The future of banking (Flash Ensayo #Volumen)
By Miguel A Fern ndez Ord ez. 2018
A reflection on the fragile banking sector nowadays and the possibility of progressing towards a system of public and safe…
money, issued by the Central Bank. Miguel A. Fernández Ordóñez introduces his text with a quote from Mervyn King, former governor of the Bank of England: «Among all ways of organizing the banking system, the one that we have today is the worst.» Ordóñez shares his opinion and he proposes a radical change within the banking system: a Central Bank which would be the only one authorized to create money. His reform would allow families and companies to deposit their money in the Central Bank, something that exclusively private banks do today. Thus, only real money would be employed, far away from the «fictive money» or «promise to give back money» that we are used to nowadays. Fernández Ordóñez claims that by doing so, financial and economic crises could be avoided, such as the one which Spain suffered from2008 onwards. Banks would not need to be rescued with huge amounts of public money. Through this new model that the author proposes, everything would be reformulated: the Central Bank would be an autonomous system, far from the control of political powers, and private banks would transform into very different companies. The Government would not be in need of investing public money to save banks, and the society would head towards a more equal and safe economic system. This book examines the energy footprints of various industrial sectors, including the bio- and hydrogen energy systems, and explores the…

By Daiqing Zhao, Wenjun Wang, Zhigang Luo. 2019
This book systematically introduces readers to the framework of China’s ETS pilots, exploring their design and operating process, the current…
state of the carbon market, and various barriers encountered. To do so, it deconstructs the Guangdong ETS, which is the largest and most representative of China’s seven ETS pilots. The book subsequently describes and evaluates all seven pilots in terms of their efficiency, macro and micro effects, the method involved in the DEA model, the CGE model, and cost-benefit analysis. In turn, in the assessment section it demonstrates how some ETS pilots have failed to control carbon emissions due to inordinately high emissions quotas issued by the local government etc. Further, it argues that ETS should focus on those industries with large emissions and high mitigating potential for the time being, and then gradually expand the scale of its coverage. As China’s national ETS is slated for launch on the basis of the lessons learned from the ETS pilots, the book offers a timely and valuable resource for all those who want to understand and forecast the development of China’s ETS. It includes a wealth of descriptions and explanations of Chinese government policies involving carbon emissions control, making it a unique resource. The Market Economy as a Social System
By Hiroto Tsukada. 2018
This book develops John Rawls’s theory of justice by adding reality-based analyses. This is accomplished by answering the question of…
who makes rules and how, and by providing new answers to three of today’s most practical and critical issues. The question of who and how makes rules is discussed first; and group orientation instead of individualism, and a balance of negotiating power instead of a veil of ignorance are presented as new answers to this question. Based on this new understanding of rulemaking, three important practical rules are subsequently discussed: the rule of distribution of land and other natural resources, including the question of natural talent or who should bear the costs of children’s education; the rule of distribution of products; and what motives support our acts of kindness. These rules are all dealt with from a shared perspective, viewing society as a single integrated construct. Equal distribution of land, not private but public payment of education fees, strengthening employees’ bargaining power, and moving toward nobility-based kindness are put forward as central answers. By addressing critical questions on social rules and proposing answers, this book provides reliable principles to fall back on in our daily lives, and in our rapidly changing, globalized world. This book presents the theoretical framework for the evolution of the international monetary system and the internationalization of the RMB.…
Combining theoretical research and empirical study, it then provides an in-depth analysis of the relevant issues from multiple perspectives based on this framework. Written by former chief economist at the Bank of China, this book explains the “two-step strategy” from the capital account opening to the full convertibility of the RMB, it also analyzes the status and functions of the HK offshore financial market in internationalizing the RMB.Welfare rise, spatial mobility, and global information and communication channels (in particular, social media) have prompted the emergence of a…
