This accessible resource coordinates what we know about the intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment (ITCM), with a specific focus on…
prevention in context. Cutting through facile cause-and-effect constructs, the authors review and critique the recent literature on the complicated nature of the phenomenon and weigh different approaches to its conceptualization. The book identifies child and parental risk factors linked to ITCM as well as protective factors involved in its reduction, while examining complex relationships between family, parenting, and social contexts that can provide keys to understanding and healing traumatized families. This close attention to crucial yet often overlooked details will aid professionals in creating the next wave of salient research projects and effective interventions, and enhance current efforts to break longstanding patterns of abuse and neglect. Among the topics covered: * Theoretical frameworks conceptualizing intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment. * Empirical studies on intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment. * Risk factors associated with ITCM. * Protective factors associated with breaking the cycle of maltreatment. * Methodological challenges in studying ITCM. * Recommendations for evaluation of intervention and prevention strategies. Geared toward novices and veterans alike, Intergenerational Transmission of Child Maltreatment is a solution-focused reference of singular importance to practitioners and research professionals involved in improving children's well-being.By Elizabeth L. Jeglic, Cynthia Calkins. 2016
The purpose of this edited volume is to examine the disconnect in the sexual violence prevention field between legislation, research…
and practice. The work is focused primarily on United States policies and initiatives, with key case studies internationally. Contributions show that current policies are mainly based on repeat offenders: residence restrictions, registration and notification statutes, and post-sentence initiatives. While these initiatives address public fears, they are not evidence-based and do not necessarily reduce offending. Research shows that post-sentence policies may destabilize offenders and limit their ability to reintegrate with society at a critical period, therefore increasing the chances of recidivism. Furthermore, the majority of sex crimes (95%) are committed by first time offenders. This innovative book is divided into two parts juxtaposing what is currently being done legislatively with what the research evidence suggests would be best practice.By Kathryn Daley. 2016
This book provides a sociological examination of young people's pathways into, and out of, substance abuse. Drawing from in-depth, life-history…
interviews with over sixty young people who have experienced problematic drug use, the author uses participants' narratives to throw light on the relationship between trauma and issues such as homelessness, crime and self-injury. Contesting the view that substance abuse is either a medical issue or individual failing, the book examines the wide variety of factors which lead to youth substance abuse such as extreme poverty and other structural factors. Whilst it does not overlook individual agency, the rich descriptions from young people's oral histories show us that the contexts in which agency was exercised, was often considerably constrained by significant structural forces. The sociological concept of 'situated choice', which is used to explain and understand how people make choices within their individual context, is used throughout the book as we witness young people wrestling to escape intergenerational disadvantage. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of Social Work, Social Policy, Youth Studies, Sociology and Health Studies.By Richard Isralowitz, Patricia A. Findley. 2016
This ambitious resource describes innovative intervention programs for treating substance abuse and other mental health problems in the Middle East…
in the context of larger issues in the region. Deftly combining clinical acumen with in-depth knowledge of sociopolitical currents, contributors present data and analysis on similarities and differences within the region, addiction issues in special populations (youth, mothers, immigrants), and the efficacy of local and international initiatives. New trends in evidence-based responses, including mental health services in war and disaster, are related to the larger goals of promoting peace. To that end, the editors go beyond the concept of shared problems to discuss strategies toward shared solutions, most notably psychological first aid as a healing approach to mediation. Among the topics covered: · Drug abuse in the Middle East: promoting mutual interests through resistance and resilience. · Toward uniform data collection and monitoring of Israeli and Palestinian adolescent drug use. · Substance abusing mothers: toward an understanding of parenting and risk behavior. · Immigration, acculturation, and drug use. · Psychological first aid: a tool for mitigating conflict in the Middle East. · Collaborative approaches to addressing mental health and addiction. For health psychologists, psychiatrists, clinical social workers, and addiction counselors, Mental Health and Addiction Care in the Middle East demonstrates the deep potential for mental health and social issues to be addressed to benefit all communities involved.By Jolene M. Sanders. 2014

treatment works. This book uses an innovative translational approach to weave together basic biological mechanisms with human behaviour in order to provide a critical insight into why people do (and do not) change in the context of treatment. With sections focusing on both adults and adolescents, this book bridges the gap between experimental scientists and clinical practitioners to guide how to provide treatment outcomes for those most at need.By Holly Jarman. 2015
Public health policies are increasingly the subject of global trade and investment disputes. What are the consequences of this trend…
for existing and future policies designed to protect the public interest? This book uses the concept of political conflict to examine the effects of globalization on tobacco control policies. Arguing that the scope of a political conflict - which voices can be heard in a particular debate, and which individuals or groups are excluded - has a significant effect on support for public health policies, the book examines how the global trading system has narrowed the scope of conflicts over tobacco control. Analyzing challenges to policies enacted by Australia, Canada, the United States, the European Union and Uruguay, this book offers a critical look at the exclusionary global trading system and outlines what can be done to fix it.By Adele D. Jones, Ena Trotman Jemmott, Priya E. Maharaj, Hazel Da Breo. 2014

Domestic Violence Laws in the United States and India is a comparative study of the domestic violence laws in India…
and the United States, seeking to illuminate the critical issues of intimate partner violence through the lenses of these two societies. Sims, Goel, and Sodhi believe society at large and systems of justice define and address domestic violence, and that both play significant roles in the form and prevalence of domestic violence . They juxtapose the ancient and traditional Indian laws with those of the United States as India seeks to take its place as a major, industrialized nation with progressive laws to protect the mostly female victims of domestic violence. Sims, Goel, and Sodhi explore the different ways domestic violence manifests itself, including dowry deaths in India, the "rule of thumb" law in the United States, and the multiple varieties of physical and mental violence in both societies.By John L. Fitzgerald. 2015
Framing Drug Use examines the forces that shape the way we use drugs. The book analyses space, streetscapes, languages, signs,…
photographs, stories, routines, social organisations and the frameworks of everyday life, which contribute to drug-related harm. This variously implicates the forces of economics, emotion, physical pleasure and culture. John Fitzgerald importantly proposes a new set of tools and a new framework for analyzing drug problems. The new framework suggests that care, compassion and responsibility might come to replace blame and punishment as central terms that define how we approach drug control.By Sharon Hayes, Samantha Jeffries. 2015

Church-State relations have undergone a dramatic political sea change since the landmark clerical sexual abuse scandals of 2001. Where instances…
of child molestation by men of the cloth were once routinely denied by the Catholic Church, United States civil authorities have taken bold steps to hold clerics accountable for abuse under civil law. From secret payoffs, cover-ups, and clerical reassignments; to civil investigations demanding transparency and justice, Formicola explores key abuse cases and how state authorities moved to protect American children without violating the First Amendment. Clerical Sexual Abuse provides a detailed examination of how rampant sexual crimes cost the Catholic Church both its political clout and its public image in a wave of outrage-fueled reform.By Gernot Klantschnig, Neil Carrier, Charles Ambler. 2014
