what you don't expect to hear. They will tell you things aren't what they used to bewhen a thirty-year-old guy arrives at a party and does not even glance at you; when you wake up feeling great and everyone tells you how tired you look; you know you're an adult when you're excited just to go home. Neuroses vs. confidence, resistance vs. acceptance, passion vs. serenity, de Maigret and Mas through spirited short stories capture the different stages of ageingas nostalgic but modern Parisian women. From the privately absurd to the strangely universal, this book captures moments of everyday life that will make the reader nod, cringe, and laugh out loud.By Curri Valenzuela. 2012
By Colby Evans, Whitney High. 2012

This book provides practical evidence-based strategies that will help clinicians across a broad range of disciplines to address and discuss…
the main issues an aging person is likely to face and overcome if they are to maintain a sense of well-being as they age. Based on an extensive body of research, the relevant up-to-date knowledge for each topic is concisely presented, followed by practical, concrete, evidence-based suggestions as to how a healthcare provider might acknowledge and create a partnership with their clients to help the person increase their sense of well-being. Each chapter contains a list of key terms, a summary, and case examples that illustrate in realistic and humanistic ways how a person might present the concern being addressed and intervene. The specific challenges associated with aging that are addressed include: anxiety attached to an increasing awareness of mortality; retirement; the increasing number of losses of significant others; regrets; memory loss; the arrival of old-old age and feelings of loneliness, mattering insufficiently, and a loss of purpose; and finally, dealing with imminent death. This book is suitable for all health professionals who provide clinical services or advice to older adults including physicians (i.e. particularly in the specialties of internal medicine, family medicine, geriatrics, and geriatric psychiatry), nurses, social workers, psychologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and audiologists.By Regula Robnett, Walter Chop. 2015
Gerontology for the Health Care Professional, Third Edition is a comprehensive, practical text covering the evolving field of gerontology, written…
for health care students and professionals. Written by experts across many health professions, Gerontology for the Health Care Professional, Third Edition presents an up-to-date and realistic view on the aging process. With topics presented in an introductory fashion, this book covers all the important aspects of aging and instills an appreciation for the multidimensional aspects of aging for those who are working with and caring for elderly patients or clients. Each chapter includes objectives, chapter outlines, cast studies, multiple-choice review questions, and learning activities. The Third Edition begins with chapters on different aspects of the aging process. Later chapters explore various issues that are of primary importance to the older population. This comprehensive, accessible text concludes with the future concerns of an aging society. There is also an epilogue encouraging all health care professionals to embrace patient or client advocacy, especially for older adults. This book aims to clarify the potential association between frailty and cardiovascular disease in older people. Covering the biological as…
well as the clinical point of view, it allows researchers and clinicians to discover the significance of this topic. The contributions cover the most important aspects in the potential relationship between frailty and cardiovascular disease. In particular, authoritative authors in this field have clarified the definition and the epidemiology of frailty and cardiovascular disease in older people. A large part of the volume is dedicated to the biological mechanisms of frailty and cardiovascular disease, trying to find those in common between these two conditions. Since this book is dedicated to both researchers and clinicians, we have proposed some chapters to the importance of comprehensive geriatric assessment in the evaluation and treatment of cardiovascular diseases and frailty. In this regard, the importance of geriatric evaluation in cardiac surgery for older people is well covered. Finally, the importance of cardiac rehabilitation and physical exercise is summarized, being, actually, the most important treatments for both frailty and cardiovascular disease. Written by many well-known and widely published experts in their respective fields, this book will appeal to a wide readership such as researchers in the field and clinicians, especially suited in geriatric medicine and cardiology who, every day, face frail older patients.By Maciej Banach, Kannayiram Alagiakrishnan. 2020
As the Baby Boomers age, concerns over healthcare systems abilities to accommodate geriatric patients grow increasingly challenging. The increased life…
expectancy of the population since the early 1900s had been built on the improvement of living conditions, diet, public health and advancement in medical care. With this we have seen a steady decline in the age-specific prevalence of vascular and heart diseases, stroke and even dementia. In addition, societies worldwide struggle to develop a large enough workforce to treat aging patients, which forces geriatric patients to rely on physicians in a wide array of specialties that are often not trained for their demographic. These trends have created a tremendous need for trustworthy resources, yet with regard to hypotensive syndromes, nothing of this nature exists.Hypotensive syndromes represent a heterogenous group of disease states. Hypotensive syndromes are characterized by low blood pressure following postural changes, meals and neck turning. These are common conditions seen in the elderly and could be due to blood pressure dysregulation. These syndromes frequently cause dizziness, syncope and falls in the elderly as well as a resultant decrease in function, and they are frequently mistaken for other conditions. This is especially true among physicians who are not trained to consider the unique needs of an aging patient. The proposed book is designed to present a comprehensive approach to the management of hypotensive syndromes in the elderly. Currently there are no guidelines or good resource to guide about these conditions. This book will also discuss the challenges of diagnosis and management of these conditions. The text introduces the concepts to set a clear foundation before covering the syndromes as they present in other comorbidities, including diabetes, heart failure, and a wide array of serious conditions that are common in older patients. As the Baby Boomers continue to age, this text will prove a vital resource for a wide array of specialties that will be increasingly critical to meeting their needs.By Eric Bui, Meredith E. Charney, Amanda W. Baker. 2020

By Carol A. This book explores the meaning of quality of life in care for older persons and introduces the reader to their…
main concerns when receiving care. Based on qualitative research, it pays particular attention to the needs and requirements of older people, considering their individual family situations, social circumstances, values and lifestyles. Person-centred care is a way of providing nursing care that puts older people and their families at the core of all decisions, seeing each person as an individual, and working together to develop appropriate solutions. Following an introduction to the concept of quality of life in old age, the book reviews essential findings from worldwide research into the experiences of older people with regard to nursing care and the impact of these experiences on their quality of life. It investigates health promotion, care provided in nursing homes and assisted living facilities, and palliative care. Each chapter includes a brief introduction to the respective field of nursing care and the problems it has to deal with, concluding with a discussion of their implications for nursing practice in the respective field of care. In closing, the evidence from qualitative research is discussed in relation to current gerontological theories.By Antonio M. Esquinas, Nicola Vargas. 2020