specific booming and rapidly growing mobility industry all over the world, namely tourism. The tourist sector (including recreation and leisure activities) has turned into a complex contemporaneous socio-economic and geographic phenomenon, with a multiplicity of travel motives (e.g., entertainment, culture, relaxed life style, wellness, nature, etc.) and with a wide variety of impacts (e.g., urban- and regional-economic effects, crowding phenomena, environmental decay, etc.). Time has now come to offer a synthesis of the analytical apparatus in tourism research, with particular attention for system-wide, socio-economic and environmental dimensions of this important global industry. Tourism has in the past been a largely neglected field in regional science research. And therefore, it is laudable that João Romão has taken the decision to compose a systematically designed and well crafted monograph on the socio-economic, environmental and spatial dimensions of modern tourism. It offers a wealth of analytical insights and quantitative research tools for advanced tourism studies. It also fills an important gap in the current regional science literature. Peter Nijkamp, Tinbergen Institute, AmsterdamThis book employs different parametric and non-parametric panel data models which have been used in history of developed panel data…
efficiency measurement literature. It assesses the differences of models based on characteristics and efficiency scores measurement using a systematic sensitivity analysis of the results. On the whole twelve parametric and four nonparametric models were studied. Parametric models are classified in four groups in terms of the assumptions made on the temporal behavior of inefficiency. A common issue among all the parametric models is that inefficiency is individual producer-specific. This is consistent with the notion of measuring the efficiency of decision-making units. Non-parametric models are divided into partial and full frontier models. A main contribution of this volume is that it helps to understand differences between parametric and non-parametric models. On empirical part of the volume, technical efficiency of two agricultural strategic crops (cotton and sugar beet) in different provinces of the Iran are analyzed. Using different models, the most efficient and inefficient provinces in cotton and sugar beet production of Iran are recognized.China’s Belt and Road Initiatives: Economic Geography Reformation

By Shinji Nohara. 2018
This book offers unique insights into how Adam Smith understood globalization, and examines how he incorporated his knowledge of the…
world and globalization into his classical political economy. Although Smith lived in society that was far from globalized, he experienced the beginning of globalization. Smith considered the most developed society the commercial society: the society that results from people meeting with strangers. Among Enlightenment thinkers, Smith was one of the most important figures with respect to interaction in the world, and it is through his lens that the authors view the impact of the mixing of diverse peoples. Firstly, the book describes how Smith was influenced by information from around the world. Leaving eighteenth-century Europe, including Smith’s native Scotland, people travelled, traded, and immigrated to far-flung parts of the globe, sometimes writing books and pamphlets about their travels. Informed by these writers, Smith took into consideration the world beyond Europe and strangers with non-European backgrounds. Against that background, the book reinterprets Smith’s moral philosophy. In The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Smith developed his moral philosophy, in which he examined how people form opinions through their meetings with strangers. He researched how encounters with strangers created the sharing of social rules. As such, the book studies how Smith believed that people in dissimilar communities come to share common concepts of morality and justice. Lastly, it provides an innovative reading of Smith’s political economy. In The Wealth of Nations, Smith established the market model of economic society. However, he saw the limitations of that model since it does not consider the impact of money on economy and international trade. He also recognized the limitations of his own equilibrium theory of market, the theory that is still influential today.Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Finance in Japan (Advances In Japanese Business And Economics Ser. #17)
By Megumi Suto, Hitoshi Takehara. 2018
This book explores the linkages between the evolution of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate financing and governance in Japan…
since the late 2000s. Since the 1990s, increasing economic and financial globalization has steadily eroded the Japanese style of business based on relationships and influenced the awareness and practices of CSR that are unique to Japanese companies. In Japan’s two “lost decades” after the bubble economy, the business model and corporate financing seem to have continued a gradual financial reform toward a more market-oriented system. CSR awareness and practices of Japanese companies have been influenced by social and environmental issues that global society and communities face. Furthermore, the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011 triggered increasing attention paid to the responsibility of business toward society. In this process, major players in corporate governance and components of governance structure have continued to change. The conventional view of Japanese corporate governance and corporate finance is too narrow to understand this field in Japan. This book is based on empirical research to investigate how multifaceted CSR has aligned with business and finance and has influenced the corporate governance structure of Japanese companies. The findings and discussions in this book act are stepping stones in further research on the linkages between business and society, and provide empirical evidence on changes in Japanese corporate finance and governance. The new Japanese Firm as a Hybrid Organization (Evolutionary Economics And Social Complexity Science Ser. #16)
By Mitsuharu Miyamoto. 2018
This book examines corporate reform in Japan by focusing on corporate governance and the employment system. Contrary to a prevailing…
assertion of radical change, it is revealed that actual change is gradual, and a new type of Japanese firm is generated by reform with gradual change. Throughout the book, Japanese firms are seen to be evolving through gradual institutional change. Chapter 1 discusses how Japanese corporate governance changed incrementally and cumulatively to rebuild management and restore corporate performance. Chapter 2 focuses on reform in work organization and discusses how performance-related pay was introduced in tandem with corporate governance reform. It is shown that the practice of long-term employment has been maintained despite the prolonged depression and mounting pressure to shift to shareholder-oriented corporate governance. Chapter 3 investigates how Japanese firms are diversified into four types, based on whether performance-related pay is introduced and whether long-term employment is maintained. The author demonstrates that major Japanese firms reconstruct their organization as hybrid structures based on a combination of long-term employment and performance-related pay. Chapter 4 investigates how performance-related pay actually operates. It is analyzed by distinguishing the three main objectives to be attained by performance pay: succeeding in individual performance, contributing to overall organization performance, and meeting the challenge of new tasks. Finally, Chapter 5 investigates how employees react to changes in corporate governance. Using survey data, the book shows that Japanese employees approve of increasing shareholder value, regarding it as corporate value. They not only approve the monitoring of management by shareholders, but also demand a part in the monitoring. Employees seek to be engaged in corporate governance—a true challenge for a Japanese corporation.Recent Developments in Normative Trade Theory and Welfare Economics (New Frontiers In Regional Science: Asian Perspectives Ser. #26)

far the potential gainfulness of international trade can be extended in an increasingly globalized world. The first section focuses on the gains from trade in the presence of time-consuming consumption and external increasing returns to scale, which are often neglected in traditional trade theory. The next section considers a range of issues that have practical and policy relevance, including trade liberalization, tax reform, tourism, and international migration. The last section examines the impact of income transfers, both from domestic and international perspectives, and of economic policy making. All chapters of the book are contributed by internationally well-known researchers, including Murray Kemp, Henry Wan, Ngo Van Long and some of Murray Kemp's many colleagues and former students around the world. This book, with its up-to-date information and analysis, will be essential to academics and graduate students in the field of international economics. Trade theorists in research institutions and practicing economists in governmental departments will also find this book of great interest. on this basis that economic leverage is used to make new breakthroughs in groundwater protection and governance. Presenting a case study on the Jilin Section of the Songhua River, the book applies the overlay index method to assess the shallow groundwater pollution risk and identify high-risk areas and major pollution sources in an effort to identify the mechanism of interaction between industrial structures and groundwater pollution. Further, it proposes concrete measures for preventing and controlling groundwater pollution from an industrial economics perspective. As such, the book offers a valuable resource for all graduate students, lecturers and researchers who are interested in learning about resources and environmental economics. This book sheds new light on the relationship between economy and the environment by approaching the issue from evolutionary and…
institutional economics. Building a framework of theory and empirical analysis, it provides an in-depth perspective on how economic growth and environmental policy interact and historically evolve.Orthodox environmental economics usually understands environmental issues under the rules of market economy, while environmental sciences subordinate economy to physical constraints of the environment. Instead of these hierarchical visions, this book recognizes economy and the environment as co-evolving systems. The theoretical framework is elaborated based on the régulation and post-Keynesian theories combined. An idea of three-dimensional factors—capital, labor, and the environment—leads to conceptual and mathematical models, which will be applicable to wider analyses.Using this framework, Japanese history is analyzed as a typical example of environmental policy development. Historical transformations of environmental policies and growth regimes are explained using indices and econometric analysis. Experiences of strict regulations with positive economic impacts are also identified. These works lead to some interesting implications, which include mechanisms, the possibility, and conditions of "green growth''. This book proposes a new approach by bridging the gap between evolutionary–institutional economics and environmental economics, which should be stimulating to them both and possibly open the door for a new research avenue.New Developments in Eco-Innovation Research (Sustainability and Innovation)
